Grace

God’s Free Gift of Divine Life

What Is Grace?

Grace is the free and undeserved gift God gives us to share in His divine life.

We cannot earn grace by our own power. Grace comes from God’s love and mercy.

Through grace, God forgives us, heals us, strengthens us, and makes us holy.

“For by grace you are saved through faith, and that not of yourselves, for it is the gift of God.” — Ephesians 2:8

Why Do We Need Grace?

Without grace, we cannot be saved, become holy, overcome sin, or reach Heaven.

Human effort alone is not enough. We need God’s help.

Jesus teaches that apart from Him we can do nothing.

“Without me you can do nothing.” — John 15:5

Sanctifying Grace

Sanctifying grace is God’s life dwelling within the soul.

It makes us holy, children of God, temples of the Holy Ghost, and heirs of Heaven.

Sanctifying grace is first received in Baptism and is restored through Confession if lost by mortal sin.

Actual Grace

Actual grace is God’s help for specific moments.

God may give actual grace to strengthen us, move us to repentance, inspire prayer, help us resist temptation, or encourage us to do good.

Actual grace helps us respond to God here and now.

How Do We Receive Grace?

God can give grace in many ways, but the sacraments are the primary means Christ established for communicating grace.

We receive grace especially through:

  • Baptism.
  • The Eucharist.
  • Confession.
  • Confirmation.
  • Prayer.
  • Sacred Scripture.
  • Acts of charity.

Grace and Free Will

Grace does not destroy human freedom.

God invites, strengthens, and helps us, but He does not force us to love Him.

We are called to cooperate with grace by faith, repentance, obedience, and charity.
