Adoption as Children of God
Becoming Sons and Daughters of the Father Through Jesus Christ
What Is Adoption as Children of God?
Salvation is not only forgiveness of sins. God also brings us into His family.
Through Jesus Christ, we are made adopted sons and daughters of the Father.
This means God does not merely pardon us from a distance. He welcomes us into communion with Him and gives us a new identity in grace.
“Behold what manner of charity the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called, and should be the sons of God.” — 1 John 3:1
God Created Us for His Family
From the beginning, God created human beings for communion with Himself.
Sin wounded that relationship, but God did not abandon us.
In His mercy, He sent His Son to restore us and bring us into divine life.
The goal of salvation is not merely to avoid punishment, but to share in the life and love of God.
Adopted Through Jesus Christ
Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God.
By nature, He is the Son. By grace, we become adopted children of God through Him.
We do not become God by nature, but we are truly brought into God’s family by grace.
“But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent his Son… that we might receive the adoption of sons.” — Galatians 4:4-5
Baptism and Divine Adoption
Baptism is the ordinary beginning of our life as children of God.
Through Baptism, sin is washed away, sanctifying grace is received, and the baptized person becomes a child of God and member of Christ’s Body.
This new life is a gift, not something we earn.
“Unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Ghost, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.” — John 3:5
The Holy Spirit and Adoption
The Holy Ghost dwells within the children of God.
He teaches us to pray, strengthens us in grace, and helps us live as sons and daughters of the Father.
Through the Holy Ghost, Christians can cry out to God with filial trust.
“You have received the spirit of adoption of sons, whereby we cry: Abba, Father.” — Romans 8:15
A New Identity
Divine adoption gives Christians a new identity.
Through grace, we become:
- Children of God.
- Brothers and sisters in Christ.
- Members of the Body of Christ.
- Temples of the Holy Ghost.
- Heirs of Heaven.
This identity is greater than any worldly title, success, failure, or past sin.
Heirs of Heaven
Adoption means inheritance.
Because we are made children of God, we are called to share in the inheritance of eternal life.
Heaven is not merely a reward outside the family of God. It is the full communion with the Father, through the Son, in the Holy Ghost.
“And if sons, heirs also; heirs indeed of God, and joint heirs with Christ.” — Romans 8:17
Living as Children of God
Divine adoption changes how we live.
Children of God are called to reflect the love, holiness, mercy, and truth of the Father.
We are called to:
- Trust God as Father.
- Love God above all things.
- Love our neighbor.
- Reject sin.
- Live in holiness.
- Pray with confidence.
We do not live this way to earn God’s love, but because we have received His love.
