Who Is the Holy Spirit?

Many people have heard of the Holy Spirit but are unsure who He is.

Some think the Holy Spirit is a force, an energy, or a symbol.

Christians believe something much greater: the Holy Spirit is a Divine Person.

He is not merely God’s power. He is God.

The Holy Spirit is the Third Person of the Blessed Trinity, equal to the Father and the Son.

“The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the charity of God, and the communication of the Holy Ghost be with you all.” — 2 Corinthians 13:13

The Third Person of the Trinity

Christians believe in one God in three Divine Persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost.

The Father is God. The Son is God. The Holy Ghost is God.

Yet there are not three gods. There is one God.

The Holy Spirit possesses the same divine nature as the Father and the Son.

He is co-equal, co-eternal, and worthy of the same worship and glory.

The Holy Spirit Is God

The Holy Spirit is not a created being. He is not an angel. He is not a force.

He is God Himself.

Throughout Scripture the Holy Spirit acts with divine authority:

  • He creates.
  • He sanctifies.
  • He teaches.
  • He inspires Scripture.
  • He gives life.

Only God can do these things. Because of this, Christians have always worshiped the Holy Spirit as true God.

The Holy Spirit in Scripture

The Holy Spirit appears throughout the Bible.

In the Old Testament:

  • The Spirit hovers over the waters of creation.
  • The Spirit speaks through the prophets.
  • The Spirit empowers God’s people.

In the New Testament:

  • The Spirit descends upon Jesus at His Baptism.
  • The Spirit leads Jesus during His ministry.
  • The Spirit comes upon the Apostles at Pentecost.
  • The Spirit guides the Church.

The Holy Spirit is present from Genesis to Revelation.

The Holy Spirit in the Life of Jesus

The Holy Spirit played a central role in the earthly life of Christ.

  • Jesus was conceived by the Holy Ghost.
  • The Holy Spirit descended at His Baptism.
  • The Spirit led Him into the desert.
  • Jesus performed His ministry in the power of the Spirit.

Before His Ascension, Jesus promised that He would send the Holy Spirit to His followers.

“But the Paraclete, the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things.” — John 14:26

The Holy Spirit and the Church

At Pentecost, the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles.

This event marks the public beginning of the Church’s mission.

The Holy Spirit continues to:

  • Guide the Church.
  • Preserve the truth.
  • Inspire holiness.
  • Strengthen believers.
  • Work through the sacraments.

The Church lives by the power of the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit in Our Lives

The Holy Spirit is active in every Christian.

He:

  • Draws us to God.
  • Gives faith.
  • Helps us pray.
  • Strengthens us against sin.
  • Produces holiness.
  • Leads us toward Heaven.

Every growth in the Christian life is ultimately the work of God’s grace through the Holy Spirit.

Symbols of the Holy Spirit

Scripture uses several symbols to help us understand the Holy Spirit’s work.

Dove

A sign of peace, purity, and God’s presence.

Fire

A sign of God’s power and purification.

Wind

A sign of the Spirit’s invisible yet powerful action.

Water

A sign of life, cleansing, and rebirth.

Oil

A sign of consecration, healing, and strength.

These symbols point to the Spirit’s activity but are not the Holy Spirit Himself.

Common Misunderstandings

The Holy Spirit Is Not an “It”

The Holy Spirit is a Divine Person. Christians refer to Him as “He,” not “it.”

The Holy Spirit Is Not a Force

The Holy Spirit is not merely energy or power. He knows, loves, teaches, and acts personally.

The Holy Spirit Is Not Less Than the Father or Son

The Holy Spirit is fully God and equal to the Father and the Son.

Why the Holy Spirit Matters

Without the Holy Spirit:

  • We could not come to faith.
  • We could not grow in holiness.
  • We could not truly understand God’s revelation.
  • The Church could not fulfill her mission.

The Holy Spirit makes the Christian life possible.

Every Christian is called to grow in friendship with the Holy Spirit and become more open to His work.
