About This Directory This is the master CatholicG33k directory of the Bishops of Rome. Each Pope has one canonical biography, keeping the directory, biographies, succession navigation, and related resources connected. The directory follows the recognized succession of Roman Pontiffs through Pope Leo XIV. Dates from the ancient and medieval periods may be approximate; individual biographies distinguish established historical fact, primary testimony, later tradition, disciplinary acts, and matters of Catholic doctrine.
Numbering Note
The official sequence contains 267 pontifical entries, represented here by 265 unique biography pages. Pope Benedict IX appears three times in the official sequence—numbers 145, 147, and 150—because of his separated pontificates, but all three reigns are treated on one biography page. Antipopes and other disputed claimants are not inserted into the numbered succession of legitimate Roman Pontiffs.
