Miraculous Medal

A Marian Devotion of Faith, Protection, and Trust in God’s Grace

What Is the Miraculous Medal?

The Miraculous Medal is a Catholic sacramental associated with the Blessed Virgin Mary’s apparitions to St. Catherine Labouré in Paris, France, in 1830.

Through this devotion, Catholics are reminded of Mary’s loving intercession and God’s desire to pour abundant graces upon those who seek Him with faith.

The Apparitions to St. Catherine Labouré

In 1830, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to St. Catherine Labouré, a Daughter of Charity, and instructed her to have a medal struck according to the image she was shown.

Mary promised that those who wore the medal with confidence and devotion would receive many graces through God’s mercy.

The Symbols of the Medal

  • Mary Standing on the Globe: Her role in salvation history and her victory through Christ.
  • Rays of Light: The graces God gives through Mary’s intercession.
  • The Serpent: Symbolizing victory over sin and evil.
  • The Sacred Hearts: The Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
  • The Cross and M: Mary’s close union with the saving work of Christ.
  • Twelve Stars: Reflecting Mary’s queenship and biblical symbolism.

The Medal’s Inscription

Around the image of Mary appears the prayer:

“O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.”

This prayer reflects the Church’s belief in the Immaculate Conception and encourages the faithful to seek Mary’s intercession.

Why Catholics Wear the Medal

Catholics do not wear the Miraculous Medal as a lucky charm or superstition.

Rather, it serves as a sacramental—a sacred sign that disposes us to receive God’s grace and reminds us to live faithfully according to the Gospel.

The medal encourages prayer, conversion, trust in God’s providence, and devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

A Prayer of Trust

O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.

Blessed Mother, lead us closer to Jesus, help us remain faithful to His Gospel, and obtain for us the graces we need for salvation.
