What Is the Angelus?
The Angelus is a traditional Catholic devotion that commemorates the mystery of the Incarnation—the moment when the Son of God took flesh in the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Through this prayer, Catholics pause during the day to remember God’s plan of salvation and to unite themselves to Christ and His Mother.
The Meaning of the Angelus
The word “Angelus” comes from the opening words of the prayer: Angelus Domini nuntiavit Mariae — “The Angel of the Lord declared unto Mary.”
The devotion reflects upon the Annunciation, when the Archangel Gabriel announced to Mary that she would become the Mother of God.
Mary’s faithful response opened the way for the Incarnation, the saving mission of Jesus Christ, and the redemption of humanity.
When Is the Angelus Prayed?
Traditionally, Catholics pray the Angelus three times each day:
- 6:00 AM — Remembering the beginning of the day.
- 12:00 PM — Pausing at midday to reflect on God’s presence.
- 6:00 PM — Giving thanks at the close of the day.
Church bells historically announced these times and invited the faithful to pause for prayer wherever they were.

Why Catholics Pray the Angelus
The Angelus helps Catholics sanctify the day by repeatedly turning their thoughts toward God.
