A Holy Hour is a period of prayer spent in the presence of Jesus Christ, especially before the Blessed Sacrament.
Catholics dedicate this time to adoration, thanksgiving, repentance, intercession, and quiet conversation with the Lord.
Whether prayed before the exposed Eucharist or before the tabernacle, a Holy Hour is an opportunity to deepen one’s friendship with Christ.
The Origin of the Holy Hour
The devotion is inspired by Christ’s words in the Garden of Gethsemane:
“Could you not watch one hour with me?”
As Jesus prepared for His Passion, He invited His disciples to remain awake and pray with Him. Catholics continue to respond to that invitation through the practice of the Holy Hour.

Eucharistic Adoration
Many Catholics make Holy Hours during Eucharistic Adoration, when the Blessed Sacrament is exposed in a monstrance for public worship.
During Adoration, the faithful gaze upon Christ with faith, knowing that the same Lord who walked the roads of Galilee is truly present in the Eucharist.
