Holy Hour

Spending Time with Jesus in Prayer and Adoration

What Is a Holy Hour?

A Holy Hour is a period of prayer spent in the presence of Jesus Christ, especially before the Blessed Sacrament.

Catholics dedicate this time to adoration, thanksgiving, repentance, intercession, and quiet conversation with the Lord.

Whether prayed before the exposed Eucharist or before the tabernacle, a Holy Hour is an opportunity to deepen one’s friendship with Christ.

The Origin of the Holy Hour

The devotion is inspired by Christ’s words in the Garden of Gethsemane:

“Could you not watch one hour with me?”

As Jesus prepared for His Passion, He invited His disciples to remain awake and pray with Him. Catholics continue to respond to that invitation through the practice of the Holy Hour.

Why Catholics Make a Holy Hour

  • To adore Jesus truly present in the Eucharist.
  • To grow in intimacy with God through prayer.
  • To make reparation for sin.
  • To pray for personal intentions and the needs of the Church.
  • To seek guidance and strength for daily life.
  • To imitate the saints who spent time before the Blessed Sacrament.

How to Spend a Holy Hour

There is no single required format for a Holy Hour. Catholics often combine several forms of prayer during this time.

  • Silent prayer and meditation.
  • Reading Sacred Scripture.
  • Praying the Rosary.
  • Lectio Divina.
  • Examination of conscience.
  • Prayers of thanksgiving and intercession.
  • Simply resting in the presence of Christ.

Eucharistic Adoration

Many Catholics make Holy Hours during Eucharistic Adoration, when the Blessed Sacrament is exposed in a monstrance for public worship.

During Adoration, the faithful gaze upon Christ with faith, knowing that the same Lord who walked the roads of Galilee is truly present in the Eucharist.

Countless saints drew strength from spending time before the Blessed Sacrament.

The Fruits of a Holy Hour

Regular Holy Hours help Catholics grow in holiness, peace, discernment, and love for God.

Time spent with Christ transforms the soul, strengthens virtue, and deepens our awareness of His presence in daily life.

The Holy Hour teaches us to listen, trust, and remain close to the Lord.

A Prayer Before the Blessed Sacrament

Lord Jesus Christ, truly present in the Most Holy Eucharist, increase my faith, strengthen my hope, and inflame my heart with love.

Teach me to remain with You, to listen to Your voice, and to follow You faithfully each day.

Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, have mercy on us.
