Who Is God?
The Creator, Lord, and Perfect Love
Who Is God?
God is the eternal, all-powerful, all-knowing, and perfectly good Creator of all things.
He is not one being among many. He is the source of all existence, the One who gives life, meaning, and purpose to everything that exists.
Christians believe that God is personal, loving, and knowable because He has revealed Himself to humanity.
“God is love.” — 1 John 4:8
Does God Exist?
Catholics believe that human reason can come to know that God exists by reflecting on creation, order, truth, goodness, beauty, and the longing of the human heart.
The world does not explain itself. Everything that begins to exist depends on something else. Catholic teaching holds that the existence, order, and intelligibility of creation point toward a Creator.
Faith does not reject reason. Faith goes beyond reason, but it does not contradict it.
“The heavens shew forth the glory of God, and the firmament declareth the work of his hands.” — Psalm 18:2
What Do Christians Mean by “God”?
When Christians speak of God, they do not mean a force, an idea, or a distant power.
God is the one supreme Being: eternal, spiritual, almighty, all-knowing, perfectly good, and the Creator of Heaven and earth.
Everything else receives existence from God. God alone exists by His own power and depends on nothing outside Himself.
“I AM WHO AM.” — Exodus 3:14
God Reveals Himself
God is not silent. He has revealed Himself through creation, through the history of Israel, through the prophets, and most fully through Jesus Christ.
We can know some things about God by reason, but we know Him most deeply because He freely makes Himself known.
God reveals Himself because He desires us to know Him, love Him, and live in communion with Him.
“No man hath seen God at any time: the only begotten Son who is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.” — John 1:18
God Is Eternal
God has no beginning and no end.
He is not limited by time as creatures are. Everything in the universe changes, ages, and passes away, but God remains forever.
Because God is eternal, He is always faithful. His promises do not fail, and His love does not expire.
“Before the mountains were made, or the earth and the world was formed; from eternity and to eternity thou art God.” — Psalm 89:2
God Is Creator
God created all things out of nothing.
Everything that exists depends on Him: the universe, the angels, the earth, every living thing, and every human soul.
Creation is not an accident. God freely created out of wisdom and love.
“In the beginning God created heaven, and earth.” — Genesis 1:1
God Is All-Powerful
God is almighty. Nothing is impossible for Him.
His power is not selfish or chaotic. God’s power is always united to His wisdom, goodness, justice, and love.
Because God is almighty, we can trust Him even when life feels uncertain or beyond our control.
“For no word shall be impossible with God.” — Luke 1:37
God Is All-Knowing
God knows all things perfectly.
He knows the past, present, and future. He knows every heart, every thought, every suffering, and every need.
God’s knowledge is not cold or distant. He knows us personally and loves us completely.
“O Lord, thou hast proved me, and known me.” — Psalm 138:1
God Is Perfect Love
God does not merely have love. God is love.
His love is faithful, holy, merciful, and true. God’s love does not ignore sin, but calls us away from sin so that we may live in truth and freedom.
The greatest revelation of God’s love is Jesus Christ, who came into the world to save us.
“For God so loved the world, as to give his only begotten Son.” — John 3:16
Can We Know God?
Yes. We can know that God exists by reason, and we can know Him personally because He has revealed Himself.
God is greater than our minds can fully comprehend, but He is not unknowable.
We come to know God through creation, Scripture, prayer, the teaching of the Church, and above all through Jesus Christ.
“God is a spirit; and they that adore him, must adore him in spirit and in truth.” — John 4:24
Why Did God Create Us?
God did not create us because He was lonely or lacking something.
God is perfectly blessed in Himself. He created us freely out of love so that we might share in His goodness and eternal life.
Our purpose is to know God, love Him, serve Him, and be happy with Him forever.
“Thou hast made us for thyself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in thee.” — Saint Augustine, Confessions
