Stations of the Cross
Walking with Christ on the Road to Calvary
What Are the Stations of the Cross?
The Stations of the Cross are a traditional Catholic devotion that commemorates the suffering, death, and sacrificial love of Jesus Christ.
Through prayer and meditation, the faithful spiritually accompany Our Lord from His condemnation by Pontius Pilate to His burial in the tomb.
This devotion invites Catholics to reflect deeply on the Passion and to unite their own sufferings to the Cross of Christ.
History of the Devotion
The origins of the Stations of the Cross can be traced to Christian pilgrims who traveled to Jerusalem and followed the path believed to have been taken by Jesus on His way to Calvary.
Over time, the Church brought this pilgrimage experience to local parishes, allowing the faithful throughout the world to meditate upon Christ’s Passion without traveling to the Holy Land.
The Franciscans played a major role in promoting and preserving this devotion.

Why Catholics Pray the Stations
The Stations of the Cross help Catholics enter more deeply into the mystery of Christ’s redeeming sacrifice.
By contemplating each station, we grow in gratitude for His love, sorrow for our sins, and hope in the salvation won through His Passion.
The devotion teaches perseverance, humility, sacrifice, and trust in God amid suffering.
A Special Lenten Devotion
Although the Stations may be prayed at any time of year, they are especially associated with Lent and Holy Week.
Many parishes offer communal Stations of the Cross on Fridays during Lent, helping the faithful prepare spiritually for Easter.
The devotion reminds us that the road to Resurrection passes through the Cross.
Living the Stations Today
The Stations of the Cross invite us to carry our own crosses with faith, to support others in their struggles, and to trust Christ in every trial.
As we walk spiritually with Jesus to Calvary, we learn to follow Him more faithfully in our daily lives.
Every station reveals the depth of God’s love and the cost of our redemption.
A Prayer Before the Cross
Lord Jesus Christ, by Your holy Cross You redeemed the world. Grant us the grace to follow You faithfully, embrace our crosses with courage, and never lose hope in Your mercy.
We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You, because by Your holy Cross You have redeemed the world.
