Day 5 — Building on the Rock
The Prologue — Rule of St. Benedict Series
Building on the Rock
The Lord Jesus gives us a powerful image for the spiritual life.
“Whoever hears My words and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house upon rock. The rains fell, the floods rose, the winds beat against that house, and it did not collapse because it was founded on solid stone.”
Jesus Christ is teaching that true security is not found in wealth, comfort, or human strength. It is found in obedience to the Word of God.
Saint Benedict takes this Gospel image and applies it directly to our souls.
It is not enough to hear God’s truth. We must live it.
Many people admire the teachings of Christ. Fewer allow those teachings to shape their choices, habits, and desires. The difference between a stable life and a spiritual collapse is whether we put His words into practice.
Storms are inevitable.
Temptations will come. Trials will arise. Suffering, disappointment, and uncertainty will beat against every life.
The question is not whether storms will come.
The question is whether our foundation is Christ.
Saint Benedict reminds us that the Lord gives us time for a reason.
Every additional day is an act of mercy.
Every sunrise is a new opportunity to repent.
Every breath is a chance to turn away from sin and return to God.
Saint Paul asks, “Do you not realize that God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance?”
God’s patience is not indifference. It is an invitation.
The Lord is not eager to condemn. He says through the prophet, “I do not desire the death of the sinner, but that he should turn back and live.”
This reveals the heart of God.
He wants conversion, not destruction.
He desires mercy, healing, and eternal life.
Saint Benedict calls us to use the time we have been given wisely.
Build your life on Christ.
Hear His Word.
Put it into action.
Repent without delay.
And when the storms of life arrive, your soul will remain standing—firmly anchored on the Rock who never fails.
