Day 6 — Preparing for Spiritual Battle
The Prologue — Rule of St. Benedict Series
Preparing for Spiritual Battle
Saint Benedict brings us to a moment of decision.
We have asked the Lord who may dwell in His holy tent.
We have heard His answer.
Now only one thing remains.
We must do what He commands.
The Christian life is not built on admiration alone. It requires action. God has shown us the path to eternal life, but we must choose to walk it.
Saint Benedict tells us to prepare both heart and body for spiritual battle under the obedience of God’s commands.
This is the language of warfare.
The soul is not drifting aimlessly through life. It is engaged in a real struggle against sin, temptation, and the powers that seek to draw us away from God.
But we are not left to fight alone.
Benedict immediately reminds us to ask for divine grace whenever God’s commands seem difficult.
This is one of the most important truths of the spiritual life.
What appears impossible to human nature becomes possible through the grace of God.
We cannot conquer sin by our own strength.
We cannot become holy by willpower alone.
We need the living help of Christ in every battle.
Saint Benedict then speaks with urgency.
If we desire to escape eternal separation from God and inherit everlasting life, we must act now.
Not someday.
Not when life becomes more convenient.
Now.
As long as we are alive, as long as we still have time, as long as the light of this world shines upon us, the opportunity for repentance remains open.
Time is a gift, but it is also a responsibility.
Every day places eternity before us.
Every choice shapes the soul.
Every act of obedience prepares us for the Kingdom of Heaven.
Saint Benedict’s message is clear.
Prepare for battle.
Rely on God’s grace.
Use the time you have been given.
And hasten to do today what will matter forever.
