Day 4 — Walking the Path of the Gospel
The Prologue — Rule of St. Benedict Series
Walking the Path of the Gospel
Having been strengthened by faith and clothed with good works, Saint Benedict urges us to walk the path marked out by the Gospel so that we may one day behold the Lord who has called us into His Kingdom.
The Christian life is not passive. It is a journey. And if we desire to dwell in the eternal tent of God—to rest upon His holy mountain—we must move toward it with urgency, perseverance, and concrete acts of virtue.
Saint Benedict turns to the Psalms and asks the great question: “Lord, who may dwell in Your tent? Who may rest on Your holy mountain?”
Then the Lord Himself gives the answer.
It is the person who lives with integrity.
The one who practices justice.
The one who speaks truth from the heart.
The one who refuses deceit.
The one who harms no neighbor and spreads no slander.
This is the portrait of a soul being transformed by grace.
But Saint Benedict goes even deeper.
He teaches that temptation must be confronted immediately. Evil thoughts are to be seized while they are still small and thrown against Christ. Before they grow into habits, before they become words and actions, they must be surrendered to the Lord.
This is a profound lesson in spiritual warfare.
Sin rarely begins with outward actions. It begins in the hidden interior life. The battlefield is the heart, and victory belongs to those who bring every thought into obedience to Christ.
Yet even when we do good, Saint Benedict warns us not to become proud.
Any virtue we possess is not our own achievement. It is the work of God’s grace within us.
That is why the saints say with the Psalmist, “Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to Your name give the glory.”
And Saint Paul echoes the same truth: “By the grace of God I am what I am.”
This is the secret of authentic holiness.
Walk in truth.
Reject deceit.
Guard your thoughts.
Fight temptation quickly.
And give all glory to God.
The path to the Kingdom is marked by integrity, humility, and dependence on divine grace.
And those who walk this path, guided by the Gospel, will one day dwell forever in the presence of the Lord.
