Who Desires Life?
This beautiful invitation is highlighted by Saint Benedict of Nursia in The Rule of Saint Benedict.
If your heart responds, “I do,” God immediately reveals the path.
Guard your speech.
Do not use your tongue for lies, gossip, or harm.
Turn away from sin.
Choose what is good.
Seek peace.
And do not merely hope for it—pursue it with determination.
These simple commands form the foundation of a holy life.
They shape our words, our actions, and our relationships with others.
Then comes one of the most consoling promises in Scripture.
God says, “My eyes will be upon you. My ears will be attentive to your prayers. Before you call, I will say, ‘Here I am.’”
What an astonishing truth.
The Creator of the universe is not distant. He is attentive, loving, and ready to respond even before we finish speaking.
Saint Benedict asks, “What could be sweeter than this voice of the Lord?”
God is not hiding the way to happiness.
In His mercy, He clearly shows us the road to life.
Speak truth.
Reject evil.
Do good.
Seek peace.
Trust that God hears you.
The Lord still asks the same question today:
“Who desires life?”
And if you answer, “I do,” His response is immediate:
“Come. I will show you the way.”
