The Bible is the inspired Word of God written through human authors under the guidance of the Holy Ghost.

Although its books were composed across many centuries, cultures, languages, and literary forms, Scripture tells one unified story: God’s plan to save humanity through Jesus Christ.

The Bible is not merely a collection of ancient religious documents. Through its words, God reveals Himself, His covenant, His saving works, and the destiny for which He created us.

The Bible contains history, law, prophecy, poetry, wisdom, parables, Gospels, letters, and apocalyptic visions. These diverse books find their unity in Christ.

Divine and Human Authorship

Who Wrote the Bible?

God is the ultimate author of Sacred Scripture. He inspired human authors to write what He intended for the sake of our salvation.

These authors used their own language, vocabulary, culture, knowledge, experiences, and literary styles. Inspiration did not erase their humanity.

The Bible is therefore truly God’s Word and truly the work of human writers. Understanding a passage requires attention to both realities.

For prophecy came not by the will of man at any time: but the holy men of God spoke, inspired by the Holy Ghost.

Promise and Preparation

The Old Testament

The Old Testament contains the books written before the coming of Jesus Christ.

It tells of creation, Adam and Eve, Noah, Abraham, Moses, the Exodus, the covenant, the Law, the kingdom of David, the prophets, Israel’s worship, wisdom, suffering, and hope.

The Old Testament prepares the world for the Messiah. Its covenants, persons, institutions, sacrifices, prophecies, and patterns find their fulfillment in Christ.

And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded to them in all the scriptures, the things that were concerning him.

The New Testament

The New Testament centers on Jesus Christ and the Church He established.

The four Gospels proclaim His life, teaching, miracles, Passion, death, and Resurrection. Acts records the early Church’s mission after the Ascension. The Epistles instruct Christian communities in faith and life. Revelation unveils Christ’s victory and the fulfillment of God’s kingdom.

The New Testament reveals the fullness of the divine plan prepared throughout the Old.

And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us.

How Do Catholics Understand the Bible?

Catholics love and cherish Sacred Scripture as the inspired Word of God.

They also recognize that the Bible arose within the apostolic life of the Church and was entrusted to the Church for proclamation, worship, teaching, and faithful interpretation.

Catholics therefore read Scripture within Sacred Tradition and under the guidance of the Magisterium. These do not compete with the Bible; together they serve the one Word of God handed on from the Apostles.

Where Should I Start?

If you are new to Christianity, begin with one of the Gospels. Mark offers a direct and fast-moving account. Luke presents an orderly narrative with special attention to mercy and prayer. John leads the reader deeply into the identity of Christ.

Read slowly and ask: Who is Jesus? What does He reveal about God? What does He command? What promise does He make? How should I respond?

Do not become discouraged when a passage is difficult. Scripture is a lifelong gift, not a puzzle that must be solved immediately.

A small, faithful rhythm is better than an ambitious plan that quickly disappears.

Pray

Ask the Holy Spirit to open your mind and heart before you read.

Notice what the passage reveals about God, humanity, sin, grace, and discipleship.

Respond

Speak to God about what you read and choose one concrete act of faith or obedience.
