The Prologue — Rule of Saint Benedict Series (Day 2)
These reflections are not intended to be a line-by-line commentary on the Rule of Saint Benedict. Rather, they are personal reflections inspired by the wisdom of Saint Benedict and its application to daily Christian life.

“Now is the hour for us to rise from sleep.” (Romans 13:11)
Wake up.
That is the urgent cry of Sacred Scripture and the powerful challenge given by Saint Benedict in the Prologue of his Rule.
The spiritual life is not a time for drifting through life half-awake. It is a call to rise, to listen, and to walk in the light of God before the darkness overtakes us.
Echoing the words of Saint Paul, Benedict urges us to awaken—not merely from physical sleep, but from the deeper sleep of the soul. Spiritual sleep can take many forms: distraction, complacency, indifference, habitual sin, or simply becoming too comfortable in our relationship with God.
Benedict calls us to open our eyes to the divine light.
This light is Christ Himself, who enlightens every heart and reveals the path that leads to eternal life. Yet seeing that light requires attentiveness. We must be willing to stop, listen, and respond when God calls.
Saint Benedict then reminds us of the words of Scripture:
“Today, if you shall hear His voice, harden not your hearts.” (Psalm 94:8; Hebrews 3:15)
Today.
Not tomorrow. Not when life becomes less busy. Not when circumstances improve.
God’s grace is offered now.
The Lord speaks to us each day through Sacred Scripture, through the teachings of His Church, through prayer, through the sacraments, and through the quiet inspirations He places within our hearts.
The question is not whether God is speaking.
The question is whether we are listening.
Jesus repeatedly tells His disciples:
“He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.” (Matthew 11:15)
The Christian life begins with listening—listening to the voice of the Good Shepherd and following wherever He leads.
And what does the Lord say?
“Come, children, hearken to me: I will teach you the fear of the Lord.” (Psalm 33:12)
This fear of the Lord is not terror or anxiety. It is reverence, awe, and loving respect for God. It is the desire to remain close to Him and never be separated from His friendship.
Toward the end of this section, Saint Benedict offers a striking invitation:
“Run while you have the light of life.”
Life is brief. Time is a gift. The opportunity to repent, to grow in holiness, and to seek God is being offered today.
We do not know how many tomorrows we have.
For that reason, Benedict urges us not to delay our conversion. We are called to respond to God’s grace while it is being offered, to walk in the light while it still shines before us.
His message remains as relevant now as it was fifteen centuries ago:
Wake up from spiritual sleep.
Listen to God’s voice today.
Walk in the light of Christ.
Run toward the Lord with all your heart before the night falls.
God is searching for willing hearts.
And in the midst of the noise and distractions of the world, He asks a profound question:
“Who is the man that desireth life: who loveth to see good days?” (Psalm 33:13)
The answer begins when we awaken and respond.
Reflection
Are there areas of your spiritual life where you have become complacent or distracted?
Have you postponed prayer, repentance, or a deeper commitment to Christ, assuming there will always be more time?
Today, ask God to awaken your heart and help you recognize His voice amid the distractions of daily life. Do not wait for a more convenient moment. Respond to His grace now.
Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ, awaken my soul from every form of spiritual sleep. Open my eyes to Your light and my ears to hear Your voice. Remove from my heart all complacency, distraction, and indifference. Give me the grace to respond to You today with faith, courage, and love. Help me to walk in Your light and follow You faithfully all the days of my life. Amen.
