How Do I Become a Christian?

Faith, Repentance, Baptism, and Life in Christ

God’s Invitation

Becoming a Christian begins with God’s invitation.

God created you, loves you, and desires a relationship with you. Through Jesus Christ, He invites you to receive His grace, forgiveness, and eternal life.

Christianity is not simply joining a religion or following a set of rules. It is entering into a relationship with Jesus Christ and becoming His disciple.

“Come to me, all you that labour, and are burdened, and I will refresh you.” — Matthew 11:28

Faith in Jesus Christ

The first step in becoming a Christian is faith.

Faith means believing what God has revealed and placing your trust in Jesus Christ.

Christians believe that Jesus is the Son of God who died for our sins and rose from the dead.

Faith is more than knowing facts about Jesus. It is trusting Him with your life.

“For by grace you are saved through faith.” — Ephesians 2:8

Repentance

Faith leads to repentance.

Repentance means turning away from sin and turning toward God.

Every person has sinned and needs God’s mercy.

Repentance is not merely feeling sorry for sin. It is a sincere desire to change, seek forgiveness, and follow God’s will.

“Do penance: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” — Matthew 4:17

Baptism

Jesus taught that Baptism is the ordinary way we enter into the Christian life.

Through Baptism:

  • Sin is forgiven.
  • We become children of God.
  • We receive God’s grace.
  • We become members of Christ’s Body.
  • We are incorporated into His Church.

Jesus taught:

“He that believeth and is baptized, shall be saved.” — Mark 16:16

Baptism is not merely a symbol. It is a sacrament instituted by Christ through which God truly works in our lives.

Receiving the Gift of Grace

Salvation is God’s gift.

No one earns salvation through good works alone. We are saved by God’s grace, which He freely gives through Jesus Christ.

Grace heals our souls, strengthens us against sin, and helps us grow in holiness.

The Christian life begins with grace and continues through grace.

Following Christ

Becoming a Christian is not a one-time event.

It is the beginning of a lifelong journey of discipleship.

Christ calls His followers to:

  • Pray regularly.
  • Read Sacred Scripture.
  • Worship God.
  • Love others.
  • Serve those in need.
  • Grow in holiness.

“If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.” — Matthew 16:24

Becoming Part of Christ’s Church

Jesus did not establish isolated believers. He established a Church.

Through the Church, Christians receive teaching, fellowship, worship, and the sacraments.

The Church helps believers grow in faith and remain connected to Christ.

Catholics believe that Jesus founded one Church and entrusted it to the Apostles, whose successors continue their ministry today.

What If I Am Not Ready?

Many people have questions before taking the next step.

That is normal.

Faith often begins with seeking, learning, and asking honest questions.

God does not ask us to understand everything immediately. He invites us to seek Him sincerely and trust Him step by step.

“Seek, and you shall find.” — Matthew 7:7
