What Is the Bible?
Sacred Scripture and God’s Plan of Salvation
The Inspired Word of God
The Bible is the inspired Word of God.
Christians believe that God inspired human authors to write the books of Sacred Scripture under the guidance of the Holy Ghost. Although written by many authors over many centuries, the Bible tells one unified story: God’s plan to save humanity through Jesus Christ.
The Bible is not simply a collection of ancient writings. It is God’s revelation of Himself and His relationship with humanity.
“All scripture, inspired of God, is profitable to teach, to reprove, to correct, to instruct in justice.” — 2 Timothy 3:16
What Is the Bible About?
The Bible tells the story of God’s love for humanity and His plan of salvation.
From beginning to end, Scripture reveals how God created us, how sin entered the world, and how He worked throughout history to bring salvation through Jesus Christ.
- Creation
- The Fall of Humanity
- God’s Covenant with Israel
- The Promise of a Savior
- The Coming of Jesus Christ
- The Birth of the Church
- The Promise of Eternal Life
Although the Bible contains many books, stories, poems, letters, and prophecies, they all point ultimately to Jesus Christ.
“You search the scriptures… and the same are they that give testimony of me.” — John 5:39
Who Wrote the Bible?
God is the ultimate author of Sacred Scripture.
He inspired human authors who wrote using their own language, experiences, culture, and literary styles.
Because of this, the Bible is both:
- Truly God’s Word
- Truly written by human authors
Catholics believe that everything God intended to teach through Scripture is true and trustworthy.
The Old Testament
The Old Testament contains the books written before the coming of Jesus Christ.
These books tell the story of:
- Creation
- Adam and Eve
- Noah
- Abraham
- Moses
- King David
- The Prophets
- God’s covenant with Israel
The Old Testament prepares the world for the coming of the Messiah.
Its promises, prophecies, and events find their fulfillment in Jesus Christ.
The New Testament
The New Testament centers on Jesus Christ and the Church He established.
The Four Gospels
Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John recount the life, teachings, miracles, death, and Resurrection of Jesus.
Acts of the Apostles
The story of the early Church after Christ’s Ascension.
The Epistles
Letters written by the Apostles to teach and encourage Christians.
Revelation
A prophetic vision of Christ’s final victory and the fulfillment of God’s kingdom.
The New Testament reveals the fullness of God’s plan for salvation through Jesus Christ.
How Do Catholics Understand the Bible?
Catholics love and cherish Sacred Scripture.
At the same time, Catholics believe that Christ gave His Church the responsibility of faithfully preserving and interpreting God’s Word.
For this reason, Catholics read Scripture within the life of the Church and alongside Sacred Tradition.
The Bible was given to the Church, and the Church helps us understand it correctly.
This protects Christians from misunderstanding difficult passages and helps us remain faithful to what Christ taught.
Where Should I Start Reading?
If you are new to Christianity, begin with one of the Gospels.
Many people start with:
- The Gospel of Mark
- The Gospel of John
- The Gospel of Luke
As you read, ask:
- Who is Jesus?
- What does He teach?
- What does He reveal about God?
- What is He inviting me to do?
Do not worry about understanding everything immediately. Begin by getting to know Jesus Christ.
