Who Is Jesus?

Jesus Christ is the central figure of Christianity and the most important person in human history.

Christians believe that Jesus is not merely a prophet, teacher, or holy man. He is the eternal Son of God who became man for our salvation.

More than two thousand years ago, Jesus was born of the Virgin Mary in Bethlehem. He preached the Kingdom of God, performed miracles, healed the sick, forgave sins, died on the Cross for our salvation, rose from the dead, and reigns forever as Lord.

Understanding who Jesus is is the foundation of Christianity. Everything Christians believe flows from the truth of His identity.

“And this is eternal life: That they may know thee, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.” — John 17:3

Jesus Was a Real Historical Person

Jesus of Nazareth was not a myth, legend, or fictional character. He lived in first-century Judea during the Roman Empire and was crucified under the Roman governor Pontius Pilate.

His life, ministry, death, and followers are recorded in the four Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Ancient historians outside the Bible also refer to Jesus and the early Christian movement, including His crucifixion under Pontius Pilate.

The question is not whether Jesus existed. The real question is: Who was He?

Jesus Claimed to Be More Than a Prophet

Many people view Jesus as a wise teacher, moral example, or religious leader. Christians certainly believe He was all of these things.

However, Jesus made claims that went far beyond those of an ordinary teacher.

He forgave sins:

“Son, thy sins are forgiven thee.” — Mark 2:5

He accepted worship:

“And they adored him.” — Matthew 28:17

He declared:

“Before Abraham was made, I am.” — John 8:58

And He proclaimed:

“I and the Father are one.” — John 10:30

Christians believe Jesus is not merely a messenger from God, but God Himself made man.

For this reason, Christians do not merely admire Jesus as a teacher. They worship Him as Lord and God.

The Incarnation: God Became Man

One of the greatest mysteries of the Christian faith is the Incarnation. The word Incarnation means “made flesh.”

Christians believe that the eternal Son of God entered human history and took on a human nature while remaining fully divine.

“And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us.” — John 1:14

Jesus did not cease to be God when He became man. Rather, He united a true human nature to His divine nature.

Because He is truly human, Jesus understands our joys, struggles, temptations, and sufferings. Because He is truly God, He has the power to save us from sin and bring us into communion with the Father.

Born of the Virgin Mary

God prepared the way for the coming of Jesus through the Blessed Virgin Mary. When the Angel Gabriel appeared to Mary, he announced that she would conceive a son by the power of the Holy Ghost.

“Behold thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and shalt bring forth a son; and thou shalt call his name Jesus.” — Luke 1:31

“Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it done to me according to thy word.” — Luke 1:38

Jesus was conceived by the power of the Holy Ghost and born of the Virgin Mary in Bethlehem. The Virgin Birth reveals that Jesus is both truly human and uniquely the Son of God.

The Public Ministry of Jesus

At about thirty years of age, Jesus began His public ministry. For approximately three years He traveled throughout Galilee and Judea proclaiming the Kingdom of God.

He taught with authority, called people to repentance and faith, healed the sick, gave sight to the blind, cleansed lepers, cast out demons, forgave sins, and even raised the dead.

Jesus also called twelve Apostles to be His closest disciples and entrusted them with continuing His mission.

“Do penance: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” — Matthew 4:17

Jesus Died for Our Salvation

Humanity was created for friendship with God, but sin wounded that relationship. Because of His great love for us, Jesus willingly offered Himself on the Cross to save us from sin and reconcile us to the Father.

His death was not a defeat. It was the perfect act of love and obedience through which Christ opened the way to forgiveness and eternal life.

“The Son of man is not come to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a redemption for many.” — Matthew 20:28

Jesus Rose from the Dead

Three days after His crucifixion, Jesus rose bodily from the dead.

The Resurrection is the central event of Christianity. It confirms that Jesus is who He claimed to be and that His victory over sin and death is real.

The Resurrection is not merely symbolic. Christians believe that Jesus truly and physically rose from the dead in a glorified body and appeared to His disciples.

“And if Christ be not risen again, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain.” — 1 Corinthians 15:14

Because Jesus lives, Christians have hope in eternal life. Death does not have the final word.

Jesus Reigns Forever

After His Resurrection, Jesus ascended into Heaven and reigns at the right hand of the Father.

Christians proclaim Jesus not only as Savior, but also as Lord. He is alive today, He reigns forever, and He will come again in glory.

“That in the name of Jesus every knee should bow.” — Philippians 2:10

Jesus Established His Church

Before ascending into Heaven, Jesus established His Church and entrusted His mission to the Apostles. The Church continues Christ’s mission by preaching the Gospel, administering the sacraments, and leading people to salvation.

“Going therefore, teach ye all nations; baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.” — Matthew 28:19

Catholics believe that Jesus founded one Church and entrusted His teaching, sacraments, and authority to the Apostles. The Catholic Church preserves that apostolic faith and mission to this day.

Through the Church, Christ continues to teach, sanctify, and guide His people throughout the world.
