Canon Law

The Legal Framework of the Catholic Church

What Is Canon Law?

Canon Law is the body of laws and regulations that govern the Catholic Church.

Just as nations have civil laws, the Church has laws that guide her worship, governance, sacraments, rights, responsibilities, and administration.

Canon Law exists to help the Church fulfill her mission and promote the salvation of souls.

Why Does the Church Have Laws?

The Church is both a spiritual and visible society.

Throughout history the Church has developed laws to protect the faithful, preserve good order, administer the sacraments properly, and ensure justice within the Christian community.

“The salvation of souls must always be the supreme law in the Church.”

How the Code Is Organized

The 1983 Code of Canon Law contains over 1,700 canons.

It is organized into seven major books:

  1. General Norms
  2. The People of God
  3. The Teaching Function of the Church
  4. The Sanctifying Function of the Church
  5. Temporal Goods
  6. Sanctions in the Church
  7. Processes
