Human Dignity

Every Person Is Created in the Image of God

What Is Human Dignity?

Human dignity is the inherent worth and value possessed by every human person.

Every person has dignity not because of intelligence, wealth, age, abilities, or achievements, but because every person is created by God and in His image.

Human dignity belongs to every human being from conception until natural death.

“And God created man to his own image: to the image of God he created him.” — Genesis 1:27

Created in the Image of God

The Book of Genesis teaches that human beings are uniquely created in the image and likeness of God.

This means every human life has a sacred value that must be respected and protected.

Because of this, every person deserves love, justice, and respect.

Dignity Does Not Depend on Ability

Human dignity is not earned.

It does not depend on age, health, intelligence, social status, productivity, or success.

The unborn child, the elderly person, the disabled individual, the poor, and the powerful all possess the same God-given dignity.

Human Dignity and Jesus Christ

Jesus Christ reveals the greatness of every human person.

The Son of God became man and entered human history.

By His Incarnation, Christ demonstrated the immense value of human life and human nature.

Throughout His ministry, Jesus showed special care for the poor, the sick, the forgotten, and those rejected by society.

Human Dignity and Human Rights

Because every person possesses dignity, every person possesses fundamental rights.

These include the right to life, religious freedom, family life, education, work, and participation in society.

Rights are rooted in human dignity and carry corresponding responsibilities.

Respect for Human Life

The Church teaches that all human life is sacred.

Because every person bears God’s image, Christians are called to defend and protect life at every stage.

Respect for human dignity influences how we treat the unborn, the elderly, the poor, the sick, the imprisoned, and every person we encounter.

Human Dignity and Love of Neighbor

Jesus teaches us to love our neighbor as ourselves.

Recognizing the dignity of others helps us treat people with compassion, fairness, patience, and respect.

Every act of kindness acknowledges the value of another person.

Human Dignity and Social Justice

Human dignity is the foundation of Catholic social teaching.

The Church calls Christians to promote justice, defend the vulnerable, and work for the common good.

A society is judged in part by how it treats its weakest members.
