Matthew 26

And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended all these words, he said to his disciples:

Et factum est : cum consummasset Jesus sermones hos omnes, dixit discipulis suis:

Καὶ ἐγένετο ὅτε ἐτέλεσεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς πάντας τοὺς λόγους τούτους, εἶπεν τοῖς μαθηταῖς αὐτοῦ:

You know that after two days shall be the pasch: and the Son of man shall be delivered up to be crucified.

Scitis quia post biduum Pascha fiet, et Filius hominis tradetur ut crucifigatur.

οἴδατε ὅτι μετὰ δύο ἡμέρας τὸ πάσχα γίνεται, καὶ ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου παραδίδοται εἰς τὸ σταυρωθῆναι.

Then were gathered together the chief priests and ancients of the people, into the court of the high priest, who was called Caiphas:

Tunc congregati sunt principes sacerdotum, et seniores populi, in atrium principis sacerdotum, qui dicebatur Caiphas:

Τότε συνήχθησαν οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ πρεσβύτεροι τοῦ λαοῦ εἰς τὴν αὐλὴν τοῦ ἀρχιερέως τοῦ λεγομένου Καϊάφα,

And they consulted together that by subtilty they might apprehend Jesus and put him to death.

et consilium fecerunt ut Jesum dolo tenerent, et occiderent.

καὶ συνεβουλεύσαντο ἵνα τὸν Ἰησοῦν δόλῳ κρατήσωσιν καὶ ἀποκτείνωσιν:

But they said: Not on the festival day, lest perhaps there should be a tumult among the people.

Dicebant autem : Non in die festo, ne forte tumultus fieret in populo.

ἔλεγον δέ: μὴ ἐν τῇ ἑορτῇ, ἵνα μὴ θόρυβος γένηται ἐν τῷ λαῷ.

And when Jesus was in Bethania, in the house of Simon the leper,

Cum autem Jesus esset in Bethania in domo Simonis leprosi,

Τοῦ δὲ Ἰησοῦ γενομένου ἐν Βηθανίᾳ ἐν οἰκίᾳ Σίμωνος τοῦ λεπροῦ,

There came to him a woman having an alabaster box of precious ointment and poured it on his head as he was at table.

accessit ad eum mulier habens alabastrum unguenti pretiosi, et effudit super caput ipsius recumbentis.

προσῆλθεν αὐτῷ γυνὴ ἔχουσα ἀλάβαστρον μύρου βαρυτίμου καὶ κατέχεεν ἐπὶ τῆς κεφαλῆς αὐτοῦ ἀνακειμένου.

And the disciples seeing it had indignation, saying: To what purpose is this waste?

Videntes autem discipuli, indignati sunt, dicentes : Ut quid perditio hæc?

ἰδόντες δὲ οἱ μαθηταὶ ἠγανάκτησαν λέγοντες: εἰς τί ἡ ἀπώλεια αὕτη;

For this might have been sold for much and given to the poor.

potuit enim istud venundari multo, et dari pauperibus.

ἐδύνατο γὰρ τοῦτο πραθῆναι πολλοῦ καὶ δοθῆναι πτωχοῖς.

And Jesus knowing it, said to them: Why do you trouble this woman? For she hath wrought a good work upon me.

Sciens autem Jesus, ait illis : Quid molesti estis huic mulieri? opus enim bonum operata est in me.

γνοὺς δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς: τί κόπους παρέχετε τῇ γυναικί; ἔργον γὰρ καλὸν ἠργάσατο εἰς ἐμέ.

For the poor you have always with you: but me you have not always.

Nam semper pauperes habetis vobiscum : me autem non semper habetis.

πάντοτε γὰρ τοὺς πτωχοὺς ἔχετε μεθ' ἑαυτῶν, ἐμὲ δὲ οὐ πάντοτε ἔχετε.

For she in pouring this ointment on my body hath done it for my burial.

Mittens enim hæc unguentum hoc in corpus meum, ad sepeliendum me fecit.

βαλοῦσα γὰρ αὕτη τὸ μύρον τοῦτο ἐπὶ τοῦ σώματός μου πρὸς τὸ ἐνταφιάσαι με ἐποίησεν.

Amen I say to you, wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, that also which she hath done shall be told for a memory of her.

Amen dico vobis, ubicumque prædicatum fuerit hoc Evangelium in toto mundo, dicetur et quod hæc fecit in memoriam ejus.

ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν, ὅπου ἐὰν κηρυχθῇ τὸ εὐαγγέλιον τοῦτο ἐν ὅλῳ τῷ κόσμῳ, λαληθήσεται καὶ ὃ ἐποίησεν αὕτη εἰς μνημόσυνον αὐτῆς.

Then went one of the twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot, to the chief priests.

Tunc abiit unus de duodecim, qui dicebatur Judas Iscariotes, ad principes sacerdotum:

Τότε πορευθεὶς εἷς τῶν δώδεκα, ὁ λεγόμενος Ἰούδας Ἰσκαριώτης, πρὸς τοὺς ἀρχιερεῖς

And said to them: What will you give me, and I will deliver him unto you? But they appointed him thirty pieces of silver.

et ait illis : Quid vultis mihi dare, et ego vobis eum tradam? At illi constituerunt ei triginta argenteos.

εἶπεν: τί θέλετέ μοι δοῦναι, κἀγὼ ὑμῖν παραδώσω αὐτόν; οἱ δὲ ἔστησαν αὐτῷ τριάκοντα ἀργύρια.

And from thenceforth he sought opportunity to betray him.

Et exinde quærebat opportunitatem ut eum traderet.

καὶ ἀπὸ τότε ἐζήτει εὐκαιρίαν ἵνα αὐτὸν παραδῷ.

And on the first day of the Azymes, the disciples came to Jesus, saying: Where wilt thou that we prepare for thee to eat the pasch?

Prima autem die azymorum accesserunt discipuli ad Jesum, dicentes : Ubi vis paremus tibi comedere Pascha?

Τῇ δὲ πρώτῃ τῶν ἀζύμων προσῆλθον οἱ μαθηταὶ τῷ Ἰησοῦ λέγοντες: ποῦ θέλεις ἑτοιμάσωμέν σοι φαγεῖν τὸ πάσχα;

But Jesus said: Go ye into the city to a certain man and say to him: The master saith, My time is near at hand. With thee I make the pasch with my disciples.

At Jesus dixit : Ite in civitatem ad quemdam, et dicite ei : Magister dicit : Tempus meum prope est, apud te facio Pascha cum discipulis meis.

ὁ δὲ εἶπεν: ὑπάγετε εἰς τὴν πόλιν πρὸς τὸν δεῖνα καὶ εἴπατε αὐτῷ: ὁ διδάσκαλος λέγει: ὁ καιρός μου ἐγγύς ἐστιν, πρὸς σὲ ποιῶ τὸ πάσχα μετὰ τῶν μαθητῶν μου.

And the disciples did as Jesus appointed to them: and they prepared the pasch.

Et fecerunt discipuli sicut constituit illis Jesus, et paraverunt Pascha.

καὶ ἐποίησαν οἱ μαθηταὶ ὡς συνέταξεν αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς, καὶ ἡτοίμασαν τὸ πάσχα.

But when it was evening, he sat down with his twelve disciples.

Vespere autem facto, discumbebat cum duodecim discipulis suis.

Ὀψίας δὲ γενομένης ἀνέκειτο μετὰ τῶν δώδεκα.[maqhtwn*]

And whilst they were eating, he said: Amen I say to you that one of you is about to betray me.

Et edentibus illis, dixit : Amen dico vobis, quia unus vestrum me traditurus est.

καὶ ἐσθιόντων αὐτῶν εἶπεν: ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι εἷς ἐξ ὑμῶν παραδώσει με.

And they being very much troubled began every one to say: Is it I, Lord?

Et contristati valde, cœperunt singuli dicere : Numquid ego sum Domine?

καὶ λυπούμενοι σφόδρα ἤρξαντο λέγειν αὐτῷ εἷς ἕκαστος: μήτι ἐγώ εἰμι, κύριε;

But he answering said: He that dippeth his hand with me in the dish, he shall betray me.

At ipse respondens, ait : Qui intingit mecum manum in paropside, hic me tradet.

ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν: ὁ ἐμβάψας μετ' ἐμοῦ τὴν χεῖρα ἐν τῷ τρυβλίῳ, οὗτός με παραδώσει.

The Son of man indeed goeth, as it is written of him. But woe to that man by whom the Son of man shall be betrayed. It were better for him, if that man had not been born.

Filius quidem hominis vadit, sicut scriptum est de illo : væ autem homini illi, per quem Filius hominis tradetur! bonum erat ei, si natus non fuisset homo ille.

ὁ μὲν υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ὑπάγει καθὼς γέγραπται περὶ αὐτοῦ. οὐαὶ δὲ τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ ἐκείνῳ δι' οὗ ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου παραδίδοται: καλὸν ἦν αὐτῷ εἰ οὐκ ἐγεννήθη ὁ ἄνθρωπος ἐκεῖνος.

And Judas that betrayed him answering, said: Is it I, Rabbi? He saith to him: Thou hast said it.

Respondens autem Judas, qui tradidit eum, dixit : Numquid ego sum Rabbi? Ait illi : Tu dixisti.

ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ Ἰούδας ὁ παραδιδοὺς αὐτὸν εἶπεν: μήτι ἐγώ εἰμι, ῥαββί; λέγει αὐτῷ: σὺ εἶπας.

And whilst they were at supper, Jesus took bread and blessed and broke and gave to his disciples and said: Take ye and eat. This is my body.

Cœnantibus autem eis, accepit Jesus panem, et benedixit, ac fregit, deditque discipulis suis, et ait : Accipite, et comedite : hoc est corpus meum.

Ἐσθιόντων δὲ αὐτῶν λαβὼν ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἄρτον καὶ εὐλογήσας ἔκλασεν καὶ δοὺς τοῖς μαθηταῖς εἶπεν: λάβετε φάγετε: τοῦτό ἐστιν τὸ σῶμά μου.

And taking the chalice, he gave thanks and gave to them, saying: Drink ye all of this.

Et accipiens calicem, gratias egit : et dedit illis, dicens : Bibite ex hoc omnes.

καὶ λαβὼν ποτήριον [καὶ] εὐχαριστήσας ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς λέγων: πίετε ἐξ αὐτοῦ πάντες:

For this is my blood of the new testament, which shall be shed for many unto remission of sins.

Hic est enim sanguis meus novi testamenti, qui pro multis effundetur in remissionem peccatorum.

τοῦτο γάρ ἐστιν τὸ αἷμά μου τῆς διαθήκης τὸ περὶ πολλῶν ἐκχυννόμενον εἰς ἄφεσιν ἁμαρτιῶν.

And I say to you, I will not drink from henceforth of this fruit of the vine until that day when I shall drink it with you new in the kingdom of my Father.

Dico autem vobis : non bibam amodo de hoc genimine vitis usque in diem illum, cum illud bibam vobiscum novum in regno Patris mei.

λέγω δὲ ὑμῖν, οὐ μὴ πίω ἀπ' ἄρτι ἐκ τούτου τοῦ γενήματος τῆς ἀμπέλου ἕως τῆς ἡμέρας ἐκείνης ὅταν αὐτὸ πίνω μεθ' ὑμῶν καινὸν ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ τοῦ πατρός μου.

And a hymn being said, they went out unto mount Olivet.

Et hymno dicto, exierunt in montem Oliveti.

Καὶ ὑμνήσαντες ἐξῆλθον εἰς τὸ ὄρος τῶν ἐλαιῶν.

Then Jesus saith to them: All you shall be scandalized in me this night. For it is written: I will strike the shepherd: and the sheep of the flock shall be dispersed.

Tunc dicit illis Jesus : Omnes vos scandalum patiemini in me in ista nocte. Scriptum est enim : Percutiam pastorem, et dispergentur oves gregis.

τότε λέγει αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς: πάντες ὑμεῖς σκανδαλισθήσεσθε ἐν ἐμοὶ ἐν τῇ νυκτὶ ταύτῃ, γέγραπται γάρ: πατάξω τὸν ποιμένα, καὶ διασκορπισθήσονται τὰ πρόβατα τῆς ποίμνης.

But after I shall be risen again, I will go before you into Galilee.

Postquam autem resurrexero, præcedam vos in Galilæam.

μετὰ δὲ τὸ ἐγερθῆναί με προάξω ὑμᾶς εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν.

And Peter answering, said to him: Although all shall be scandalized in thee, I will never be scandalized.

Respondens autem Petrus, ait illi : Et si omnes scandalizati fuerint in te, ego numquam scandalizabor.

ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ὁ Πέτρος εἶπεν αὐτῷ: εἰ πάντες σκανδαλισθήσονται ἐν σοί, ἐγὼ οὐδέποτε σκανδαλισθήσομαι.

Jesus said to him: Amen I say to thee that in this night before the cock crow, thou wilt deny me thrice.

Ait illi Jesus : Amen dico tibi, quia in hac nocte, antequam gallus cantet, ter me negabis.

ἔφη αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς: ἀμὴν λέγω σοι ὅτι ἐν ταύτῃ τῇ νυκτὶ πρὶν ἀλέκτορα φωνῆσαι τρὶς ἀπαρνήσῃ με.

Peter saith to him: Yea, though I should die with thee, I will not deny thee. And in like manner said all the disciples.

Ait illi Petrus : Etiamsi oportuerit me mori tecum, non te negabo. Similiter et omnes discipuli dixerunt.

λέγει αὐτῷ ὁ Πέτρος: κἂν δέῃ με σὺν σοὶ ἀποθανεῖν, οὐ μή σε ἀπαρνήσομαι. ὁμοίως καὶ πάντες οἱ μαθηταὶ εἶπαν.

Then Jesus came with them into a country place which is called Gethsemani. And he said to his disciples: Sit you here, till I go yonder and pray.

Tunc venit Jesus cum illis in villam, quæ dicitur Gethsemani, et dixit discipulis suis : Sedete hic donec vadam illuc, et orem.

Τότε ἔρχεται μετ' αὐτῶν ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἰς χωρίον λεγόμενον Γεθσημανί, καὶ λέγει τοῖς μαθηταῖς, καθίσατε αὐτοῦ ἕως οὗ ἀπελθὼν ἐκεῖ προσεύξωμαι.

And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to grow sorrowful and to be sad.

Et assumpto Petro, et duobus filiis Zebedæi, cœpit contristari et mœstus esse.

καὶ παραλαβὼν τὸν Πέτρον καὶ τοὺς δύο υἱοὺς Ζεβεδαίου ἤρξατο λυπεῖσθαι καὶ ἀδημονεῖν.

Then he saith to them: My soul is sorrowful even unto death. Stay you here and watch with me.

Tunc ait illis : Tristis est anima mea usque ad mortem : sustinete hic, et vigilate mecum.

τότε λέγει αὐτοῖς: περίλυπός ἐστιν ἡ ψυχή μου ἕως θανάτου: μείνατε ὧδε καὶ γρηγορεῖτε μετ' ἐμοῦ.

And going a little further, he fell upon his face, praying and saying: My Father, if it be possible, let this chalice pass from me. Nevertheless, not as I will but as thou wilt.

Et progressus pusillum, procidit in faciem suam, orans, et dicens : Pater mi, si possibile est, transeat a me calix iste : verumtamen non sicut ego volo, sed sicut tu.

καὶ προελθὼν μικρὸν ἔπεσεν ἐπὶ πρόσωπον αὐτοῦ προσευχόμενος καὶ λέγων: πάτερ, μου εἰ δυνατόν ἐστιν, παρελθάτω ἀπ' ἐμοῦ τὸ ποτήριον τοῦτο: πλὴν οὐχ ὡς ἐγὼ θέλω ἀλλ' ὡς σύ.

And he cometh to his disciples and findeth them asleep. And he saith to Peter: What? Could you not watch one hour with me?

Et venit ad discipulos suos, et invenit eos dormientes, et dicit Petro : Sic non potuistis una hora vigilare mecum?

καὶ ἔρχεται πρὸς τοὺς μαθητὰς καὶ εὑρίσκει αὐτοὺς καθεύδοντας, καὶ λέγει τῷ Πέτρῳ: οὕτως οὐκ ἰσχύσατε μίαν ὥραν γρηγορῆσαι μετ' ἐμοῦ;

Watch ye: and pray that ye enter not into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.

Vigilate, et orate ut non intretis in tentationem. Spiritus quidem promptus est, caro autem infirma.

γρηγορεῖτε καὶ προσεύχεσθε, ἵνα μὴ εἰσέλθητε εἰς πειρασμόν: τὸ μὲν πνεῦμα πρόθυμον, ἡ δὲ σὰρξ ἀσθενής.

Again the second time, he went and prayed, saying: My Father, if this chalice may not pass away, but I must drink it, thy will be done.

Iterum secundo abiit, et oravit, dicens : Pater mi, si non potest hic calix transire nisi bibam illum, fiat voluntas tua.

πάλιν ἐκ δευτέρου ἀπελθὼν προσηύξατο [λέγων]: πάτερ μου, εἰ οὐ δύναται τοῦτο παρελθεῖν ἐὰν μὴ αὐτὸ πίω, γενηθήτω τὸ θέλημά σου.

And he cometh again and findeth them sleeping: for their eyes were heavy.

Et venit iterum, et invenit eos dormientes : erant enim oculi eorum gravati.

καὶ ἐλθὼν πάλιν εὗρεν αὐτοὺς καθεύδοντας: ἦσαν γὰρ αὐτῶν οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ βεβαρημένοι.

And leaving them, he went again: and he prayed the third time, saying the selfsame word.

Et relictis illis, iterum abiit, et oravit tertio, eumdem sermonem dicens.

καὶ ἀφεὶς αὐτοὺς πάλιν ἀπελθὼν προσηύξατο ἐκ τρίτου, τὸν αὐτὸν λόγον εἰπὼν πάλιν.

Then he cometh to his disciples and said to them: Sleep ye now and take your rest. Behold the hour is at hand: and the Son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of sinners.

Tunc venit ad discipulos suos, et dicit illis : Dormite jam, et requiescite : ecce appropinquavit hora, et Filius hominis tradetur in manus peccatorum.

τότε ἔρχεται πρὸς τοὺς μαθητὰς καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς: καθεύδετε λοιπὸν καὶ ἀναπαύεσθε. ἰδοὺ ἤγγικεν ἡ ὥρα καὶ ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου παραδίδοται εἰς χεῖρας ἁμαρτωλῶν.

Rise: let us go. Behold he is at hand that will betray me.

Surgite, eamus : ecce appropinquavit qui me tradet.

ἐγείρεσθε, ἄγωμεν: ἰδοὺ ἤγγικεν ὁ παραδιδούς με.

As he yet spoke, behold Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the ancients of the people.

Adhuc eo loquente, ecce Judas unus de duodecim venit, et cum eo turba multa cum gladiis et fustibus, missi a principibus sacerdotum, et senioribus populi.

Καὶ ἔτι αὐτοῦ λαλοῦντος ἰδοὺ Ἰούδας εἷς τῶν δώδεκα ἦλθεν καὶ μετ' αὐτοῦ ὄχλος πολὺς μετὰ μαχαιρῶν καὶ ξύλων ἀπὸ τῶν ἀρχιερέων καὶ πρεσβυτέρων τοῦ λαοῦ.

And he that betrayed him gave them a sign, saying: Whomsoever I shall kiss, that is he. Hold him fast.

Qui autem tradidit eum, dedit illis signum, dicens : Quemcumque osculatus fuero, ipse est, tenete eum.

ὁ δὲ παραδιδοὺς αὐτὸν ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς σημεῖον λέγων: ὃν ἂν φιλήσω αὐτός ἐστιν: κρατήσατε αὐτόν.

And forthwith coming to Jesus, he said: Hail, Rabbi. And he kissed him.

Et confestim accedens ad Jesum, dixit : Ave Rabbi. Et osculatus est eum.

καὶ εὐθέως προσελθὼν τῷ Ἰησοῦ εἶπεν: χαῖρε, ῥαββί: καὶ κατεφίλησεν αὐτόν.

And Jesus said to him: Friend, whereto art thou come? Then they came up and laid hands on Jesus and held him.

Dixitque illi Jesus : Amice, ad quid venisti? Tunc accesserunt, et manus injecerunt in Jesum, et tenuerunt eum.

ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτῷ, ἑταῖρε, ἐφ' ὃ πάρει. τότε προσελθόντες ἐπέβαλον τὰς χεῖρας ἐπὶ τὸν Ἰησοῦν καὶ ἐκράτησαν αὐτόν.

And behold one of them that were with Jesus, stretching forth his hand, drew out his sword: and striking the servant of the high priest, cut off his ear.

Et ecce unus ex his qui erant cum Jesu, extendens manum, exemit gladium suum, et percutiens servum principis sacerdotum amputavit auriculam ejus.

καὶ ἰδοὺ εἷς τῶν μετὰ Ἰησοῦ ἐκτείνας τὴν χεῖρα ἀπέσπασεν τὴν μάχαιραν αὐτοῦ καὶ πατάξας τὸν δοῦλον τοῦ ἀρχιερέως ἀφεῖλεν αὐτοῦ τὸ ὠτίον.

Then Jesus saith to him: Put up again thy sword into its place: for all that take the sword shall perish with the sword.

Tunc ait illi Jesus : Converte gladium tuum in locum suum : omnes enim, qui acceperint gladium, gladio peribunt.

τότε λέγει αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς: ἀπόστρεψον τὴν μάχαιράν σου εἰς τὸν τόπον αὐτῆς: πάντες γὰρ οἱ λαβόντες μάχαιραν ἐν μαχαίρῃ ἀπολοῦνται.

Thinkest thou that I cannot ask my Father, and he will give me presently more than twelve legions of angels?

An putas, quia non possum rogare patrem meum, et exhibebit mihi modo plusquam duodecim legiones angelorum?

ἢ δοκεῖς ὅτι οὐ δύναμαι παρακαλέσαι τὸν πατέρα μου, καὶ παραστήσει μοι ἄρτι πλείω δώδεκα λεγιῶνας ἀγγέλων;

How then shall the scriptures be fulfilled, that so it must be done?

Quomodo ergo implebuntur Scripturæ, quia sic oportet fieri?

πῶς οὖν πληρωθῶσιν αἱ γραφαὶ, ὅτι οὕτως δεῖ γενέσθαι;

In that same hour, Jesus said to the multitudes: You are come out, as it were to a robber, with swords and clubs to apprehend me. I sat daily with you, teaching in the temple: and you laid not hands on me.

In illa hora dixit Jesus turbis : Tamquam ad latronem existis cum gladiis et fustibus comprehendere me : quotidie apud vos sedebam docens in templo, et non me tenuistis.

ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ὥρᾳ εἶπεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς τοῖς ὄχλοις: ὡς ἐπὶ λῃστὴν ἐξήλθατε μετὰ μαχαιρῶν καὶ ξύλων συλλαβεῖν με: καθ' ἡμέραν ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ ἐκαθεζόμην διδάσκων καὶ οὐκ ἐκρατήσατέ με.

Now all this was done that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then the disciples, all leaving him, fled.

Hoc autem totum factum est, ut adimplerentur Scripturæ prophetarum. Tunc discipuli omnes, relicto eo, fugerunt.

τοῦτο δὲ ὅλον γέγονεν ἵνα πληρωθῶσιν αἱ γραφαὶ τῶν προφητῶν. τότε οἱ μαθηταὶ πάντες ἀφέντες αὐτὸν ἔφυγον.

But they holding Jesus led him to Caiphas the high priest, where the scribes and the ancients were assembled.

At illi tenentes Jesum, duxerunt ad Caipham principem sacerdotum, ubi scribæ et seniores convenerant.

Οἱ δὲ κρατήσαντες τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἀπήγαγον πρὸς Καϊάφαν τὸν ἀρχιερέα, ὅπου οἱ γραμματεῖς καὶ οἱ πρεσβύτεροι συνήχθησαν.

And Peter followed him afar off, even to the court of the high priest, And going in, he sat with the servants, that he might see the end.

Petrus autem sequebatur eum a longe, usque in atrium principis sacerdotum. Et ingressus intro, sedebat cum ministris, ut videret finem.

ὁ δὲ Πέτρος ἠκολούθει αὐτῷ [ἀπὸ] μακρόθεν ἕως τῆς αὐλῆς τοῦ ἀρχιερέως, καὶ εἰσελθὼν ἔσω ἐκάθητο μετὰ τῶν ὑπηρετῶν ἰδεῖν τὸ τέλος.

And the chief priests and the whole council sought false witness against Jesus, that they might put him to death.

Principes autem sacerdotum, et omne concilium, quærebant falsum testimonium contra Jesum, ut eum morti traderent:

οἱ δὲ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ τὸ συνέδριον ὅλον ἐζήτουν ψευδομαρτυρίαν κατὰ τοῦ Ἰησοῦ, ὅπως αὐτὸν θανατώσωσιν,

And they found not, whereas many false witnesses had come in. And last of all there came two false witnesses:

et non invenerunt, cum multi falsi testes accessissent. Novissime autem venerunt duo falsi testes,

καὶ οὐχ εὗρον πολλῶν προσελθόντων ψευδομαρτύρων. ὕστερον δὲ προσελθόντες δύο

And they said: This man said, I am able to destroy the temple of God and after three days to rebuild it.

et dixerunt : Hic dixit : Possum destruere templum Dei, et post triduum reædificare illud.

εἶπαν: οὗτος ἔφη: δύναμαι καταλῦσαι τὸν ναὸν τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ διὰ τριῶν ἡμερῶν οἰκοδομῆσαι.

And the high priest rising up, said to him: Answerest thou nothing to the things which these witness against thee?

Et surgens princeps sacerdotum, ait illi : Nihil respondes ad ea, quæ isti adversum te testificantur?

καὶ ἀναστὰς ὁ ἀρχιερεὺς εἶπεν αὐτῷ: οὐδὲν ἀποκρίνῃ; τί οὗτοί σου καταμαρτυροῦσιν;

But Jesus held his peace. And the high priest said to him: I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us if thou be the Christ the Son of God.

Jesus autem tacebat. Et princeps sacerdotum ait illi : Adjuro te per Deum vivum, ut dicas nobis si tu es Christus Filius Dei.

ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἐσιώπα. καὶ ὁ ἀρχιερεὺς εἶπεν αὐτῷ: ἐξορκίζω σε κατὰ τοῦ θεοῦ τοῦ ζῶντος, ἵνα ἡμῖν εἴπῃς εἰ σὺ εἶ ὁ Χριστὸς ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ θεοῦ.

Jesus saith to him: Thou hast said it. Nevertheless I say to you, hereafter you shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of the power of God and coming in the clouds of heaven.

Dicit illi Jesus : Tu dixisti. Verumtamen dico vobis, amodo videbitis Filium hominis sedentem a dextris virtutis Dei, et venientem in nubibus cæli.

λέγει αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς: σὺ εἶπας: πλὴν λέγω ὑμῖν, ἀπ' ἄρτι ὄψεσθε τὸν υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου καθήμενον ἐκ δεξιῶν τῆς δυνάμεως καὶ ἐρχόμενον ἐπὶ τῶν νεφελῶν τοῦ οὐρανοῦ.

Then the high priest rent his garments, saying: He hath blasphemed: what further need have we of witnesses? Behold, now you have heard the blasphemy.

Tunc princeps sacerdotum scidit vestimenta sua, dicens : Blasphemavit : quid adhuc egemus testibus? ecce nunc audistis blasphemiam:

τότε ὁ ἀρχιερεὺς διέρρηξεν τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ λέγων: ἐβλασφήμησεν: τί ἔτι χρείαν ἔχομεν μαρτύρων; ἴδε νῦν ἠκούσατε τὴν βλασφημίαν.

What think you? But they answering, said: He is guilty of death.

quid vobis videtur? At illi respondentes dixerunt : Reus est mortis.

τί ὑμῖν δοκεῖ; οἱ δὲ ἀποκριθέντες εἶπαν: ἔνοχος θανάτου ἐστίν.

Then did they spit in his face and buffeted him. And others struck his face with the palms of their hands,

Tunc exspuerunt in faciem ejus, et colaphis eum ceciderunt, alii autem palmas in faciem ejus dederunt,

Τότε ἐνέπτυσαν εἰς τὸ πρόσωπον αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐκολάφισαν αὐτόν, οἱ δὲ ἐράπισαν

Saying: Prophesy unto us, O Christ. Who is he that struck thee?

dicentes : Prophetiza nobis Christe, quis est qui te percussit?

λέγοντες: προφήτευσον ἡμῖν, Χριστέ, τίς ἐστιν ὁ παίσας σε;

But Peter sat without in the court. And there came to him a servant maid, saying: Thou also wast with Jesus the Galilean.

Petrus vero sedebat foris in atrio : et accessit ad eum una ancilla, dicens : Et tu cum Jesu Galilæo eras.

Ὁ δὲ Πέτρος ἐκάθητο ἔξω ἐν τῇ αὐλῇ: καὶ προσῆλθεν αὐτῷ μία παιδίσκη λέγουσα: καὶ σὺ ἦσθα μετὰ Ἰησοῦ τοῦ Γαλιλαίου.

But he denied before them all, saying: I know not what thou sayest.

At ille negavit coram omnibus, dicens : Nescio quid dicis.

ὁ δὲ ἠρνήσατο ἔμπροσθεν πάντων λέγων: οὐκ οἶδα τί λέγεις.

And as he went out of the gate, another maid saw him; and she saith to them that were there: This man also was with Jesus of Nazareth.

Exeunte autem illo januam, vidit eum alia ancilla, et ait his qui erant ibi : Et hic erat cum Jesu Nazareno.

ἐξελθόντα δὲ εἰς τὸν πυλῶνα, εἶδεν αὐτὸν ἄλλη καὶ λέγει τοῖς ἐκεῖ: οὗτος ἦν μετὰ Ἰησοῦ τοῦ Ναζωραίου.

And again he denied with an oath: I know not the man.

Et iterum negavit cum juramento : Quia non novi hominem.

καὶ πάλιν ἠρνήσατο μετὰ ὅρκου ὅτι οὐκ οἶδα τὸν ἄνθρωπον.

And after a little while, they came that stood by and said to Peter: Surely thou also art one of them. For even thy speech doth discover thee.

Et post pusillum accesserunt qui stabant, et dixerunt Petro : Vere et tu ex illis es : nam et loquela tua manifestum te facit.

μετὰ μικρὸν δὲ προσελθόντες οἱ ἑστῶτες εἶπον τῷ Πέτρῳ, ἀληθῶς καὶ σὺ ἐξ αὐτῶν εἶ: καὶ γὰρ ἡ λαλιά σου δῆλόν σε ποιεῖ.

Then he began to curse and to swear that he knew not the man. And immediately the cock crew.

Tunc cœpit detestari et jurare quia non novisset hominem. Et continuo gallus cantavit.

τότε ἤρξατο καταθεματίζειν καὶ ὀμνύειν ὅτι οὐκ οἶδα τὸν ἄνθρωπον: καὶ εὐθέως ἀλέκτωρ ἐφώνησεν.

And Peter remembered the word of Jesus which he had said: Before the cock crow, thou wilt deny me thrice. And going forth, he wept bitterly.

Et recordatus est Petrus verbi Jesu, quod dixerat : Priusquam gallus cantet, ter me negabis. Et egressus foras, flevit amare.

καὶ ἐμνήσθη ὁ Πέτρος τοῦ ῥήματος Ἰησοῦ εἰρηκότος ὅτι πρὶν ἀλέκτορα φωνῆσαι τρὶς ἀπαρνήσῃ με: καὶ ἐξελθὼν ἔξω ἔκλαυσεν πικρῶς.
