Spiritual Growth
Maturing in grace, faith, hope, charity, and trust in God.
What Is Spiritual Growth?
Spiritual growth is the gradual transformation of the soul by God’s grace. It is the process of becoming more faithful, more prayerful, more virtuous, and more conformed to Jesus Christ.
This growth does not happen by human effort alone. God gives grace, and we respond by prayer, repentance, obedience, sacrifice, and perseverance.
Sacred Scripture teaches, “Grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.” — 2 Peter 3:18
How Does the Soul Grow?
The soul grows as it remains united to Christ and cooperates with His grace. Like a living branch must remain attached to the vine, the Christian must remain close to Jesus through prayer, the Sacraments, and a life of charity.
- Grace strengthens the soul.
- Prayer deepens friendship with God.
- Confession heals and restores the soul.
- The Holy Eucharist nourishes divine life within us.
- Virtue forms holy habits.
- Trials teach patience, humility, and trust.

Spiritual growth is not measured only by feelings or religious excitement. Often, true growth is quiet and hidden.

- More sorrow for sin and quicker repentance.
- Greater patience with others.
- More trust in God during trials.
- Less attachment to sinful habits.
- More charity toward family, neighbors, and enemies.
