Judgment
Standing Before God in Truth, Justice, and Mercy
What Is Judgment?
Judgment is the moment when every person stands before God and the truth of their life is revealed.
God’s judgment is perfectly just, perfectly true, and perfectly merciful.
The Church teaches both Particular Judgment after death and Final Judgment at the end of time.
“It is appointed unto men once to die, and after this the judgment.” — Hebrews 9:27
Particular Judgment
Particular Judgment happens immediately after death.
At that moment, each soul receives its eternal destiny according to its response to God’s grace.
The soul will enter Heaven, undergo purification in Purgatory, or experience eternal separation from God.
Final Judgment
Final Judgment will occur at the end of time when Jesus Christ returns in glory.
At that time, the truth of every life and all of history will be revealed.
God’s justice, mercy, wisdom, and providence will be fully shown before all creation.
“And he shall come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead.” — Nicene Creed
Jesus Christ Is the Judge
The Father has entrusted judgment to the Son.
Jesus Christ, who came as Savior, will also judge the living and the dead.
His judgment is not arbitrary. It is the judgment of divine truth and love.
“For the Father judgeth no man, but hath given all judgment to the Son.” — John 5:22
Judgment and Mercy
God’s judgment should not be separated from His mercy.
God desires all people to repent, be saved, and come to the knowledge of truth.
While we live, God continually calls us to conversion, Confession, forgiveness, and grace.
Judgment and Our Choices
Our choices matter.
Faith, love, repentance, mercy, obedience, and charity are not meaningless.
Jesus teaches that we will be judged by our response to God’s grace and by how we loved Him and our neighbor.
“As long as you did it to one of these my least brethren, you did it to me.” — Matthew 25:40
Nothing Hidden Will Remain Hidden
At the Final Judgment, the truth of every human life will be revealed.
Hidden acts of love, secret sins, suffering endured patiently, and injustices committed or suffered will all be seen in the light of God’s truth.
This gives hope because God sees everything rightly.
Judgment and Hope
The teaching on judgment is not meant to lead faithful Christians into despair.
It reminds us to live seriously, repent sincerely, love generously, and trust God completely.
Those who belong to Christ can face judgment with hope because Jesus is both Judge and Savior.
