Last Things
Death, Judgment, Heaven, Hell, and the Hope of Resurrection
What Are the Last Things?
The Last Things are the Church’s teachings about what happens at the end of earthly life and at the fulfillment of history.
They include death, judgment, Heaven, Hell, Purgatory, the Second Coming of Christ, and the resurrection of the body.
These teachings remind us that life has eternal meaning and that every person is called to eternal life with God.
“It is appointed unto men once to die, and after this the judgment.” — Hebrews 9:27
Why the Last Things Matter
The Last Things help us live with wisdom, hope, and responsibility.
They remind us that death is not the end, that our choices matter, and that Jesus Christ has conquered sin and death.
Christians look toward eternity not with despair, but with faith in God’s mercy and justice.
Death Is Not the End
Christianity teaches that human beings are created for eternal life.
Death entered the world through sin, but Christ has transformed death by His Resurrection.
For those who die in God’s friendship, death becomes a passage toward life with Him.
Judgment
Each person will face judgment before God.
The Church teaches both particular judgment after death and final judgment at the end of time.
God’s judgment is perfectly just, perfectly true, and perfectly merciful.
Heaven
Heaven is eternal life with God.
It is perfect communion with the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, together with the angels and saints.
Heaven is the fulfillment of every true desire of the human heart.
Hell
Hell is eternal separation from God freely chosen through final rejection of His grace.
The Church teaches Hell because Jesus Himself warned about it.
God desires all to be saved, but He does not force anyone to love Him.
Purgatory
Purgatory is the final purification of those who die in God’s friendship but still need to be cleansed before entering Heaven.
Purgatory is not a second chance after death.
It is God’s mercy preparing the soul for the fullness of heavenly glory.
The Second Coming
Catholics believe that Jesus Christ will come again in glory.
At His return, He will judge the living and the dead, defeat evil completely, and bring God’s plan to fulfillment.
Resurrection of the Body
Christians do not believe only in the immortality of the soul.
We also believe that the body will rise.
At the end of time, the dead will be raised, and the faithful will share in the glory of Christ’s Resurrection.
