Sub Tuum Praesidium

One of the Church's oldest surviving prayers asking the Mother of God for intercession

Start Here

Short enough for daily use, the Sub Tuum Praesidium witnesses to the early Christian instinct to seek Mary’s prayers in danger and need.

The Prayer

We fly to thy protection, O holy Mother of God. Despise not our petitions in our necessities, but deliver us always from all dangers, O glorious and blessed Virgin. Amen.

Important Catholic Boundary

The prayer asks Mary to assist through her intercession. Divine power belongs to God alone, and every authentic Marian devotion draws the disciple more deeply into faith and obedience to Christ.

A Short Prayer for Real Need

Its brevity makes this prayer useful when a person is anxious, traveling, facing conflict, or unable to sustain longer prayer. It can also conclude family intercessions.

To fly to Mary’s protection is to bring need into the communion of saints instead of carrying it in isolation.

Keeping Marian Devotion Christ-Centered

  • Read Mary’s life through Scripture.
  • Imitate her faith, humility, listening, and obedience.
  • Let every Marian prayer increase love for Jesus and participation in the Church’s worship.
  • Avoid claims or practices that treat devotion as magic or as a substitute for conversion.

A Catholic Practice Plan

Memorize this prayer and use it when a sudden need arises, followed by a calm act of trust in God.
