Lust is one of the most destructive sins against purity. It has led countless souls away from God because it distorts His beautiful gift of human sexuality into an object of selfish pleasure. Scripture repeatedly warns us to guard both our hearts and our eyes.
Sadly, it has become increasingly common to see immodest clothing even at Holy Mass. Sleeveless tops, very short dresses, skin-tight clothing, and other revealing attire can distract from the sacred worship of God. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is where we come to adore Christ truly present in the Most Holy Eucharist—not to draw attention to ourselves.
Both men and women have a responsibility to dress modestly. Modesty is not merely about clothing; it is a virtue that protects human dignity, encourages purity, and shows reverence for God and respect for our neighbor. We should never intentionally dress or behave in a way that tempts others to sin or becomes a source of unnecessary distraction during worship.
The Sin of Lust
Lust is the disordered desire for sexual pleasure outside God’s plan for marriage between one man and one woman. It turns a sacred gift into selfish gratification and separates sexuality from its God-given purpose of love, unity, and openness to life.
“But I say to you, that whosoever shall look on a woman to lust after her, hath already committed adultery with her in his heart.”

St. Paul likewise warns that those who knowingly persist in grave sexual sin without repentance place their souls in danger:
“Know you not that the unjust shall not possess the kingdom of God? Do not err: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor the effeminate, nor liers with mankind, nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor railers, nor extortioners, shall possess the kingdom of God.”

- Adultery
- Fornication
- Pornography
- Masturbation
- Contraception
- Sodomy
- Homosexual acts
- Lustful thoughts
- Immodest dress or behavior that intentionally incites lust
- Obsession with sexual pleasure
Through sincere repentance, frequent Confession, prayer, the reception of the Holy Eucharist, and the grace of God, the vice of lust can be overcome, and the beautiful virtue of chastity can be embraced.
