Gifts of the Holy Spirit
God’s Help for Living the Christian Life
Gifts of the Holy Spirit
The Gifts of the Holy Spirit are special helps given by God to strengthen us, guide us, and help us live as faithful disciples of Jesus Christ.
These gifts help us respond more readily to God’s grace and grow in holiness.
“And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him: the spirit of wisdom, and of understanding, the spirit of counsel, and of fortitude, the spirit of knowledge, and of godliness.” — Isaiah 11:2
What Are the Gifts of the Holy Spirit?
The Church traditionally names seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit:
- Wisdom
- Understanding
- Counsel
- Fortitude
- Knowledge
- Piety
- Fear of the Lord
These gifts are not merely natural talents. They are spiritual gifts that help us follow God more faithfully.
Why Did God Give These Gifts?
God gives these gifts because the Christian life cannot be lived by human strength alone.
We need grace to know what is true, choose what is good, resist temptation, and persevere in faith.
The Gifts of the Holy Spirit help us become more open to God’s guidance and more faithful to His will.
Wisdom
Wisdom helps us see all things in light of God.
It teaches us to love what is eternal more than what is passing and to judge life according to God’s truth.
Wisdom helps us desire Heaven and live for God above all things.
Understanding
Understanding helps us grasp the truths of the faith more deeply.
It does not mean we fully comprehend every mystery of God, but it helps us penetrate more deeply into what God has revealed.
This gift helps us receive Catholic teaching with greater clarity and faith.
Counsel
Counsel helps us make good decisions according to God’s will.
It guides us in moments of uncertainty, temptation, and moral difficulty.
Through counsel, the Holy Spirit helps us choose what leads to holiness.
Fortitude
Fortitude gives us courage and strength to do what is right.
It helps us remain faithful during suffering, opposition, fear, and difficulty.
Fortitude strengthens Christians to bear witness to Christ even when it is hard.
Knowledge
Knowledge helps us see creation and human life according to God’s truth.
It helps us recognize that created things are good, but they are not God.
This gift helps us use the things of this world rightly and avoid making idols of them.
Piety
Piety helps us love God as Father and live as His children.
It strengthens our prayer, reverence, gratitude, and love for God.
Piety also helps us love others as members of God’s family.
Fear of the Lord
Fear of the Lord does not mean being terrified of God.
It means having reverence for God and a holy desire not to offend Him.
This gift helps us recognize God’s greatness, hate sin, and remain humble before Him.
The Gifts and Confirmation
The Gifts of the Holy Spirit are especially associated with the sacrament of Confirmation.
In Confirmation, the Holy Spirit strengthens the baptized and equips them to witness to Christ and live the faith more fully.
These gifts are not meant to remain hidden. They are meant to shape our daily Christian life.
