Fruits of the Holy Spirit

The Signs of Grace Growing in the Christian Life

Fruits of the Holy Spirit

The Fruits of the Holy Spirit are signs that God’s grace is alive and growing in a person.

When we cooperate with the Holy Spirit, our lives begin to show charity, peace, patience, purity, and holiness.

“But the fruit of the Spirit is, charity, joy, peace, patience, benignity, goodness, longanimity, mildness, faith, modesty, continency, chastity.” — Galatians 5:22-23

What Are the Fruits of the Holy Spirit?

The Church traditionally names twelve Fruits of the Holy Spirit:

  • Charity
  • Joy
  • Peace
  • Patience
  • Benignity
  • Goodness
  • Longanimity
  • Mildness
  • Faith
  • Modesty
  • Continency
  • Chastity

These fruits are not produced by human effort alone. They grow in us when we live by grace and cooperate with the Holy Spirit.

Gifts and Fruits: What Is the Difference?

The Gifts of the Holy Spirit are helps given by God to strengthen and guide us.

The Fruits of the Holy Spirit are the visible results of grace growing in our lives.

Put simply: gifts are what God gives; fruits are what grow when we cooperate with Him.

Charity

Charity is the love of God above all things and love of neighbor for God’s sake.

It is the greatest of the virtues and the heart of Christian life.

Joy

Joy is spiritual gladness rooted in God.

Christian joy is deeper than passing happiness because it rests in God’s love and promises.

Peace

Peace is the calm and order that come from being reconciled with God.

This peace does not mean life is free from suffering, but that the soul rests in God’s grace.

Patience

Patience helps us endure suffering, delay, and difficulty without losing trust in God.

It helps us remain faithful when life is hard.

Benignity

Benignity means kindness.

It moves us to treat others with gentleness, mercy, and goodwill.

Goodness

Goodness is a steady desire to do what is right and pleasing to God.

It helps us seek the good of others and act with integrity.

Longanimity

Longanimity means persevering patience.

It helps us remain faithful over a long period of time, especially when results are slow or suffering continues.

Mildness

Mildness means gentleness of heart.

It helps us avoid harshness, anger, and unnecessary severity in how we treat others.

Faith

Faith, as a fruit, means faithfulness and trust in God.

It shows itself in loyalty, perseverance, and confidence in God’s promises.

Modesty

Modesty helps us live with humility, dignity, and respect for ourselves and others.

It shapes how we speak, act, dress, and present ourselves before God and neighbor.

Continency

Continency means self-control, especially over disordered desires.

It helps us choose what is good rather than being ruled by impulse or passion.

Chastity

Chastity is the proper ordering of love according to one’s state in life.

It helps us love with purity, respect, and self-giving charity.

Living by the Spirit

The Fruits of the Holy Spirit grow when we remain close to God.

Prayer, the sacraments, Scripture, repentance, and daily acts of charity all help us cooperate with the Holy Spirit.

A life led by the Spirit becomes more Christlike over time.
