Creation

God Created Heaven and Earth

Creation

Christians believe that God is the Creator of all things.

Everything that exists ultimately comes from God. He created the heavens, the earth, the visible world, and the invisible world.

Creation is not an accident. It exists because God freely chose to create.

“In the beginning God created heaven, and earth.” — Genesis 1:1

In the Beginning

The Bible begins with the story of creation in Genesis.

Scripture teaches that before anything existed, God existed.

God did not create because He needed anything. He created freely out of His wisdom, goodness, and love.

Everything that exists depends upon God for its existence.

God Created Everything

Catholics believe that God created all things visible and invisible.

This includes the universe, stars, planets, animals, human beings, and the angels.

Nothing exists apart from God’s creative power.

“All things were made by him: and without him was made nothing that was made.” — John 1:3

Why Did God Create?

God did not create because He was lonely or incomplete.

God is perfect and lacks nothing.

He created so that His goodness, truth, beauty, and love could be shared with creatures.

Creation is a gift flowing from God’s generosity.

Creation Is Good

After each stage of creation, Scripture tells us that God saw that it was good.

The created world reflects God’s wisdom and goodness.

Although creation has been affected by sin, it remains fundamentally good because it comes from God.

“And God saw all the things that he had made, and they were very good.” — Genesis 1:31

Humanity Has Special Dignity

Human beings hold a unique place within creation.

Unlike any other earthly creature, men and women are made in the image and likeness of God.

Every human life possesses inherent dignity and worth.

This dignity does not depend upon age, abilities, wealth, health, or social status.

“And he created man to his own image.” — Genesis 1:27

Creation Reveals God

Creation points beyond itself to its Creator.

The beauty, order, and design found in nature help us recognize God’s existence and power.

While creation does not reveal everything about God, it helps lead us toward Him.

“For the invisible things of him, from the creation of the world, are clearly seen.” — Romans 1:20

Faith and Science

Catholics believe that faith and science are complementary, not enemies.

Science studies how the natural world works. Faith helps answer deeper questions about meaning, purpose, and why anything exists at all.

Because God is the author of both faith and reason, genuine scientific discoveries can never ultimately contradict the truth.

Throughout history, many important scientists were Christians, including Catholics.

Stewardship of Creation

God entrusted creation to humanity.

We are called to use creation wisely, care for the environment, respect life, and use the gifts God has given us responsibly.

Stewardship means caring for God’s creation while recognizing that it ultimately belongs to Him.
