Make the case

Define the claim accurately, state the strongest fair objection, and use the evidence without shortcuts.

The Catholic position

A claimant to public prophetic authority must be tested by truth, moral fruit, fulfilled revelation, and continuity with the definitive revelation of Christ.

The argument

Use primary documents, distinguish first-hand from later accounts, and evaluate one claim at a time. Neither scandal alone nor subjective warmth settles whether a claimed revelation is from God.

The opposing position

Latter-day Saints receive Joseph Smith as the prophet through whom Christ restored the gospel, priesthood, scripture, and Church.

What would decide the issue?

Agree on definitions, read the full source in context, and identify what evidence could count against either interpretation. A claim protected from every possible test has not yet been demonstrated.

The evidence stack

Start with the canonical text, then compare Catholic doctrine, official organizational teaching, and history.

Sacred Scripture

Deuteronomy 13:1–5; 18:20–22; Matthew 7:15–20; 1 John 4:1–3 — Douay-Rheims

Catholic doctrine

Historical test

Use dated primary documents, manuscript evidence, and contemporaneous witnesses where the claim is historical.

Use it in a real conversation

One claim. One distinction. One strong anchor.

1Ask

“What does your church officially mean by that term, and where is its clearest source?”

2Clarify

State the Catholic claim in one sentence before comparing proof texts.

Questions people actually ask

Each answer carries direct source anchors.

How should Joseph Smith’s First Vision accounts be evaluated?

Read the primary accounts in date and context, note both common elements and differences, and ask what the variations mean. Avoid pretending either that all differences are fatal or that no difference can matter.

Sources: Deuteronomy 18:20–22; 1 John 4:1; LDS Joseph Smith Papers.

Does later prophetic development excuse contradiction?

Authentic development can deepen understanding without reversing the identity of God or the substance of prior revelation. A claimed development must show continuity, not merely invoke continuing revelation when evidence conflicts.

Sources: John 16:13; Galatians 1:8–9; Dei Verbum 8.

Is a prophet’s moral failure enough to disprove every claim?

Sin alone does not logically refute every statement, since biblical leaders also sinned. But conduct, honesty, use of power, and prophetic fruit are relevant evidence and must be investigated truthfully.

Sources: Matthew 7:15–20; 1 Timothy 3:1–13 — Douay-Rheims.

Sources & deeper study

Current official organizational material is separated from Catholic and biblical sources.

Ecumenical Council

Sacred Scripture

  • Douay-Rheims Bible: passages are identified at claim level throughout each guide.

Academic Scholarship

  • Read disputed verses in their whole chapter and canonical context.

Historical Secondary Source

  • Anthony A. Hoekema, The Four Major Cults (1963)—used as an older topic map, not as authority for current organizational teaching.
  • Scientology is researched separately; it is not covered by Hoekema’s book and must not be confused with Christian Science.

Reflect

A Catholic argument is strongest when the other person can recognize their real position in our description and still see clearly why we disagree.

Pray

Lord Jesus Christ, keep us faithful to truth, free from contempt, patient in listening, and courageous in witness. Draw every heart into the fullness of Your life. Amen.
