The argument
A total apostasy claim must account for Christ’s promises, apostolic succession, sacramental continuity, conciliar history, and the absence of evidence that the entire Church knowingly vanished. Corruption can require reform without requiring refoundation.
The opposing position
LDS teaching holds that priesthood authority and gospel fullness were lost after the apostles and restored through heavenly messengers.

Did the Church completely disappear after the apostles?
Historical Christianity experienced persecution, doctrinal conflict, scandal, and reform, yet maintained Scripture, baptism, Eucharist, episcopal ministry, creeds, and continuous communities. Christ promised abiding presence, not a centuries-long universal extinction.

Does corruption prove a total apostasy?
No. Biblical Israel and the apostolic churches could be gravely sinful without ceasing to be God’s covenant people. Corruption proves the need for repentance and reform, not necessarily the loss of every sacrament and office.

What evidence supports apostolic succession?
The New Testament shows offices transmitted through laying on of hands and qualified successors; first- and second-century writers describe bishops and presbyters guarding apostolic teaching. This is visible continuity, not a medieval invention.
