Make the case

Define the claim accurately, state the strongest fair objection, and use the evidence without shortcuts.

The Catholic position

The human person is a unity of body and spiritual soul; death separates them temporarily, and God raises the body at the last day.

The argument

Distinguish biblical language about death as sleep from nonexistence. Christ speaks of personal continuity beyond bodily death, while Christian hope remains bodily resurrection rather than an escape from matter.

The opposing position

Witnesses teach that the dead are unconscious and no longer exist as living souls; they reject eternal conscious torment and expect resurrection by God’s memory and power.

What would decide the issue?

Agree on definitions, read the full source in context, and identify what evidence could count against either interpretation. A claim protected from every possible test has not yet been demonstrated.

The evidence stack

Start with the canonical text, then compare Catholic doctrine, official organizational teaching, and history.

Questions people actually ask

Each answer carries direct source anchors.

Does a person cease to exist at death?

Bodily death is real, but it does not annihilate the spiritual soul. Scripture depicts personal communion with Christ after death while awaiting the resurrection of the body.

Sources: Matthew 10:28; Luke 23:43; Philippians 1:23; Revelation 6:9–11 — Douay-Rheims; CCC 1005–1014.

Is hell merely annihilation?

Biblical judgment texts use varied imagery, but Catholic doctrine affirms the real and everlasting consequence of freely refusing communion with God. The Church does not delight in damnation and prays and works for every person’s salvation.

Sources: Matthew 25:31–46; Mark 9:42–48 — Douay-Rheims; CCC 1033–1037.

Is resurrection just God recreating a copy?

Christian resurrection concerns the same human person and the body transformed by God, not a replacement copy. Personal identity persists through death by the spiritual soul and is completed in bodily resurrection.

Sources: John 5:28–29; 1 Corinthians 15 — Douay-Rheims; CCC 997–1004.

Sources & deeper study

Current official organizational material is separated from Catholic and biblical sources.

Sacred Scripture

  • Douay-Rheims Bible: passages are identified at claim level throughout each guide.

Academic Scholarship

  • Read disputed verses in their whole chapter and canonical context.

Historical Secondary Source

  • Anthony A. Hoekema, The Four Major Cults (1963)—used as an older topic map, not as authority for current organizational teaching.
  • Scientology is researched separately; it is not covered by Hoekema’s book and must not be confused with Christian Science.

Reflect

A Catholic argument is strongest when the other person can recognize their real position in our description and still see clearly why we disagree.

Pray

Lord Jesus Christ, keep us faithful to truth, free from contempt, patient in listening, and courageous in witness. Draw every heart into the fullness of Your life. Amen.
