Why Catholics Ask Saints to Pray for Us
Intercession, the Communion of Saints, and Christ Our Savior
Why Ask Saints to Pray for Us?
Catholics ask the saints to pray for us because the saints are alive in Christ and united with us in the Communion of Saints.
Just as Christians on earth ask one another for prayer, Catholics ask the saints in Heaven to intercede for us before God.
This does not replace Jesus Christ. All prayer and intercession depend entirely on Him.
“Pray one for another, that you may be saved.” — James 5:16
The Saints Are Alive in Christ
The saints in Heaven are not dead in the sense of being separated from God.
They are fully alive in Christ and united to Him in glory.
Because they love God perfectly, they also love His people and pray for the Church.
The Communion of Saints
The Church is one Body in Christ.
This includes Christians on earth, the souls being purified, and the saints in Heaven.
Death does not destroy the unity of Christ’s Body.
Because we remain united in Christ, the saints can pray for us.
Is This Biblical?
Scripture teaches that the prayers of the righteous are powerful.
“The continual prayer of a just man availeth much.” — James 5:16
Scripture also shows heavenly beings presenting prayers before God.
“The four and twenty ancients fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of saints.” — Revelation 5:8
Jesus Is the One Mediator
Catholics believe Jesus Christ is the one Savior and Mediator between God and man.
Asking the saints to pray for us does not compete with Christ’s mediation.
The saints intercede only because they are united to Christ and share in His life.
Their prayers depend completely on Him.
“For there is one God, and one mediator of God and men, the man Christ Jesus.” — 1 Timothy 2:5
Prayer vs. Worship
Catholics worship God alone.
When Catholics “pray to” saints, the word pray means to ask or request.
Catholics are not adoring the saints.
They are asking members of Christ’s heavenly family to pray with them and for them.
Why Not Go Directly to God?
Catholics do go directly to God.
Catholics also ask others to pray for them.
Asking Mary or the saints for prayer is not an alternative to praying to God.
It is asking fellow members of Christ’s Body to join us in prayer.
Common Misunderstandings
Catholics Do Not Worship Saints
Worship belongs to God alone.
Saints Do Not Replace Jesus
Jesus is the one Savior and Mediator. The saints pray through Him, not apart from Him.
The Saints Are Not Magical
Asking saints for prayer is not superstition. It is intercessory prayer within the Body of Christ.
Catholics Still Pray Directly to God
Devotion to the saints should always deepen trust in God and love for Jesus Christ.
