Theological Virtues

Faith, Hope, and Charity

What Are the Theological Virtues?

The theological virtues are gifts from God that unite us directly to Him.

They are called theological because they have God as their origin, motive, and goal.

These virtues are infused by God into the soul and help us live as His children.

The three theological virtues are faith, hope, and charity.

Faith

Faith is the virtue by which we believe in God and all that He has revealed.

Faith is not blind guessing. It is trust in God, who can neither deceive nor be deceived.

Through faith, we accept God’s truth and begin to live as disciples of Jesus Christ.

“But without faith it is impossible to please God.” — Hebrews 11:6

Hope

Hope is the virtue by which we trust in God’s promises and desire eternal life with Him.

Hope keeps us from discouragement and reminds us that God’s grace is stronger than sin, suffering, and death.

Christian hope is not wishful thinking. It is confidence in God’s mercy and faithfulness.

“In thee, O Lord, have I hoped, let me never be confounded.” — Psalm 30:2

Charity

Charity is the greatest of the virtues.

By charity, we love God above all things for His own sake, and we love our neighbor as ourselves for the love of God.

Charity gives life to the Christian moral life and brings all other virtues to perfection.

“And now there remain faith, hope, and charity, these three: but the greatest of these is charity.” — 1 Corinthians 13:13

Why These Virtues Matter

The theological virtues direct us toward God Himself.

Faith helps us believe God.

Hope helps us trust God.

Charity helps us love God.

Without these virtues, the Christian life cannot be lived fully.

How Do We Grow in the Theological Virtues?

The theological virtues are gifts from God, but we are called to cooperate with them.

We grow in faith, hope, and charity through:

  • Prayer.
  • The Sacraments.
  • Reading Sacred Scripture.
  • Obedience to God’s commandments.
  • Acts of love and mercy.
  • Perseverance in trials.

The Greatest Is Charity

Saint Paul teaches that charity is the greatest of the three theological virtues.

Faith will one day give way to sight. Hope will be fulfilled in Heaven.

But charity remains forever, because Heaven is perfect love and communion with God.

Common Misunderstandings

Faith Is Not Mere Opinion

Faith is a supernatural virtue rooted in trust in God’s revelation.

Hope Is Not Optimism Alone

Christian hope is confidence in God’s promises, not simply positive thinking.

Charity Is More Than Being Nice

Charity is self-giving love rooted in God’s own love.

The Theological Virtues Are Gifts

They are not produced by human effort alone. They are given by God and strengthened by grace.
