Litany of Saint Michael

This private litany invokes Saint Michael under titles drawn from his role as servant of God and defender of God’s people. It asks for intercession while directing worship to the Holy Trinity.
The Prayer
Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Christ, hear us. Christ, graciously hear us.
God the Father of heaven, have mercy on us. God the Son, Redeemer of the world, have mercy on us. God the Holy Spirit, have mercy on us. Holy Trinity, one God, have mercy on us.
Holy Mary, Queen of Angels, pray for us.
Saint Michael, servant of the Most High, pray for us. Saint Michael, defender of God’s people, pray for us. Saint Michael, prince of the heavenly host, pray for us. Saint Michael, strong in obedience, pray for us. Saint Michael, herald of divine justice, pray for us. Saint Michael, companion in the spiritual battle, pray for us. Saint Michael, protector of the Church, pray for us. Saint Michael, guide of souls toward the heavenly homeland, pray for us.
Lamb of God, You take away the sins of the world, spare us, O Lord. Lamb of God, You take away the sins of the world, graciously hear us, O Lord. Lamb of God, You take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us.
Pray for us, Saint Michael the Archangel, that we may remain faithful to Christ.
Almighty God, grant that through the intercession of Saint Michael we may resist temptation, serve Your Church with courage, and reach the joy of Your presence. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Important Catholic Boundary
This is a private devotional litany, not a liturgical exorcism. Its petitions ask God for mercy and Saint Michael for intercession; they do not direct commands toward evil spirits.
Praying the Titles
Each title points beyond Michael to God’s order: obedience, service, justice, protection, and the final homeland. Ask for the human virtue that corresponds to each title.
A devotion to angels should make a person more obedient to God and more faithful to ordinary duties, never absorbed in speculation about hidden ranks or messages.
A Family Use
- Assign one person to lead and everyone else to answer ‘pray for us.’
- Add intentions for the Church, the vulnerable, travelers, and those facing temptation.
- Conclude with the Our Father and a practical act of reconciliation.
A Catholic Practice Plan
Pray the litany on the Feast of the Archangels or during a nine-day period of prayer for courage and fidelity.
