Proverbs 19

1Better is the poor man, that walketh in his simplicity, than a rich man that is perverse in his lips and unwise.

2Where there is no knowledge of the soul, there is no good: and he that is hasty with his feet shall stumble.

3The folly of a man supplanteth his steps: and he fretteth in his mind against God.

4Riches make many friends: but from the poor man, even they whom he had, depart.

5A false witness shall not be unpunished: and he that speaketh lies, shall not escape.

6Many honour the person of him that is mighty, and are friends of him that giveth gifts.

7The brethren of the poor man hate him: moreover also his friends have departed far from him. He that followeth after words only, shall have nothing.

8But he that possesseth a mind, loveth his own soul, and he that keepeth prudence, shall find good things.

9A false witness shall not be unpunished: and he that speaketh lies, shall perish.

10Delicacies are not seemly for a fool: nor for a servant to have rule over princes.

11The learning of a man is known by patience: and his glory is to pass over wrongs.

12As the roaring of a lion, so also is the anger of a king: and his cheerfulness as the dew upon the grass.

13A foolish son is the grief of his father: and a wrangling wife is like a roof continually dropping through.

14House and riches are given by parents: but a prudent wife is properly from the Lord.

15Slothfulness casteth into a deep sleep, and an idle soul shall suffer hunger.

16He that keepeth the commandment, keepeth his own soul: but he that neglecteth his own way, shall die.

17He that hath mercy on the poor, lendeth to the Lord: and he will repay him.

18Chastise thy son, despair not: but to the killing of him set not thy soul.

19He that is impatient, shall suffer damage: and when he shall take away, he shall add another thing.

20Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayst be wise in thy latter end.

21There are many thoughts in the heart of a man: but the will of the Lord shall stand firm.

22A needy man is merciful: and better is the poor than the lying man.

23The fear of the Lord is unto life: and he shall abide in the fulness without being visited with evil.

24The slothful hideth his hand under his armpit, and will not so much as bring it to his mouth.

25The wicked man being scourged, the fool shall be wiser: but if thou rebuke a wise man, he will understand discipline.

26He that afflicteth his father, and chaseth away his mother, is infamous and unhappy.

27Cease not, O my son, to hear instruction, and be not ignorant of the words of knowledge.

28An unjust witness scorneth judgment: and the mouth of the wicked devoureth iniquity.

29Judgments are prepared for scorners: and striking hammers for the bodies of fools.

1Melior est pauper qui ambulat in simplicitate sua quam dives torquens labia sua, et insipiens.

2Ubi non est scientia animæ, non est bonum, et qui festinus est pedibus offendet.

3Stultitia hominis supplantat gressus ejus, et contra Deum fervet animo suo.

4Divitiæ addunt amicos plurimos; a paupere autem et hi quos habuit separantur.

5Testis falsus non erit impunitus, et qui mendacia loquitur non effugiet.

6Multi colunt personam potentis, et amici sunt dona tribuentis.

7Fratres hominis pauperis oderunt eum; insuper et amici procul recesserunt ab eo. Qui tantum verba sectatur nihil habebit;

8qui autem possessor est mentis diligit animam suam, et custos prudentiæ inveniet bona.

9Falsus testis non erit impunitus, et qui loquitur mendacia peribit.

10Non decent stultum deliciæ, nec servum dominari principibus.

11Doctrina viri per patientiam noscitur, et gloria ejus est iniqua prætergredi.

12Sicut fremitus leonis, ita et regis ira, et sicut ros super herbam, ita et hilaritas ejus.

13Dolor patris filius stultus, et tecta jugiter perstillantia litigiosa mulier.

14Domus et divitiæ dantur a parentibus; a Domino autem proprie uxor prudens.

15Pigredo immittit soporem, et anima dissoluta esuriet.

16Qui custodit mandatum custodit animam suam; qui autem negligit viam suam mortificabitur.

17Fœneratur Domino qui miseretur pauperis, et vicissitudinem suam reddet ei.

18Erudi filium tuum; ne desperes : ad interfectionem autem ejus ne ponas animam tuam.

19Qui impatiens est sustinebit damnum, et cum rapuerit, aliud apponet.

20Audi consilium, et suscipe disciplinam, ut sis sapiens in novissimis tuis.

21Multæ cogitationes in corde viri; voluntas autem Domini permanebit.

22Homo indigens misericors est, et melior est pauper quam vir mendax.

23Timor Domini ad vitam, et in plenitudine commorabitur absque visitatione pessima.

24Abscondit piger manum suam sub ascella, nec ad os suum applicat eam.

25Pestilente flagellato stultus sapientior erit; si autem corripueris sapientem, intelliget disciplinam.

26Qui affligit patrem, et fugat matrem, ignominiosus est et infelix.

27Non cesses, fili, audire doctrinam, nec ignores sermones scientiæ.

28Testis iniquus deridet judicium, et os impiorum devorat iniquitatem.

29Parata sunt derisoribus judicia, et mallei percutientes stultorum corporibus.

3ἀφροσύνη ἀνδρὸς λυμαίνεται τὰς ὁδοὺς αὐτοῦ τὸν δὲ θεὸν αἰτιᾶται τῇ καρδίᾳ αὐτοῦ

4πλοῦτος προστίθησιν φίλους πολλούς ὁ δὲ πτωχὸς καὶ ἀπὸ τοῦ ὑπάρχοντος φίλου λείπεται

5μάρτυς ψευδὴς οὐκ ἀτιμώρητος ἔσται ὁ δὲ ἐγκαλῶν ἀδίκως οὐ διαφεύξεται

6πολλοὶ θεραπεύουσιν πρόσωπα βασιλέων πᾶς δὲ ὁ κακὸς γίνεται ὄνειδος ἀνδρί

7πᾶς ὃς ἀδελφὸν πτωχὸν μισεῖ καὶ φιλίας μακρὰν ἔσται ἔννοια ἀγαθὴ τοῖς εἰδόσιν αὐτὴν ἐγγιεῖ ἀνὴρ δὲ φρόνιμος εὑρήσει αὐτήν ὁ πολλὰ κακοποιῶν τελεσιουργεῖ κακίαν ὃς δὲ ἐρεθίζει λόγους οὐ σωθήσεται

8ὁ κτώμενος φρόνησιν ἀγαπᾷ ἑαυτόν ὃς δὲ φυλάσσει φρόνησιν εὑρήσει ἀγαθά

9μάρτυς ψευδὴς οὐκ ἀτιμώρητος ἔσται ὃς δ' ἂν ἐκκαύσῃ κακίαν ἀπολεῖται ὑπ' αὐτῆς

10οὐ συμφέρει ἄφρονι τρυφή καὶ ἐὰν οἰκέτης ἄρξηται μεθ' ὕβρεως δυναστεύειν

11ἐλεήμων ἀνὴρ μακροθυμεῖ τὸ δὲ καύχημα αὐτοῦ ἐπέρχεται παρανόμοις

12βασιλέως ἀπειλὴ ὁμοία βρυγμῷ λέοντος ὥσπερ δὲ δρόσος ἐπὶ χόρτῳ οὕτως τὸ ἱλαρὸν αὐτοῦ

13αἰσχύνη πατρὶ υἱὸς ἄφρων καὶ οὐχ ἁγναὶ εὐχαὶ ἀπὸ μισθώματος ἑταίρας

14οἶκον καὶ ὕπαρξιν μερίζουσιν πατέρες παισίν παρὰ δὲ θεοῦ ἁρμόζεται γυνὴ ἀνδρί

15δειλία κατέχει ἀνδρογύναιον ψυχὴ δὲ ἀεργοῦ πεινάσει

16ὃς φυλάσσει ἐντολήν τηρεῖ τὴν ἑαυτοῦ ψυχήν ὁ δὲ καταφρονῶν τῶν ἑαυτοῦ ὁδῶν ἀπολεῖται

17δανίζει θεῷ ὁ ἐλεῶν πτωχόν κατὰ δὲ τὸ δόμα αὐτοῦ ἀνταποδώσει αὐτῷ

18παίδευε υἱόν σου οὕτως γὰρ ἔσται εὔελπις εἰς δὲ ὕβριν μὴ ἐπαίρου τῇ ψυχῇ σου

19κακόφρων ἀνὴρ πολλὰ ζημιωθήσεται ἐὰν δὲ λοιμεύηται καὶ τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ προσθήσει

20ἄκουε υἱέ παιδείαν πατρός σου ἵνα σοφὸς γένῃ ἐπ' ἐσχάτων σου

21πολλοὶ λογισμοὶ ἐν καρδίᾳ ἀνδρός ἡ δὲ βουλὴ τοῦ κυρίου εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα μένει

22καρπὸς ἀνδρὶ ἐλεημοσύνη κρείσσων δὲ πτωχὸς δίκαιος ἢ πλούσιος ψεύστης

23φόβος κυρίου εἰς ζωὴν ἀνδρί ὁ δὲ ἄφοβος αὐλισθήσεται ἐν τόποις οὗ οὐκ ἐπισκοπεῖται γνῶσις

24ὁ ἐγκρύπτων εἰς τὸν κόλπον αὐτοῦ χεῖρας ἀδίκως οὐδὲ τῷ στόματι οὐ μὴ προσαγάγῃ αὐτάς

25λοιμοῦ μαστιγουμένου ἄφρων πανουργότερος γίνεται ἐὰν δὲ ἐλέγχῃς ἄνδρα φρόνιμον νοήσει αἴσθησιν

26ὁ ἀτιμάζων πατέρα καὶ ἀπωθούμενος μητέρα αὐτοῦ καταισχυνθήσεται καὶ ἐπονείδιστος ἔσται

27υἱὸς ἀπολειπόμενος φυλάξαι παιδείαν πατρὸς μελετήσει ῥήσεις κακάς

28ὁ ἐγγυώμενος παῖδα ἄφρονα καθυβρίζει δικαίωμα στόμα δὲ ἀσεβῶν καταπίεται κρίσεις

29ἑτοιμάζονται ἀκολάστοις μάστιγες καὶ τιμωρίαι ὤμοις ἀφρόνων
