Numbers 13

And the people marched from Haseroth, and pitched their tents in the desert of Pharan.

Ibique locutus est Dominus ad Moysen, dicens:

καὶ ἐλάλησεν κύριος πρὸς Μωυσῆν λέγων

And there the Lord spoke to Moses, saying.

Mitte viros, qui considerent terram Chanaan, quam daturus sum filiis Israël, singulos de singulis tribubus, ex principibus.

ἀπόστειλον σεαυτῷ ἄνδρας καὶ κατασκεψάσθωσαν τὴν γῆν τῶν Χαναναίων ἣν ἐγὼ δίδωμι τοῖς υἱοῖς Ισραηλ εἰς κατάσχεσιν ἄνδρα ἕνα κατὰ φυλὴν κατὰ δήμους πατριῶν αὐτῶν ἀποστελεῖς αὐτούς πάντα ἀρχηγὸν ἐξ αὐτῶν

Send men to view the land of Chanaan, which I will give to the children of Israel, one of every tribe, of the rulers.

Fecit Moyses quod Dominus imperaverat, de deserto Pharan mittens principes viros,

καὶ ἐξαπέστειλεν αὐτοὺς Μωυσῆς ἐκ τῆς ἐρήμου Φαραν διὰ φωνῆς κυρίου πάντες ἄνδρες ἀρχηγοὶ υἱῶν Ισραηλ οὗτοι

Moses did what the Lord had commanded, sending from the desert of Pharan, principal men, whose names are these:

quorum ista sunt nomina.

καὶ ταῦτα τὰ ὀνόματα αὐτῶν

Of the tribe of Ruben, Sammua the son of Zechur.

De tribu Ruben, Sammua filium Zechur.

τῆς φυλῆς Ρουβην Σαλαμιηλ υἱὸς Ζακχουρ

Of the tribe of Simeon, Saphat the son of Huri.

De tribu Simeon, Saphat filium Huri.

τῆς φυλῆς Συμεων Σαφατ υἱὸς Σουρι

Of the tribe of Juda, Caleb the son of Jephone.

De tribu Juda, Caleb filium Jephone.

τῆς φυλῆς Ιουδα Χαλεβ υἱὸς Ιεφοννη

Of the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph.

De tribu Issachar, Igal filium Joseph.

τῆς φυλῆς Ισσαχαρ Ιγααλ υἱὸς Ιωσηφ

Of the tribe of Ephraim, Osee the son of Nun.

De tribu Ephraim, Osee filium Nun.

τῆς φυλῆς Εφραιμ Αυση υἱὸς Ναυη

Of the tribe of Benjamin, Phalti the son of Raphu.

De tribu Benjamin, Phalti filium Raphu.

τῆς φυλῆς Βενιαμιν Φαλτι υἱὸς Ραφου

Of the tribe of Zabulon, Geddiel the son of Sodi.

De tribu Zabulon, Geddiel filium Sodi.

τῆς φυλῆς Ζαβουλων Γουδιηλ υἱὸς Σουδι

Of the tribe of Joseph, of the sceptre of Manasses, Gaddi the son of Susi.

De tribu Joseph, sceptri Manasse, Gaddi filium Susi.

τῆς φυλῆς Ιωσηφ τῶν υἱῶν Μανασση Γαδδι υἱὸς Σουσι

Of the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the son of Gemalli.

De tribu Dan, Ammiel filium Gemalli.

τῆς φυλῆς Δαν Αμιηλ υἱὸς Γαμαλι

Of the tribe of Aser, Sthur the son of Michael.

De tribu Aser, Sthur filium Michaël.

τῆς φυλῆς Ασηρ Σαθουρ υἱὸς Μιχαηλ

Of the tribe of Nephtali, Nahabi the son of Vapsi.

De tribu Nephthali, Nahabi filium Vapsi.

τῆς φυλῆς Νεφθαλι Ναβι υἱὸς Ιαβι

Of the tribe of Gad, Guel the son of Machi.

De tribu Gad, Guel filium Machi.

τῆς φυλῆς Γαδ Γουδιηλ υἱὸς Μακχι

These are the names of the men, whom Moses sent to view the land: and he called Osee the son of Nun, Joshua.

Hæc sunt nomina virorum, quos misit Moyses ad considerandam terram : vocavitque Osee filium Nun, Josue.

ταῦτα τὰ ὀνόματα τῶν ἀνδρῶν οὓς ἀπέστειλεν Μωυσῆς κατασκέψασθαι τὴν γῆν καὶ ἐπωνόμασεν Μωυσῆς τὸν Αυση υἱὸν Ναυη Ἰησοῦν

And Moses sent them to view the land of Chanaan, and said to them: Go you up by the south side. And when you shall come to the mountains,

Misit ergo eos Moyses ad considerandam terram Chanaan, et dixit ad eos : Ascendite per meridianam plagam. Cumque veneritis ad montes,

καὶ ἀπέστειλεν αὐτοὺς Μωυσῆς κατασκέψασθαι τὴν γῆν Χανααν καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς ἀνάβητε ταύτῃ τῇ ἐρήμῳ καὶ ἀναβήσεσθε εἰς τὸ ὄρος

View the land, of what sort it is, and the people that are the inhabitants thereof, whether they be strong or weak: few in number or many:

considerate terram, qualis sit : et populum qui habitator est ejus, utrum fortis sit an infirmus : si pauci numero an plures:

καὶ ὄψεσθε τὴν γῆν τίς ἐστιν καὶ τὸν λαὸν τὸν ἐγκαθήμενον ἐπ' αὐτῆς εἰ ἰσχυρότερός ἐστιν ἢ ἀσθενής εἰ ὀλίγοι εἰσὶν ἢ πολλοί

The land itself, whether it be good or bad: what manner of cities, walled or without walls:

ipsa terra, bona an mala : urbes quales, muratæ an absque muris:

καὶ τίς ἡ γῆ εἰς ἣν οὗτοι ἐγκάθηνται ἐπ' αὐτῆς εἰ καλή ἐστιν ἢ πονηρά καὶ τίνες αἱ πόλεις εἰς ἃς οὗτοι κατοικοῦσιν ἐν αὐταῖς εἰ ἐν τειχήρεσιν ἢ ἐν ἀτειχίστοις

The ground, fat or barren, woody or without trees. Be of good courage, and bring us of the fruits of the land. Now it was the time when the firstripe grapes are fit to be eaten.

humus, pinguis an sterilis, nemorosa an absque arboribus. Confortamini, et afferte nobis de fructibus terræ. Erat autem tempus quando jam præcoquæ uvæ vesci possunt.

καὶ τίς ἡ γῆ εἰ πίων ἢ παρειμένη εἰ ἔστιν ἐν αὐτῇ δένδρα ἢ οὔ καὶ προσκαρτερήσαντες λήμψεσθε ἀπὸ τῶν καρπῶν τῆς γῆς καὶ αἱ ἡμέραι ἡμέραι ἔαρος πρόδρομοι σταφυλῆς

And when they were gone up, they viewed the land from the desert of Sin, unto Rohob as you enter into Emath.

Cumque ascendissent, exploraverunt terram a deserto Sin, usque Rohob intrantibus Emath.

καὶ ἀναβάντες κατεσκέψαντο τὴν γῆν ἀπὸ τῆς ἐρήμου Σιν ἕως Ρααβ εἰσπορευομένων Εφααθ

And they went up at the south side, and came to Hebron, where were Achiman and Sisai and Tholmai the sons of Enac. For Hebron was built seven years before Tanis the city of Egypt.

Ascenderuntque ad meridiem, et venerunt in Hebron, ubi erant Achiman et Sisai et Tholmai filii Enac : nam Hebron septem annis ante Tanim urbem Ægypti condita est.

καὶ ἀνέβησαν κατὰ τὴν ἔρημον καὶ ἦλθον ἕως Χεβρων καὶ ἐκεῖ Αχιμαν καὶ Σεσσι καὶ Θελαμιν γενεαὶ Εναχ καὶ Χεβρων ἑπτὰ ἔτεσιν ᾠκοδομήθη πρὸ τοῦ Τάνιν Αἰγύπτου

And forward as far as the torrent of the cluster of grapes, they cut off a branch with its cluster of grapes, which two men carried upon a lever. They took also of the pomegranates and of the figs of that place:

Pergentesque usque ad Torrentem botri, absciderunt palmitem cum uva sua, quem portaverunt in vecte duo viri. De malis quoque granatis et de ficis loci illius tulerunt:

καὶ ἤλθοσαν ἕως Φάραγγος βότρυος καὶ κατεσκέψαντο αὐτήν καὶ ἔκοψαν ἐκεῖθεν κλῆμα καὶ βότρυν σταφυλῆς ἕνα ἐπ' αὐτοῦ καὶ ἦραν αὐτὸν ἐπ' ἀναφορεῦσιν καὶ ἀπὸ τῶν ῥοῶν καὶ ἀπὸ τῶν συκῶν

Which was called Nehelescol, that is to say, the torrent of the cluster of grapes, because from thence the children of Israel had carried a cluster of grapes.

qui appellatus est Nehelescol, id est Torrens botri, eo quod botrum portassent inde filii Israël.

τὸν τόπον ἐκεῖνον ἐπωνόμασαν Φάραγξ βότρυος διὰ τὸν βότρυν ὃν ἔκοψαν ἐκεῖθεν οἱ υἱοὶ Ισραηλ

And they that went to spy out the land returned after forty days, having gone round all the country,

Reversique exploratores terræ post quadraginta dies, omni regione circuita,

καὶ ἀπέστρεψαν ἐκεῖθεν κατασκεψάμενοι τὴν γῆν μετὰ τεσσαράκοντα ἡμέρας

And came to Moses and Aaron and to all the assembly of the children of Israel to the desert of Pharan, which is in Cades. And speaking to them and to all the multitude, they showed them the fruits of the land:

venerunt ad Moysen et Aaron et ad omnem cœtum filiorum Israël in desertum Pharan, quod est in Cades. Locutique eis et omni multitudini ostenderunt fructus terræ:

καὶ πορευθέντες ἦλθον πρὸς Μωυσῆν καὶ Ααρων καὶ πρὸς πᾶσαν συναγωγὴν υἱῶν Ισραηλ εἰς τὴν ἔρημον Φαραν Καδης καὶ ἀπεκρίθησαν αὐτοῖς ῥῆμα καὶ πάσῃ τῇ συναγωγῇ καὶ ἔδειξαν τὸν καρπὸν τῆς γῆς

And they related and said: We came into the land to which thou sentest us, which in very deed floweth with milk and honey as may be known by these fruits:

et narraverunt, dicentes : Venimus in terram, ad quam misisti nos, quæ revera fluit lacte et melle, ut ex his fructibus cognosci potest:

καὶ διηγήσαντο αὐτῷ καὶ εἶπαν ἤλθαμεν εἰς τὴν γῆν εἰς ἣν ἀπέστειλας ἡμᾶς γῆν ῥέουσαν γάλα καὶ μέλι καὶ οὗτος ὁ καρπὸς αὐτῆς

But it hath very strong inhabitants, and the cities are great and walled. We saw there the race of Enac.

sed cultores fortissimos habet, et urbes grandes atque muratas. Stirpem Enac vidimus ibi.

ἀλλ' ἢ ὅτι θρασὺ τὸ ἔθνος τὸ κατοικοῦν ἐπ' αὐτῆς καὶ αἱ πόλεις ὀχυραὶ τετειχισμέναι καὶ μεγάλαι σφόδρα καὶ τὴν γενεὰν Εναχ ἑωράκαμεν ἐκεῖ

Amalec dwelleth in the south, the Hethite and the Jebusite and the Amorrhite in the mountains: but the Chanaanite abideth by the sea and near the streams of the Jordan.

Amalec habitat in meridie, Hethæus et Jebusæus et Amorrhæus in montanis : Chananæus vero moratur juxta mare et circa fluenta Jordanis.

καὶ Αμαληκ κατοικεῖ ἐν τῇ γῇ τῇ πρὸς νότον καὶ ὁ Χετταῖος καὶ ὁ Ευαῖος καὶ ὁ Ιεβουσαῖος καὶ ὁ Αμορραῖος κατοικεῖ ἐν τῇ ὀρεινῇ καὶ ὁ Χαναναῖος κατοικεῖ παρὰ θάλασσαν καὶ παρὰ τὸν Ιορδάνην ποταμόν

In the mean time Caleb, to still the murmuring of the people that rose against Moses, said: Let us go up and possess the land, for we shall be able to conquer it.

Inter hæc Caleb compescens murmur populi, qui oriebatur contra Moysen, ait : Ascendamus, et possideamus terram, quoniam poterimus obtinere eam.

καὶ κατεσιώπησεν Χαλεβ τὸν λαὸν πρὸς Μωυσῆν καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ οὐχί ἀλλὰ ἀναβάντες ἀναβησόμεθα καὶ κατακληρονομήσομεν αὐτήν ὅτι δυνατοὶ δυνησόμεθα πρὸς αὐτούς

But the others, that had been with him, said: No, we are not able to go up to this people, because they are stronger than we.

Alii vero, qui fuerant cum eo, dicebant : Nequaquam ad hunc populum valemus ascendere, quia fortior nobis est.

καὶ οἱ ἄνθρωποι οἱ συναναβάντες μετ' αὐτοῦ εἶπαν οὐκ ἀναβαίνομεν ὅτι οὐ μὴ δυνώμεθα ἀναβῆναι πρὸς τὸ ἔθνος ὅτι ἰσχυρότερόν ἐστιν ἡμῶν μᾶλλον

And they spoke ill of the land, which they had viewed, before the children of Israel, saying: The land which we have viewed, devoureth its inhabitants: the people, that we beheld are of a tall stature.

Detraxeruntque terræ, quam inspexerant, apud filios Israël, dicentes : Terra, quam lustravimus, devorat habitatores suos : populus, quem aspeximus, proceræ staturæ est.

καὶ ἐξήνεγκαν ἔκστασιν τῆς γῆς ἣν κατεσκέψαντο αὐτήν πρὸς τοὺς υἱοὺς Ισραηλ λέγοντες τὴν γῆν ἣν παρήλθομεν αὐτὴν κατασκέψασθαι γῆ κατέσθουσα τοὺς κατοικοῦντας ἐπ' αὐτῆς ἐστιν πᾶς ὁ λαός ὃν ἑωράκαμεν ἐν αὐτῇ ἄνδρες ὑπερμήκεις

There we saw certain monsters of the sons of Enac, of the giant kind: in comparison of whom, we seemed like locusts.

Ibi vidimus monstra quædam filiorum Enac de genere giganteo : quibus comparati, quasi locustæ videbamur.

καὶ ἐκεῖ ἑωράκαμεν τοὺς γίγαντας καὶ ἦμεν ἐνώπιον αὐτῶν ὡσεὶ ἀκρίδες ἀλλὰ καὶ οὕτως ἦμεν ἐνώπιον αὐτῶν
