Matthew 20

The kingdom of heaven is like to an householder, who went out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard.

Simile est regnum cælorum homini patrifamilias, qui exiit primo mane conducere operarios in vineam suam.

Ὁμοία γάρ ἐστιν ἡ βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν ἀνθρώπῳ οἰκοδεσπότῃ ὅστις ἐξῆλθεν ἅμα πρωῒ μισθώσασθαι ἐργάτας εἰς τὸν ἀμπελῶνα αὐτοῦ.

And having agreed with the labourers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard.

Conventione autem facta cum operariis ex denario diurno, misit eos in vineam suam.

συμφωνήσας δὲ μετὰ τῶν ἐργατῶν ἐκ δηναρίου τὴν ἡμέραν ἀπέστειλεν αὐτοὺς εἰς τὸν ἀμπελῶνα αὐτοῦ.

And going out about the third hour, he saw others standing in the marketplace idle.

Et egressus circa horam tertiam, vidit alios stantes in foro otiosos,

καὶ ἐξελθὼν περὶ τρίτην ὥραν εἶδεν ἄλλους ἑστῶτας ἐν τῇ ἀγορᾷ ἀργούς,

And he said to them: Go you also into my vineyard, and I will give you what shall be just.

et dixit illis : Ite et vos in vineam meam, et quod justum fuerit dabo vobis.

καὶ ἐκείνοις εἶπεν: ὑπάγετε καὶ ὑμεῖς εἰς τὸν ἀμπελῶνα, καὶ ὃ ἐὰν ᾖ δίκαιον δώσω ὑμῖν.

And they went their way. And again he went out about the sixth and the ninth hour, and did in like manner.

Illi autem abierunt. Iterum autem exiit circa sextam et nonam horam : et fecit similiter.

οἱ δὲ ἀπῆλθον. πάλιν δὲ ἐξελθὼν περὶ ἕκτην καὶ ἐνάτην ὥραν ἐποίησεν ὡσαύτως.

But about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing, and he saith to them: Why stand you here all the day idle?

Circa undecimam vero exiit, et invenit alios stantes, et dicit illis : Quid hic statis tota die otiosi?

περὶ δὲ τὴν ἑνδεκάτην ἐξελθὼν εὗρεν ἄλλους ἑστῶτας, καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς: τί ὧδε ἑστήκατε ὅλην τὴν ἡμέραν ἀργοί;

They say to him: Because no man hath hired us. He saith to them: Go ye also into my vineyard.

Dicunt ei : Quia nemo nos conduxit. Dicit illis : Ite et vos in vineam meam.

λέγουσιν αὐτῷ: ὅτι οὐδεὶς ἡμᾶς ἐμισθώσατο. λέγει αὐτοῖς: ὑπάγετε καὶ ὑμεῖς εἰς τὸν ἀμπελῶνα.

And when evening was come, the lord of the vineyard saith to his steward: Call the labourers and pay them their hire, beginning from the last even to the first.

Cum sero autem factum esset, dicit dominus vineæ procuratori suo : Voca operarios, et redde illis mercedem incipiens a novissimis usque ad primos.

ὀψίας δὲ γενομένης λέγει ὁ κύριος τοῦ ἀμπελῶνος τῷ ἐπιτρόπῳ αὐτοῦ: κάλεσον τοὺς ἐργάτας καὶ ἀπόδος τὸν μισθὸν ἀρξάμενος ἀπὸ τῶν ἐσχάτων ἕως τῶν πρώτων.

When therefore they were come that came about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny.

Cum venissent ergo qui circa undecimam horam venerant, acceperunt singulos denarios.

ἐλθόντες δὲ οἱ περὶ τὴν ἑνδεκάτην ὥραν ἔλαβον ἀνὰ δηνάριον.

But when the first also came, they thought that they should receive more: And they also received every man a penny.

Venientes autem et primi, arbitrati sunt quod plus essent accepturi : acceperunt autem et ipsi singulos denarios.

καὶ ἐλθόντες οἱ πρῶτοι ἐνόμισαν ὅτι πλεῖον λήμψονται: καὶ ἔλαβον [τὸ] ἀνὰ δηνάριον καὶ αὐτοί.

And receiving it they murmured against the master of the house,

Et accipientes murmurabant adversus patremfamilias,

λαβόντες δὲ ἐγόγγυζον κατὰ τοῦ οἰκοδεσπότου

Saying: These last have worked but one hour and thou hast made them equal to us, that have borne the burden of the day and the heats.

dicentes : Hi novissimi una hora fecerunt, et pares illos nobis fecisti, qui portavimus pondus diei, et æstus.

λέγοντες: οὗτοι οἱ ἔσχατοι μίαν ὥραν ἐποίησαν, καὶ ἴσους αὐτοὺς ἡμῖν ἐποίησας τοῖς βαστάσασι τὸ βάρος τῆς ἡμέρας καὶ τὸν καύσωνα.

But he answering said to one of them: friend, I do thee no wrong: didst thou not agree with me for a penny?

At ille respondens uni eorum, dixit : Amice, non facio tibi injuriam : nonne ex denario convenisti mecum?

ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς ἑνὶ αὐτῶν εἶπεν: ἑταῖρε, οὐκ ἀδικῶ σε: οὐχὶ δηναρίου συνεφώνησάς μοι;

Take what is thine, and go thy way: I will also give to this last even as to thee.

Tolle quod tuum est, et vade : volo autem et huic novissimo dare sicut et tibi.

ἆρον τὸ σὸν καὶ ὕπαγε. θέλω δὲ τούτῳ τῷ ἐσχάτῳ δοῦναι ὡς καὶ σοί:

Or, is it not lawful for me to do what I will? Is thy eye evil, because I am good?

Aut non licet mihi quod volo, facere? an oculus tuus nequam est, quia ego bonus sum?

οὐκ ἔξεστίν μοι ὃ θέλω ποιῆσαι ἐν τοῖς ἐμοῖς; ἢ ὁ ὀφθαλμός σου πονηρός ἐστιν ὅτι ἐγὼ ἀγαθός εἰμι;

So shall the last be first and the first last. For many are called but few chosen.

Sic erunt novissimi primi, et primi novissimi. Multi enim sunt vocati, pauci vero electi.

οὕτως ἔσονται οἱ ἔσχατοι πρῶτοι καὶ οἱ πρῶτοι ἔσχατοι.

And Jesus going up to Jerusalem, took the twelve disciples apart and said to them:

Et ascendens Jesus Jerosolymam, assumpsit duodecim discipulos secreto, et ait illis:

Καὶ ἀναβαίνων ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα παρέλαβεν τοὺς δώδεκα [μαθητὰς] κατ' ἰδίαν, καὶ ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς:

Behold we go up to Jerusalem, and the Son of man shall be betrayed to the chief priests and the scribes: and they shall condemn him to death.

Ecce ascendimus Jerosolymam, et Filius hominis tradetur principibus sacerdotum, et scribis, et condemnabunt eum morte,

ἰδοὺ ἀναβαίνομεν εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα, καὶ ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου παραδοθήσεται τοῖς ἀρχιερεῦσιν καὶ γραμματεῦσιν, καὶ κατακρινοῦσιν αὐτὸν [θανάτῳ].

And shall deliver him to the Gentiles to be mocked and scourged and crucified: and the third day he shall rise again.

et tradent eum gentibus ad illudendum, et flagellandum, et crucifigendum, et tertia die resurget.

καὶ παραδώσουσιν αὐτὸν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν εἰς τὸ ἐμπαῖξαι καὶ μαστιγῶσαι καὶ σταυρῶσαι, καὶ τῇ τρίτῃ ἡμέρᾳ ἐγερθήσεται.

Then came to him the mother of the sons of Zebedee with her sons, adoring and asking something of him.

Tunc accessit ad eum mater filiorum Zebedæi cum filiis suis, adorans et petens aliquid ab eo.

Τότε προσῆλθεν αὐτῷ ἡ μήτηρ τῶν υἱῶν Ζεβεδαίου μετὰ τῶν υἱῶν αὐτῆς, προσκυνοῦσα καὶ αἰτοῦσά τι ἀπ'' αὐτοῦ.

Who said to her: What wilt thou? She saith to him: say that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on thy left, in thy kingdom.

Qui dixit ei : Quid vis? Ait illi : Dic ut sedeant hi duo filii mei, unus ad dexteram tuam, et unus ad sinistram in regno tuo.

ὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτῇ: τί θέλεις; λέγει αὐτῷ: εἰπὲ ἵνα καθίσωσιν οὗτοι οἱ δύο υἱοί μου εἷς ἐκ δεξιῶν καὶ εἷς ἐξ εὐωνύμων σου ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ σου.

And Jesus answering, said: You know not what you ask. Can you drink the chalice that I shall drink? They say to him: We can.

Respondens autem Jesus, dixit : Nescitis quid petatis. Potestis bibere calicem, quem ego bibiturus sum? Dicunt ei : Possumus.

ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν: οὐκ οἴδατε τί αἰτεῖσθε. δύνασθε πιεῖν τὸ ποτήριον ὃ ἐγὼ μέλλω πίνειν; λέγουσιν αὐτῷ: δυνάμεθα.

He saith to them: My chalice indeed you shall drink; but to sit on my right or left hand is not mine to give to you, but to them for whom it is prepared by my Father.

Ait illis : Calicem quidem meum bibetis : sedere autem ad dexteram meam vel sinistram non est meum dare vobis, sed quibus paratum est a Patre meo.

λέγει αὐτοῖς: τὸ μὲν ποτήριόν μου πίεσθε, τὸ δὲ καθίσαι ἐκ δεξιῶν μου καὶ ἐξ εὐωνύμων, οὐκ ἔστιν ἐμὸν δοῦναι, ἀλλ' οἷς ἡτοίμασται ὑπὸ τοῦ πατρός μου.

And the ten, hearing it, were moved with indignation against the two brethren.

Et audientes decem, indignati sunt de duobus fratribus.

καὶ ἀκούσαντες οἱ δέκα ἠγανάκτησαν περὶ τῶν δύο ἀδελφῶν.

But Jesus called them to him and said: You know that the princes of the Gentiles lord it over them; and that they that are the greater, exercise power upon them.

Jesus autem vocavit eos ad se, et ait : Scitis quia principes gentium dominantur eorum : et qui majores sunt, potestatem exercent in eos.

ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς προσκαλεσάμενος αὐτοὺς εἶπεν: οἴδατε ὅτι οἱ ἄρχοντες τῶν ἐθνῶν κατακυριεύουσιν αὐτῶν καὶ οἱ μεγάλοι κατεξουσιάζουσιν αὐτῶν.

It shall not be so among you: but whosoever is the greater among you, let him be your minister.

Non ita erit inter vos : sed quicumque voluerit inter vos major fieri, sit vester minister:

οὐχ οὕτως ἐστὶν ἐν ὑμῖν: ἀλλ' ὃς ἂν θέλῃ ἐν ὑμῖν μέγας γενέσθαι ἔσται ὑμῶν διάκονος,

And he that will be first among you shall be your servant.

et qui voluerit inter vos primus esse, erit vester servus.

καὶ ὃς ἂν θέλῃ ἐν ὑμῖν εἶναι πρῶτος ἔσται ὑμῶν δοῦλος:

Even as the Son of man is not come to be ministered unto, but to minister and to give his life a redemption for many.

Sicut Filius hominis non venit ministrari, sed ministrare, et dare animam suam redemptionem pro multis.

ὥσπερ ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου οὐκ ἦλθεν διακονηθῆναι, ἀλλὰ διακονῆσαι καὶ δοῦναι τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ λύτρον ἀντὶ πολλῶν.

And when they went out from Jericho, a great multitude followed him.

Et egredientibus illis ab Jericho, secuta est eum turba multa,

Καὶ ἐκπορευομένων αὐτῶν ἀπὸ Ἰεριχὼ ἠκολούθησεν αὐτῷ ὄχλος πολύς.

And behold two blind men sitting by the way side heard that Jesus passed by. And they cried out, saying: O Lord, thou son of David, have mercy on us.

et ecce duo cæci sedentes secus viam audierunt quia Jesus transiret : et clamaverunt, dicentes : Domine, miserere nostri, fili David.

καὶ ἰδοὺ δύο τυφλοὶ καθήμενοι παρὰ τὴν ὁδόν, ἀκούσαντες ὅτι Ἰησοῦς παράγει, ἔκραξαν λέγοντες, κύριε] ἐλέησον ἡμᾶς, υἱὸς Δαυίδ.

And the multitude rebuked them that they should hold their peace. But they cried out the more, saying: O Lord, thou son of David, have mercy on us.

Turba autem increpabat eos ut tacerent. At illi magis clamabant, dicentes : Domine, miserere nostri, fili David.

ὁ δὲ ὄχλος ἐπετίμησεν αὐτοῖς ἵνα σιωπήσωσιν: οἱ δὲ μεῖζον ἔκραξαν λέγοντες: κύριε, ἐλέησον, ἡμᾶς υἱὸς Δαυίδ.

And Jesus stood and called them and said: What will ye that I do to you?

Et stetit Jesus, et vocavit eos, et ait : Quid vultis ut faciam vobis?

καὶ στὰς [ὁ] Ἰησοῦς ἐφώνησεν αὐτοὺς καὶ εἶπεν: τί θέλετε ποιήσω ὑμῖν;

They say to him: Lord, that our eyes be opened.

Dicunt illi : Domine, ut aperiantur oculi nostri.

λέγουσιν αὐτῷ: κύριε, ἵνα ἀνοιγῶσιν οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ ἡμῶν.

And Jesus having compassion on them, touched their eyes. And immediately they saw and followed him.

Misertus autem eorum Jesus, tetigit oculos eorum. Et confestim viderunt, et secuti sunt eum.

σπλαγχνισθεὶς δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἥψατο τῶν ὀμμάτων αὐτῶν, καὶ εὐθέως ἀνέβλεψαν καὶ ἠκολούθησαν αὐτῷ.
