John 4

When Jesus therefore understood the Pharisees had heard that Jesus maketh more disciples and baptizeth more than John,

Ut ergo cognovit Jesus quia audierunt pharisæi quod Jesus plures discipulos facit, et baptizat, quam Joannes

Ὡς οὖν ἔγνω ὁ κύριοσ ὅτι ἤκουσαν οἱ Φαρισαῖοι ὅτι Ἰησοῦς πλείονας μαθητὰς ποιεῖ καὶ βαπτίζει [ἢ] Ἰωάννης,

(Though Jesus himself did not baptize, but his disciples),

(quamquam Jesus non baptizaret, sed discipuli ejus),

καίτοιγε Ἰησοῦς αὐτὸς οὐκ ἐβάπτιζεν ἀλλ' οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ,

He left Judea and went again into Galilee.

reliquit Judæam, et abiit iterum in Galilæam.

ἀφῆκεν τὴν Ἰουδαίαν καὶ ἀπῆλθεν πάλιν εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν.

And he was of necessity to pass through Samaria.

Oportebat autem eum transire per Samariam.

ἔδει δὲ αὐτὸν διέρχεσθαι διὰ τῆς Σαμαρείας.

He cometh therefore to a city of Samaria, which is called Sichar, near the land which Jacob gave to his son Joseph.

Venit ergo in civitatem Samariæ, quæ dicitur Sichar, juxta prædium quod dedit Jacob Joseph filio suo.

ἔρχεται οὖν εἰς πόλιν τῆς Σαμαρείας λεγομένην Συχὰρ, πλησίον τοῦ χωρίου ὃ ἔδωκεν Ἰακὼβ τῷ Ἰωσὴφ τῷ υἱῷ αὐτοῦ.

Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well. It was about the sixth hour.

Erat autem ibi fons Jacob. Jesus ergo fatigatus ex itinere, sedebat sic supra fontem. Hora erat quasi sexta.

ἦν δὲ ἐκεῖ πηγὴ τοῦ Ἰακώβ. ὁ οὖν Ἰησοῦς κεκοπιακὼς ἐκ τῆς ὁδοιπορίας ἐκαθέζετο οὕτως ἐπὶ τῇ πηγῇ: ὥρα ἦν ὡς ἕκτη.

There cometh a woman of Samaria, to draw water. Jesus saith to her: Give me to drink.

Venit mulier de Samaria haurire aquam. Dicit ei Jesus : Da mihi bibere.

ἔρχεται γυνὴ ἐκ τῆς Σαμαρείας ἀντλῆσαι ὕδωρ. λέγει αὐτῇ ὁ Ἰησοῦς, δός μοι πεῖν:

For his disciples were gone into the city to buy meats.

(Discipuli enim ejus abierant in civitatem ut cibos emerent.)

οἱ γὰρ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ ἀπεληλύθεισαν εἰς τὴν πόλιν, ἵνα τροφὰς ἀγοράσωσιν.

Then that Samaritan woman saith to him: How dost thou, being a Jew; ask of me to drink, who am a Samaritan woman? For the Jews do not communicate with the Samaritans.

Dicit ergo ei mulier illa Samaritana : Quomodo tu, Judæus cum sis, bibere a me poscis, quæ sum mulier Samaritana? non enim coutuntur Judæi Samaritanis.

λέγει οὖν αὐτῷ ἡ γυνὴ ἡ Σαμαρῖτις: πῶς σὺ Ἰουδαῖος ὢν παρ' ἐμοῦ πεῖν αἰτεῖς γυναικὸς Σαμαρίτιδος οὔσης; [οὐ γὰρ συγχρῶνται Ἰουδαῖοι Σαμαρίταις]

Jesus answered and said to her: If thou didst know the gift of God and who he is that saith to thee: Give me to drink; thou perhaps wouldst have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.

Respondit Jesus, et dixit ei : Si scires donum Dei, et quis est qui dicit tibi : Da mihi bibere, tu forsitan petisses ab eo, et dedisset tibi aquam vivam.

ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῇ: εἰ ᾔδεις τὴν δωρεὰν τοῦ θεοῦ, καὶ τίς ἐστιν ὁ λέγων σοι: δός μοι πεῖν, σὺ ἂν ᾔτησας αὐτὸν καὶ ἔδωκεν ἄν σοι ὕδωρ ζῶν.

The woman saith to him: Sir, thou hast nothing wherein to draw, and the well is deep. From whence then hast thou living water?

Dicit ei mulier : Domine, neque in quo haurias habes, et puteus altus est : unde ergo habes aquam vivam?

λέγει αὐτῷ κύριε, οὔτε ἄντλημα ἔχεις καὶ τὸ φρέαρ ἐστὶν βαθύ: πόθεν οὖν ἔχεις τὸ ὕδωρ τὸ ζῶν;

Art thou greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank thereof, himself and his children and his cattle?

Numquid tu major es patre nostro Jacob, qui dedit nobis puteum, et ipse ex eo bibit, et filii ejus, et pecora ejus?

μὴ σὺ μείζων εἶ τοῦ πατρὸς ἡμῶν Ἰακώβ, ὃς ἔδωκεν ἡμῖν τὸ φρέαρ, καὶ αὐτὸς ἐξ αὐτοῦ ἔπιεν καὶ οἱ υἱοὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ τὰ θρέμματα αὐτοῦ;

Jesus answered and said to her: Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: but he that shall drink of the water that I will give him shall not thirst for ever.

Respondit Jesus, et dixit ei : Omnis qui bibit ex aqua hac, sitiet iterum; qui autem biberit ex aqua quam ego dabo ei, non sitiet in æternum:

ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῇ: πᾶς ὁ πίνων ἐκ τοῦ ὕδατος τούτου διψήσει πάλιν:

But the water that I will give him shall become in him a fountain of water, springing up into life everlasting.

sed aqua quam ego dabo ei, fiet in eo fons aquæ salientis in vitam æternam.

ὃς δ' ἂν πίῃ ἐκ τοῦ ὕδατος οὗ ἐγὼ δώσω αὐτῷ, οὐ μὴ διψήσει εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα, ἀλλὰ τὸ ὕδωρ ὃ δώσω αὐτῷ γενήσεται ἐν αὐτῷ πηγὴ ὕδατος ἁλλομένου εἰς ζωὴν αἰώνιον.

The woman said to him: Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come hither to draw.

Dicit ad eum mulier : Domine, da mihi hanc aquam, ut non sitiam, neque veniam huc haurire.

λέγει πρὸς αὐτὸν ἡ γυνή: κύριε, δός μοι τοῦτο τὸ ὕδωρ, ἵνα μὴ διψῶ μηδὲ διέρχωμαι ἐνθάδε ἀντλεῖν.

Jesus saith to her: Go, call thy husband, and come hither.

Dicit ei Jesus : Vade, voca virum tuum, et veni huc.

λέγει αὐτῇ: ὕπαγε φώνησον σου τὸν ἄνδρα καὶ ἐλθὲ ἐνθάδε.

The woman answered and said: I have no husband. Jesus said to her: Thou hast said well: I have no husband.

Respondit mulier, et dixit : Non habeo virum. Dicit ei Jesus : Bene dixisti, quia non habeo virum;

ἀπεκρίθη ἡ γυνὴ καὶ εἶπεν: [αὐτῷ] οὐκ ἔχω. ἄνδρα λέγει αὐτῇ ὁ Ἰησοῦς: καλῶς εἶπας ὅτι ἄνδρα οὐκ ἔχω:

For thou hast had five husbands: and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband. This, thou hast said truly.

quinque enim viros habuisti, et nunc, quem habes, non est tuus vir : hoc vere dixisti.

πέντε γὰρ ἄνδρας ἔσχες, καὶ νῦν ὃν ἔχεις οὐκ ἔστιν σου ἀνήρ: τοῦτο ἀληθὲς εἴρηκας.

The woman saith to him: Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.

Dicit ei mulier : Domine, video quia propheta es tu.

λέγει αὐτῷ ἡ γυνή: κύριε, θεωρῶ ὅτι προφήτης εἶ σύ.

Our fathers adored on this mountain: and you say that at Jerusalem is the place where men must adore.

Patres nostri in monte hoc adoraverunt, et vos dicitis, quia Jerosolymis est locus ubi adorare oportet.

οἱ πατέρες ἡμῶν ἐν τῷ ὄρει τούτῳ προσεκύνησαν: καὶ ὑμεῖς λέγετε ὅτι ἐν Ἱεροσολύμοις ἐστὶν ὁ τόπος ὅπου προσκυνεῖν δεῖ.

Jesus saith to her: Woman, believe me that the hour cometh, when you shall neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, adore the Father.

Dicit ei Jesus : Mulier, crede mihi, quia venit hora, quando neque in monte hoc, neque in Jerosolymis adorabitis Patrem.

λέγει αὐτῇ ὁ Ἰησοῦς: πίστευέ μοι, γύναι, ὅτι ἔρχεται ὥρα ὅτε οὔτε ἐν τῷ ὄρει τούτῳ οὔτε ἐν Ἱεροσολύμοις προσκυνήσετε τῷ πατρί.

You adore that which you know not: we adore that which we know. For salvation is of the Jews.

Vos adoratis quod nescitis : nos adoramus quod scimus, quia salus ex Judæis est.

ὑμεῖς προσκυνεῖτε ὃ οὐκ οἴδατε, ἡμεῖς προσκυνοῦμεν ὃ οἴδαμεν, ὅτι ἡ σωτηρία ἐκ τῶν Ἰουδαίων ἐστίν:

But the hour cometh and now is, when the true adorers shall adore the Father in spirit and in truth. For the Father also seeketh such to adore him.

Sed venit hora, et nunc est, quando veri adoratores adorabunt Patrem in spiritu et veritate. Nam et Pater tales quærit, qui adorent eum.

ἀλλὰ ἔρχεται ὥρα καὶ νῦν ἐστιν, ὅτε οἱ ἀληθινοὶ προσκυνηταὶ προσκυνήσουσιν τῷ πατρὶ ἐν πνεύματι καὶ ἀληθείᾳ: καὶ γὰρ ὁ πατὴρ τοιούτους ζητεῖ τοὺς προσκυνοῦντας αὐτόν.

God is a spirit: and they that adore him must adore him in spirit and in truth.

Spiritus est Deus : et eos qui adorant eum, in spiritu et veritate oportet adorare.

πνεῦμα ὁ θεός, καὶ τοὺς προσκυνοῦντας αὐτὸν ἐν πνεύματι καὶ ἀληθείᾳ δεῖ προσκυνεῖν.

The woman saith to him: I know that the Messias cometh (who is called Christ): therefore, when he is come, he will tell us all things.

Dicit ei mulier : Scio quia Messias venit (qui dicitur Christus) : cum ergo venerit ille, nobis annuntiabit omnia.

λέγει αὐτῷ ἡ γυνή: οἶδα ὅτι Μεσσίας ἔρχεται, ὁ λεγόμενος Χριστός: ὅταν ἔλθῃ ἐκεῖνος, ἀναγγελεῖ ἡμῖν ἅπαντα.

Jesus saith to her: I am he, who am speaking with thee.

Dicit ei Jesus : Ego sum, qui loquor tecum.

λέγει αὐτῇ ὁ Ἰησοῦς: ἐγώ εἰμι, ὁ λαλῶν σοι.

And immediately his disciples came. And they wondered that he talked with the woman. Yet no man said: What seekest thou? Or: Why talkest thou with her?

Et continuo venerunt discipuli ejus, et mirabantur quia cum muliere loquebatur. Nemo tamen dixit : Quid quæris? aut, Quid loqueris cum ea?

Καὶ ἐπὶ τούτῳ ἦλθαν οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐθαύμαζον ὅτι μετὰ γυναικὸς ἐλάλει: οὐδεὶς μέντοι εἶπεν: τί ζητεῖς ἤ τί λαλεῖς μετ' αὐτῆς;

The woman therefore left her waterpot and went her way into the city and saith to the men there:

Reliquit ergo hydriam suam mulier, et abiit in civitatem, et dicit illis hominibus:

ἀφῆκεν οὖν τὴν ὑδρίαν αὐτῆς ἡ γυνὴ καὶ ἀπῆλθεν εἰς τὴν πόλιν, καὶ λέγει τοῖς ἀνθρώποις:

Come, and see a man who has told me all things whatsoever I have done. Is not he the Christ?

Venite, et videte hominem qui dixit mihi omnia quæcumque feci : numquid ipse est Christus?

δεῦτε ἴδετε ἄνθρωπον ὃς εἶπέν μοι πάντα ἃ ἐποίησα: μήτι οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ Χριστός;

They went therefore out of the city and came unto him.

Exierunt ergo de civitate et veniebant ad eum.

ἐξῆλθον ἐκ τῆς πόλεως, καὶ ἤρχοντο πρὸς αὐτόν.

In the mean time, the disciples prayed him, saying: Rabbi, eat.

Interea rogabant eum discipuli, dicentes : Rabbi, manduca.

Ἐν τῷ μεταξὺ ἠρώτων αὐτὸν οἱ μαθηταὶ λέγοντες: ῥαββί, φάγε.

But he said to them: I have meat to eat which you know not.

Ille autem dicit eis : Ego cibum habeo manducare, quem vos nescitis.

ὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς: ἐγὼ βρῶσιν ἔχω φαγεῖν ἣν ὑμεῖς οὐκ οἴδατε.

The disciples therefore said one to another: Hath any man brought him to eat?

Dicebant ergo discipuli ad invicem : Numquid aliquis attulit ei manducare?

ἔλεγον οὖν οἱ μαθηταὶ πρὸς ἀλλήλους, μή τις ἤνεγκεν αὐτῷ φαγεῖν;

Jesus saith to them: My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, that I may perfect his work.

Dicit eis Jesus : Meus cibus est ut faciam voluntatem ejus qui misit me, ut perficiam opus ejus.

λέγει αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς: ἐμὸν βρῶμά ἐστιν ἵνα ποιήσω τὸ θέλημα τοῦ πέμψαντός με καὶ τελειώσω αὐτοῦ τὸ ἔργον.

Do not you say: There are yet four months, and then the harvest cometh? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes, and see the countries. For they are white already to harvest.

Nonne vos dicitis quod adhuc quatuor menses sunt, et messis venit? Ecce dico vobis : levate oculos vestros, et videte regiones, quia albæ sunt jam ad messem.

οὐχ ὑμεῖς λέγετε ὅτι ἔτι τετράμηνός ἐστιν καὶ ὁ θερισμὸς ἔρχεται; ἰδοὺ λέγω ὑμῖν, ἐπάρατε τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς ὑμῶν καὶ θεάσασθε τὰς χώρας, ὅτι λευκαί εἰσιν πρὸς θερισμόν. ἤδη

And he that reapeth receiveth wages and gathereth fruit unto life everlasting: that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together.

Et qui metit, mercedem accipit, et congregat fructum in vitam æternam : ut et qui seminat, simul gaudeat, et qui metit.

ὁ θερίζων μισθὸν λαμβάνει καὶ συνάγει καρπὸν εἰς ζωὴν αἰώνιον, ἵνα ὁ σπείρων ὁμοῦ χαίρῃ καὶ ὁ θερίζων.

For in this is the saying true: That it is one man that soweth, and it is another that reapeth.

In hoc enim est verbum verum : quia alius est qui seminat, et alius est qui metit.

ἐν γὰρ τούτῳ ὁ λόγος ἐστὶν ἀληθινὸς, ὅτι ἄλλος ἐστὶν ὁ σπείρων καὶ ἄλλος ὁ θερίζων.

I have sent you to reap that in which you did not labour. Others have laboured: and you have entered into their labours.

Ego misi vos metere quod vos non laborastis : alii laboraverunt, et vos in labores eorum introistis.

ἐγὼ ἀπέστειλα ὑμᾶς θερίζειν ὃ οὐχ ὑμεῖς κεκοπιάκατε: ἄλλοι κεκοπιάκασιν, καὶ ὑμεῖς εἰς τὸν κόπον αὐτῶν εἰσεληλύθατε.

Now of that city many of the Samaritans believed in him, for the word of the woman giving testimony: He told me all things whatsoever I have done.

Ex civitate autem illa multi crediderunt in eum Samaritanorum, propter verbum mulieris testimonium perhibentis : Quia dixit mihi omnia quæcumque feci.

Ἐκ δὲ τῆς πόλεως ἐκείνης πολλοὶ ἐπίστευσαν εἰς αὐτὸν τῶν Σαμαριτῶν διὰ τὸν λόγον τῆς γυναικὸς μαρτυρούσης ὅτι εἶπέν μοι πάντα ἃ ἐποίησα.

So when the Samaritans were come to him, they desired that he would tarry there. And he abode there two days.

Cum venissent ergo ad illum Samaritani, rogaverunt eum ut ibi maneret. Et mansit ibi duos dies.

ὡς οὖν ἦλθον πρὸς αὐτὸν οἱ Σαμαρῖται, ἠρώτων αὐτὸν μεῖναι παρ' αὐτοῖς: καὶ ἔμεινεν ἐκεῖ δύο ἡμέρας.

And many more believed in him, because of his own word.

Et multo plures crediderunt in eum propter sermonem ejus.

καὶ πολλῷ πλείους ἐπίστευσαν διὰ τὸν λόγον αὐτοῦ,

And they said to the woman: We now believe, not for thy saying: for we ourselves have heard him and know that this is indeed the Saviour of the world.

Et mulieri dicebant : Quia jam non propter tuam loquelam credimus : ipsi enim audivimus, et scimus quia hic est vere Salvator mundi.

τῇ τε γυναικὶ ἔλεγον [ὅτι] οὐκέτι διὰ τὴν σὴν λαλιὰν πιστεύομεν: αὐτοὶ γὰρ ἀκηκόαμεν, καὶ οἴδαμεν ὅτι οὗτός ἐστιν ἀληθῶς ὁ σωτὴρ τοῦ κόσμου.

Now after two days, he departed thence and went into Galilee.

Post duos autem dies exiit inde, et abiit in Galilæam.

Μετὰ δὲ τὰς δύο ἡμέρας ἐξῆλθεν ἐκεῖθεν εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν:

For Jesus himself gave testimony that a prophet hath no honour in his own country.

Ipse enim Jesus testimonium perhibuit, quia propheta in sua patria honorem non habet.

αὐτὸς γὰρ Ἰησοῦς ἐμαρτύρησεν ὅτι προφήτης ἐν τῇ ἰδίᾳ πατρίδι τιμὴν οὐκ ἔχει.

And when he was come into Galilee, the Galileans received him, having seen all the things he had done at Jerusalem on the festival day: for they also went to the festival day.

Cum ergo venisset in Galilæam, exceperunt eum Galilæi, cum omnia vidissent quæ fecerat Jerosolymis in die festo : et ipsi enim venerant ad diem festum.

ὅτε οὖν ἦλθεν εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν, ἐδέξαντο αὐτὸν οἱ Γαλιλαῖοι, πάντα ἑωρακότες ὅσα ἐποίησεν ἐν Ἱεροσολύμοις ἐν τῇ ἑορτῇ: καὶ αὐτοὶ γὰρ ἦλθον εἰς τὴν ἑορτήν.

He came again therefore into Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain ruler, whose son was sick at Capharnaum.

Venit ergo iterum in Cana Galilææ, ubi fecit aquam vinum. Et erat quidam regulus, cujus filius infirmabatur Capharnaum.

ἦλθεν οὖν πάλιν εἰς τὴν Κανὰ τῆς Γαλιλαίας, ὅπου ἐποίησεν τὸ ὕδωρ οἶνον. καὶ Ἦν τις βασιλικὸς, οὗ ὁ υἱὸς ἠσθένει, ἐν Καφαρναούμ:

He having heard that Jesus was come from Judea into Galilee, sent to him and prayed him to come down and heal his son: for he was at the point of death.

Hic cum audisset quia Jesus adveniret a Judæa in Galilæam, abiit ad eum, et rogabat eum ut descenderet, et sanaret filium ejus : incipiebat enim mori.

οὗτος ἀκούσας ὅτι Ἰησοῦς ἥκει ἐκ τῆς Ἰουδαίας εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν, ἀπῆλθεν πρὸς αὐτὸν, καὶ ἠρώτα ἵνα καταβῇ καὶ ἰάσηται αὐτοῦ τὸν υἱόν: ἤμελλεν γὰρ ἀποθνῄσκειν.

Jesus therefore said to him: Unless you see signs and wonders, you believe not.

Dixit ergo Jesus ad eum : Nisi signa et prodigia videritis, non creditis.

εἶπεν οὖν ὁ Ἰησοῦς πρὸς αὐτόν: ἐὰν μὴ σημεῖα καὶ τέρατα ἴδητε, οὐ μὴ πιστεύσητε.

The ruler saith to him: Lord, come down before that my son die.

Dicit ad eum regulus : Domine, descende priusquam moriatur filius meus.

λέγει πρὸς αὐτὸν ὁ βασιλικός: κύριε, κατάβηθι πρὶν ἀποθανεῖν τὸ παιδίον μου.

Jesus saith to him: Go thy way. Thy son liveth. The man believed the word which Jesus said to him and went his way.

Dicit ei Jesus : Vade, filius tuus vivit. Credidit homo sermoni quem dixit ei Jesus, et ibat.

λέγει αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς: πορεύου: ὁ υἱός σου ζῇ. ἐπίστευσεν ὁ ἄνθρωπος τῷ λόγῳ ὃν εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς καὶ ἐπορεύετο.

And as he was going down, his servants met him: and they brought word, saying, that his son lived.

Jam autem eo descendente, servi occurrerunt ei, et nuntiaverunt dicentes, quia filius ejus viveret.

ἤδη δὲ αὐτοῦ καταβαίνοντος οἱ δοῦλοι αὐτοῦ ὑπήντησαν αὐτῷ λέγοντες ὅτι ὁ παῖς αὐτοῦ ζῇ.

He asked therefore of them the hour wherein he grew better. And they said to him: Yesterday at the seventh hour, the fever left him.

Interrogabat ergo horam ab eis in qua melius habuerit. Et dixerunt ei : Quia heri hora septima reliquit eum febris.

ἐπύθετο οὖν τὴν ὥραν παρ' αὐτῶν ἐν ᾗ κομψότερον ἔσχεν: εἶπαν οὖν αὐτῷ ὅτι ἐχθὲς ὥραν ἑβδόμην ἀφῆκεν αὐτὸν ὁ πυρετός.

The father therefore knew that it was at the same hour that Jesus said to him: Thy son liveth. And himself believed, and his whole house.

Cognovit ergo pater, quia illa hora erat in qua dixit ei Jesus : Filius tuus vivit; et credidit ipse et domus ejus tota.

ἔγνω οὖν ὁ πατὴρ ὅτι ἐκείνῃ τῇ ὥρᾳ ἐν ᾗ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς: ὁ υἱός σου ζῇ: καὶ ἐπίστευσεν αὐτὸς καὶ ἡ οἰκία αὐτοῦ ὅλη.

This is again the second miracle that Jesus did, when he was come out of Judea into Galilee.

Hoc iterum secundum signum fecit Jesus, cum venisset a Judæa in Galilæam.

Τοῦτο δὲ πάλιν δεύτερον σημεῖον ἐποίησεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἐλθὼν ἐκ τῆς Ἰουδαίας εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν.
