Genesis 26

And when a famine came in the land, after that barrenness which had happened in the days of Abraham, Isaac went to Abimelech, king of the Palestines, to Gerara.

Orta autem fame super terram post eam sterilitatem, quæ acciderat in diebus Abraham, abiit Isaac ad Abimelech regem Palæstinorum in Gerara.

ἐγένετο δὲ λιμὸς ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς χωρὶς τοῦ λιμοῦ τοῦ πρότερον ὃς ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ χρόνῳ τῷ Αβρααμ ἐπορεύθη δὲ Ισαακ πρὸς Αβιμελεχ βασιλέα Φυλιστιιμ εἰς Γεραρα

And the Lord appeared to him, and said: Go not down into Egypt, but stay in the land that I shall tell thee.

Apparuitque ei Dominus, et ait : Ne descendas in Ægyptum, sed quiesce in terra quam dixero tibi,

ὤφθη δὲ αὐτῷ κύριος καὶ εἶπεν μὴ καταβῇς εἰς Αἴγυπτον κατοίκησον δὲ ἐν τῇ γῇ ᾗ ἄν σοι εἴπω

And sojourn in it, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee: for to thee and to thy seed I will give all these countries, to fulfil the oath which I swore to Abraham thy father.

et peregrinare in ea : eroque tecum, et benedicam tibi : tibi enim et semini tuo dabo universas regiones has, complens juramentum quod spopondi Abraham patri tuo.

καὶ παροίκει ἐν τῇ γῇ ταύτῃ καὶ ἔσομαι μετὰ σοῦ καὶ εὐλογήσω σε σοὶ γὰρ καὶ τῷ σπέρματί σου δώσω πᾶσαν τὴν γῆν ταύτην καὶ στήσω τὸν ὅρκον μου ὃν ὤμοσα Αβρααμ τῷ πατρί σου

And I will multiply thy seed like the stars of heaven: and I will give to thy posterity all these countries: and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed.

Et multiplicabo semen tuum sicut stellas cæli : daboque posteris tuis universas regiones has : et benedicentur in semine tuo omnes gentes terræ,

καὶ πληθυνῶ τὸ σπέρμα σου ὡς τοὺς ἀστέρας τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καὶ δώσω τῷ σπέρματί σου πᾶσαν τὴν γῆν ταύτην καὶ ἐνευλογηθήσονται ἐν τῷ σπέρματί σου πάντα τὰ ἔθνη τῆς γῆς

Because Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my precepts and commandments, and observed my ceremonies and laws.

eo quod obedierit Abraham voci meæ, et custodierit præcepta et mandata mea, et cæremonias legesque servaverit.

ἀνθ' ὧν ὑπήκουσεν Αβρααμ ὁ πατήρ σου τῆς ἐμῆς φωνῆς καὶ ἐφύλαξεν τὰ προστάγματά μου καὶ τὰς ἐντολάς μου καὶ τὰ δικαιώματά μου καὶ τὰ νόμιμά μου

So Isaac abode in Gerara.

Mansit itaque Isaac in Geraris.

καὶ κατῴκησεν Ισαακ ἐν Γεραροις

And when he was asked by the men of that place, concerning his wife, he answered: She is my sister: for he was afraid to confess that she was his wife, thinking lest perhaps they would kill him because of her beauty.

Qui cum interrogaretur a viris loci illius super uxore sua, respondit : Soror mea est : timuerat enim confiteri quod sibi esset sociata conjugio, reputans ne forte interficerent eum propter illius pulchritudinem.

ἐπηρώτησαν δὲ οἱ ἄνδρες τοῦ τόπου περὶ Ρεβεκκας τῆς γυναικὸς αὐτοῦ καὶ εἶπεν ἀδελφή μού ἐστιν ἐφοβήθη γὰρ εἰπεῖν ὅτι γυνή μού ἐστιν μήποτε ἀποκτείνωσιν αὐτὸν οἱ ἄνδρες τοῦ τόπου περὶ Ρεβεκκας ὅτι ὡραία τῇ ὄψει ἦν

And when very many days were passed, and he abode there, Abimelech, king of the Palestines, looking out through a window, saw him playing with Rebecca, his wife.

Cumque pertransissent dies plurimi, et ibidem moraretur, prospiciens Abimelech rex Palæstinorum per fenestram, vidit eum jocantem cum Rebecca uxore sua.

ἐγένετο δὲ πολυχρόνιος ἐκεῖ παρακύψας δὲ Αβιμελεχ ὁ βασιλεὺς Γεραρων διὰ τῆς θυρίδος εἶδεν τὸν Ισαακ παίζοντα μετὰ Ρεβεκκας τῆς γυναικὸς αὐτοῦ

And calling for him, he said: It is evident she is thy wife: why didst thou feign her to be thy sister? He answered: I feared lest I should die for her sake.

Et accersito eo, ait : Perspicuum est quod uxor tua sit : cur mentitus es eam sororem tuam esse? Respondit : Timui ne morerer propter eam.

ἐκάλεσεν δὲ Αβιμελεχ τὸν Ισαακ καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ἄρα γε γυνή σού ἐστιν τί ὅτι εἶπας ἀδελφή μού ἐστιν εἶπεν δὲ αὐτῷ Ισαακ εἶπα γάρ μήποτε ἀποθάνω δι' αὐτήν

And Abimelech said: Why hast thou deceived us? Some man of the people might have lain with thy wife, and thou hadst brought upon us a great sin. And he commanded all the people, saying:

Dixitque Abimelech : Quare imposuisti nobis? potuit coire quispiam de populo cum uxore tua, et induxeras super nos grande peccatum. Præcepitque omni populo, dicens:

εἶπεν δὲ αὐτῷ Αβιμελεχ τί τοῦτο ἐποίησας ἡμῖν μικροῦ ἐκοιμήθη τις τοῦ γένους μου μετὰ τῆς γυναικός σου καὶ ἐπήγαγες ἐφ' ἡμᾶς ἄγνοιαν

He that shall touch this man’s wife, shall surely be put to death.

Qui tetigerit hominis hujus uxorem, morte morietur.

συνέταξεν δὲ Αβιμελεχ παντὶ τῷ λαῷ αὐτοῦ λέγων πᾶς ὁ ἁπτόμενος τοῦ ἀνθρώπου τούτου ἢ τῆς γυναικὸς αὐτοῦ θανάτου ἔνοχος ἔσται

And Isaac sowed in that land, and he found that same year a hundredfold: and the Lord blessed him.

Sevit autem Isaac in terra illa, et invenit in ipso anno centuplum : benedixitque ei Dominus.

ἔσπειρεν δὲ Ισαακ ἐν τῇ γῇ ἐκείνῃ καὶ εὗρεν ἐν τῷ ἐνιαυτῷ ἐκείνῳ ἑκατοστεύουσαν κριθήν εὐλόγησεν δὲ αὐτὸν κύριος

And the man was enriched, and he went on prospering and increasing, till he became exceeding great.

Et locupletatus est homo, et ibat proficiens atque succrescens, donec magnus vehementer effectus est:

καὶ ὑψώθη ὁ ἄνθρωπος καὶ προβαίνων μείζων ἐγίνετο ἕως οὗ μέγας ἐγένετο σφόδρα

And he had possessions of sheep and of herds, and a very great family. Wherefore the Palestines envying him,

habuit quoque possessiones ovium et armentorum, et familiæ plurimum. Ob hoc invidentes ei Palæstini,

ἐγένετο δὲ αὐτῷ κτήνη προβάτων καὶ κτήνη βοῶν καὶ γεώργια πολλά ἐζήλωσαν δὲ αὐτὸν οἱ Φυλιστιιμ

Stopped up at that time all the wells, that the servants of his father, Abraham, had digged, filling them up with earth:

omnes puteos, quos foderant servi patris illius Abraham, illo tempore obstruxerunt, implentes humo:

καὶ πάντα τὰ φρέατα ἃ ὤρυξαν οἱ παῖδες τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ ἐν τῷ χρόνῳ τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ ἐνέφραξαν αὐτὰ οἱ Φυλιστιιμ καὶ ἔπλησαν αὐτὰ γῆς

Insomuch that Abimelech himself said to Isaac: Depart from us, for thou art become much mightier than we.

in tantum, ut ipse Abimelech diceret ad Isaac : Recede a nobis, quoniam potentior nobis factus es valde.

εἶπεν δὲ Αβιμελεχ πρὸς Ισαακ ἄπελθε ἀφ' ἡμῶν ὅτι δυνατώτερος ἡμῶν ἐγένου σφόδρα

So he departed, and came to the torrent of Gerara, to dwell there:

Et ille discedens, ut veniret ad torrentem Geraræ, habitaretque ibi,

καὶ ἀπῆλθεν ἐκεῖθεν Ισαακ καὶ κατέλυσεν ἐν τῇ φάραγγι Γεραρων καὶ κατῴκησεν ἐκεῖ

And he digged again other wells, which the servants of his father, Abraham, had digged, and which, after his death, the Philistines had of old stopped up: and he called them by the same names, by which his father before had called them.

rursum fodit alios puteos, quos foderant servi patris sui Abraham, et quos, illo mortuo, olim obstruxerant Philisthiim : appellavitque eos eisdem nominibus quibus ante pater vocaverat.

καὶ πάλιν Ισαακ ὤρυξεν τὰ φρέατα τοῦ ὕδατος ἃ ὤρυξαν οἱ παῖδες Αβρααμ τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐνέφραξαν αὐτὰ οἱ Φυλιστιιμ μετὰ τὸ ἀποθανεῖν Αβρααμ τὸν πατέρα αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐπωνόμασεν αὐτοῖς ὀνόματα κατὰ τὰ ὀνόματα ἃ ἐπωνόμασεν Αβρααμ ὁ πατὴρ αὐτοῦ

And they digged in the torrent, and found living water:

Foderuntque in torrente, et repererunt aquam vivam.

καὶ ὤρυξαν οἱ παῖδες Ισαακ ἐν τῇ φάραγγι Γεραρων καὶ εὗρον ἐκεῖ φρέαρ ὕδατος ζῶντος

But there also the herdsmen of Gerara strove against the herdsmen of Isaac, saying: It is our water. Wherefore he called the name of the well, on occasion of that which had happened, Calumny.

Sed et ibi jurgium fuit pastorum Geraræ adversus pastores Isaac, dicentium : Nostra est aqua, quam ob rem nomen putei ex eo, quod acciderat, vocavit Calumniam.

καὶ ἐμαχέσαντο οἱ ποιμένες Γεραρων μετὰ τῶν ποιμένων Ισαακ φάσκοντες αὐτῶν εἶναι τὸ ὕδωρ καὶ ἐκάλεσεν τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ φρέατος Ἀδικία ἠδίκησαν γὰρ αὐτόν

And they digged also another; and for that they quarrelled likewise, and he called the name of it, Enmity.

Foderunt autem et alium : et pro illo quoque rixati sunt, appellavitque eum Inimicitias.

ἀπάρας δὲ Ισαακ ἐκεῖθεν ὤρυξεν φρέαρ ἕτερον ἐκρίνοντο δὲ καὶ περὶ ἐκείνου καὶ ἐπωνόμασεν τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Ἐχθρία

Going forward from thence, he digged another well, for which they contended not; therefore he called the name thereof, Latitude, saying: Now hath the Lord given us room, and made us to increase upon the earth.

Profectus inde fodit alium puteum, pro quo non contenderunt : itaque vocavit nomen ejus Latitudo, dicens : Nunc dilatavit nos Dominus, et fecit crescere super terram.

ἀπάρας δὲ ἐκεῖθεν ὤρυξεν φρέαρ ἕτερον καὶ οὐκ ἐμαχέσαντο περὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐπωνόμασεν τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Εὐρυχωρία λέγων διότι νῦν ἐπλάτυνεν κύριος ἡμῖν καὶ ηὔξησεν ἡμᾶς ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς

And he went up from that place to Bersabee,

Ascendit autem ex illo loco in Bersabee,

ἀνέβη δὲ ἐκεῖθεν ἐπὶ τὸ φρέαρ τοῦ ὅρκου

Where the Lord appeared to him that same night, saying: I am the God of Abraham thy father, do not fear, for I am with thee: I will bless thee, and multiply thy seed for my servant Abraham’s sake.

ubi apparuit ei Dominus in ipsa nocte, dicens : Ego sum Deus Abraham patris tui : noli timere, quia ego tecum sum : benedicam tibi, et multiplicabo semen tuum propter servum meum Abraham.

καὶ ὤφθη αὐτῷ κύριος ἐν τῇ νυκτὶ ἐκείνῃ καὶ εἶπεν ἐγώ εἰμι ὁ θεὸς Αβρααμ τοῦ πατρός σου μὴ φοβοῦ μετὰ σοῦ γάρ εἰμι καὶ ηὐλόγηκά σε καὶ πληθυνῶ τὸ σπέρμα σου διὰ Αβρααμ τὸν πατέρα σου

And he built there an altar: and called upon the name of the Lord, and pitched his tent; and commanded his servants to dig a well.

Itaque ædificavit ibi altare : et invocato nomine Domini, extendit tabernaculum, præcepitque servis suis ut foderent puteum.

καὶ ᾠκοδόμησεν ἐκεῖ θυσιαστήριον καὶ ἐπεκαλέσατο τὸ ὄνομα κυρίου καὶ ἔπηξεν ἐκεῖ τὴν σκηνὴν αὐτοῦ ὤρυξαν δὲ ἐκεῖ οἱ παῖδες Ισαακ φρέαρ

To which place when Abimelech, and Ochozath his friend, and Phicol chief captain of his soldiers, came from Gerara,

Ad quem locum cum venissent de Geraris Abimelech, et Ochozath amicus illius, et Phicol dux militum,

καὶ Αβιμελεχ ἐπορεύθη πρὸς αὐτὸν ἀπὸ Γεραρων καὶ Οχοζαθ ὁ νυμφαγωγὸς αὐτοῦ καὶ Φικολ ὁ ἀρχιστράτηγος τῆς δυνάμεως αὐτοῦ

Isaac said to them: Why are ye come to me, a man whom you hate, and have thrust out from you?

locutus est eis Isaac : Quid venistis ad me, hominem quem odistis, et expulistis a vobis?

καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ισαακ ἵνα τί ἤλθατε πρός με ὑμεῖς δὲ ἐμισήσατέ με καὶ ἀπεστείλατέ με ἀφ' ὑμῶν

And they answered: We saw that the Lord is with thee, and therefore we said: Let there be an oath between us, and let us make a covenant,

Qui responderunt : Vidimus tecum esse Dominum, et idcirco nos diximus : Sit juramentum inter nos, et ineamus fœdus,

καὶ εἶπαν ἰδόντες ἑωράκαμεν ὅτι ἦν κύριος μετὰ σοῦ καὶ εἴπαμεν γενέσθω ἀρὰ ἀνὰ μέσον ἡμῶν καὶ ἀνὰ μέσον σοῦ καὶ διαθησόμεθα μετὰ σοῦ διαθήκην

That thou do us no harm, as we on our part have touched nothing of thine, nor have done any thing to hurt thee; but with peace have sent thee away, increased with the blessing of the Lord.

ut non facias nobis quidquam mali, sicut et nos nihil tuorum attigimus, nec fecimus quod te læderet : sed cum pace dimisimus auctum benedictione Domini.

μὴ ποιήσειν μεθ' ἡμῶν κακόν καθότι ἡμεῖς σε οὐκ ἐβδελυξάμεθα καὶ ὃν τρόπον ἐχρησάμεθά σοι καλῶς καὶ ἐξαπεστείλαμέν σε μετ' εἰρήνης καὶ νῦν σὺ εὐλογητὸς ὑπὸ κυρίου

And he made them a feast, and after they had eaten and drunk:

Fecit ergo eis convivium, et post cibum et potum

καὶ ἐποίησεν αὐτοῖς δοχήν καὶ ἔφαγον καὶ ἔπιον

Arising in the morning, they swore one to another: and Isaac sent them away peaceably to their own home.

surgentes mane, juraverunt sibi mutuo : dimisitque eos Isaac pacifice in locum suum.

καὶ ἀναστάντες τὸ πρωὶ ὤμοσαν ἄνθρωπος τῷ πλησίον αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐξαπέστειλεν αὐτοὺς Ισαακ καὶ ἀπῴχοντο ἀπ' αὐτοῦ μετὰ σωτηρίας

And behold, the same day the servants of Isaac came, telling him of a well which they had digged, and saying: We have found water.

Ecce autem venerunt in ipso die servi Isaac annuntiantes ei de puteo, quem foderant, atque dicentes : Invenimus aquam.

ἐγένετο δὲ ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ καὶ παραγενόμενοι οἱ παῖδες Ισαακ ἀπήγγειλαν αὐτῷ περὶ τοῦ φρέατος οὗ ὤρυξαν καὶ εἶπαν οὐχ εὕρομεν ὕδωρ

Whereupon he called it Abundance: and the name of the city was called Bersabee, even to this day.

Unde appellavit eum Abundantiam : et nomen urbi impositum est Bersabee, usque in præsentem diem.

καὶ ἐκάλεσεν αὐτὸ Ὅρκος διὰ τοῦτο ὄνομα τῇ πόλει Φρέαρ ὅρκου ἕως τῆς σήμερον ἡμέρας

And Esau being forty years old, married wives, Judith, the daughter of Beeri, the Hethite, and Basemath, the daughter of Elon, of the same place.

Esau vero quadragenarius duxit uxores, Judith filiam Beeri Hethæi, et Basemath filiam Elon ejusdem loci:

ἦν δὲ Ησαυ ἐτῶν τεσσαράκοντα καὶ ἔλαβεν γυναῖκα Ιουδιν τὴν θυγατέρα Βεηρ τοῦ Χετταίου καὶ τὴν Βασεμμαθ θυγατέρα Αιλων τοῦ Ευαίου

And they both offended the mind of Isaac and Rebecca.

quæ ambæ offenderant animum Isaac et Rebeccæ.

καὶ ἦσαν ἐρίζουσαι τῷ Ισαακ καὶ τῇ Ρεβεκκα
