2 Corinthians 2

But I determined this with myself, to come to you again in sorrow.

Statui autem hoc ipsum apud me, ne iterum in tristitia venirem ad vos.

Ἔκρινα γὰρ ἐμαυτῷ τοῦτο, τὸ μὴ πάλιν ἐν λύπῃ πρὸς ὑμᾶς ἐλθεῖν:

For if I make you sorrowful, who is he then that can make me glad, but the same who is made sorrowful by me?

Si enim ego contristo vos : et quis est, qui me lætificet, nisi qui contristatur ex me?

εἰ γὰρ ἐγὼ λυπῶ ὑμᾶς, καὶ τίς ὁ εὐφραίνων με εἰ μὴ ὁ λυπούμενος ἐξ ἐμοῦ;

And I wrote this same to you: that I may not, when I come, have sorrow upon sorrow from them of whom I ought to rejoice: having confidence in you all, that my joy is the joy of you all.

Et hoc ipsum scripsi vobis, ut non cum venero, tristitiam super tristitiam habeam, de quibus oportuerat me gaudere : confidens in omnibus vobis, quia meum gaudium, omnium vestrum est.

καὶ ἔγραψα τοῦτο αὐτὸ ἵνα μὴ ἐλθὼν λύπην σχῶ ἀφ' ὧν ἔδει με χαίρειν, πεποιθὼς ἐπὶ πάντας ὑμᾶς ὅτι ἡ ἐμὴ χαρὰ πάντων ὑμῶν ἐστιν.

For out of much affliction and anguish of heart, I wrote to you with many tears: not that you should be made sorrowful: but that you might know the charity I have more abundantly towards you.

Nam ex multa tribulatione et angustia cordis scripsi vobis per multas lacrimas : non ut contristemini, sed ut sciatis, quam caritatem habeam abundantius in vobis.

ἐκ γὰρ πολλῆς θλίψεως καὶ συνοχῆς καρδίας ἔγραψα ὑμῖν διὰ πολλῶν δακρύων, οὐχ ἵνα λυπηθῆτε ἀλλὰ τὴν ἀγάπην ἵνα γνῶτε ἣν ἔχω περισσοτέρως εἰς ὑμᾶς.

And if any one have caused grief, he hath not grieved me: but in part, that I may not burden you all.

Si quis autem contristavit, non me contristavit : sed ex parte, ut non onerem omnes vos.

Εἰ δέ τις λελύπηκεν, οὐκ ἐμὲ λελύπηκεν, ἀλλὰ ἀπὸ μέρους, ἵνα μὴ ἐπιβαρῶ, πάντας ὑμᾶς.

To him who is such a one, this rebuke is sufficient, which is given by many.

Sufficit illi, qui ejusmodi est, objurgatio hæc, quæ fit a pluribus:

ἱκανὸν τῷ τοιούτῳ ἡ ἐπιτιμία αὕτη ἡ ὑπὸ τῶν πλειόνων,

So that on the contrary, you should rather forgive him and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow.

ita ut e contrario magis donetis, et consolemini, ne forte abundantiori tristitia absorbeatur qui ejusmodi est.

ὥστε τοὐναντίον ὑμᾶς χαρίσασθαι καὶ παρακαλέσαι, μή

Wherefore, I beseech you that you would confirm your charity towards him.

Propter quod obsecro vos, ut confirmetis in illum caritatem.

διὸ παρακαλῶ ὑμᾶς κυρῶσαι εἰς αὐτὸν ἀγάπην:

For to this end also did I write, that I may know the experiment of you, whether you be obedient in all things.

Ideo enim et scripsi, ut cognoscam experimentum vestrum, an in omnibus obedientes sitis.

εἰς τοῦτο γὰρ καὶ ἔγραψα ἵνα γνῶ τὴν δοκιμὴν ὑμῶν, εἰ εἰς πάντα ὑπήκοοί ἐστε.

And to whom you have pardoned any thing, I also. For, what I have pardoned, if I have pardoned any thing, for your sakes have I done it in the person of Christ:

Cui autem aliquid donastis, et ego : nam et ego quod donavi, si quid donavi, propter vos in persona Christi,

ᾧ δέ τι χαρίζεσθε, κἀγώ: καὶ γὰρ ἐγὼ ὃ κεχάρισμαι, εἴ τι κεχάρισμαι, δι' ὑμᾶς ἐν προσώπῳ Χριστοῦ,

That we be not overreached by Satan. For we are not ignorant of his devices.

ut non circumveniamur a Satana : non enim ignoramus cogitationes ejus.

ἵνα μὴ πλεονεκτηθῶμεν ὑπὸ τοῦ Σατανᾶ: οὐ γὰρ αὐτοῦ τὰ νοήματα ἀγνοοῦμεν.

And when I was come to Troas for the gospel of Christ and a door was opened unto me in the Lord,

Cum venissem autem Troadem propter Evangelium Christi, et ostium mihi apertum esset in Domino,

Ἐλθὼν δὲ εἰς τὴν Τρῳάδα εἰς τὸ εὐαγγέλιον τοῦ Χριστοῦ, καὶ θύρας μοι ἀνεῳγμένης ἐν κυρίῳ,

I had no rest in my spirit, because I found not Titus my brother: but bidding them farewell, I went into Macedonia.

non habui requiem spiritui meo, eo quod non invenerim Titum fratrem meum, sed valefaciens eis, profectus sum in Macedoniam.

οὐκ ἔσχηκα ἄνεσιν τῷ πνεύματί μου τῷ μὴ εὑρεῖν με Τίτον τὸν ἀδελφόν μου, ἀλλὰ ἀποταξάμενος αὐτοῖς ἐξῆλθον εἰς Μακεδονίαν.

Now thanks be to God, who always maketh us to triumph in Christ Jesus and manifesteth the odour of his knowledge by us in every place.

Deo autem gratias, qui semper triumphat nos in Christo Jesu, et odorem notitiæ suæ manifestat per nos in omni loco:

Τῷ δὲ θεῷ χάρις τῷ πάντοτε θριαμβεύοντι ἡμᾶς ἐν τῷ Χριστῷ καὶ τὴν ὀσμὴν τῆς γνώσεως αὐτοῦ φανεροῦντι δι' ἡμῶν ἐν παντὶ τόπῳ:

For we are the good odour of Christ unto God, in them that are saved and in them that perish.

quia Christi bonus odor sumus Deo in iis qui salvi fiunt, et in iis qui pereunt:

ὅτι Χριστοῦ εὐωδία ἐσμὲν τῷ θεῷ ἐν τοῖς σῳζομένοις καὶ ἐν τοῖς ἀπολλυμένοις,

To the one indeed the odour of death unto death: but to the others the odour of life unto life. And for these things who is so sufficient?

aliis quidem odor mortis in mortem : aliis autem odor vitæ in vitam. Et ad hæc quis tam idoneus?

οἷς μὲν ὀσμὴ ἐκ θανάτου εἰς θάνατον, οἷς δὲ ὀσμὴ ἐκ ζωῆς εἰς ζωήν. καὶ πρὸς ταῦτα τίς ἱκανός;

For we are not as many, adulterating the word of God: but with sincerity: but as from God, before God, in Christ we speak.

non enim sumus sicut plurimi, adulterantes verbum Dei, sed ex sinceritate, sed sicut ex Deo, coram Deo, in Christo loquimur.

οὐ γάρ ἐσμεν ὡς οἱ πολλοὶ καπηλεύοντες τὸν λόγον τοῦ θεοῦ, ἀλλ' ὡς ἐξ εἰλικρινείας, ἀλλ' ὡς ἐκ θεοῦ κατέναντι θεοῦ ἐν Χριστῷ λαλοῦμεν.
