St. Titus Brandsma

Life and historical setting
Titus Brandsma was born Anno Sjoerd Brandsma in the Netherlands in 1881 and entered the Carmelite Order. He became a priest, scholar of Carmelite spirituality, professor, university rector, and adviser to Catholic journalists.
During the Nazi occupation, Brandsma defended the freedom of Catholic education and the press. He opposed the insertion of Nazi propaganda into Catholic newspapers and carried the bishops' instructions to editors across the Netherlands.
The Gestapo arrested him in 1942. After imprisonment and forced labor, he was sent to Dachau, where he was killed by lethal injection on July 26, 1942, after responding to brutality with prayer and charity.
Pope Francis canonized Titus Brandsma on May 15, 2022. His liturgical memorial is July 27, and his witness unites intellectual work, responsible journalism, Carmelite prayer, resistance to tyranny, and forgiveness of persecutors.
