Mary

Why Catholics Honor the Mother of Jesus

Why Mary Matters

Few Catholic teachings are more misunderstood than those concerning the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Catholics do not worship Mary. Worship belongs to God alone. Instead, Catholics honor Mary because God honored her first by choosing her to be the Mother of His Son.

Every authentic Marian doctrine ultimately points us to Jesus Christ.

Mary Is the Mother of God

Catholics call Mary the Mother of God because Jesus Christ is one Divine Person with two natures: fully God and fully man.

“And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?”

— Luke 1:43 (Douay-Rheims)

Elizabeth calls Mary the “Mother of my Lord,” and in Scripture “Lord” is a title for God.

The title protects the truth about Jesus, not merely Mary.

Why Do Catholics Honor Mary?

Scripture itself shows Mary being honored.

“For behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.”

— Luke 1:48 (Douay-Rheims)

Catholics fulfill this biblical prophecy whenever they honor Mary as the most blessed of all women.

Honoring Mary does not diminish Christ. It magnifies what God has done through her.

Do Catholics Worship Mary?

No.

Catholic theology distinguishes between worship and honor.

  • Latria — worship due to God alone.
  • Dulia — honor given to the saints.
  • Hyperdulia — special honor given to Mary.

Catholics adore God alone while honoring Mary as the greatest disciple of Christ.

Why Ask Mary to Pray for Us?

Catholics ask Mary for her prayers just as Christians ask one another to pray for them.

Death does not separate believers from Christ. Those in Heaven remain alive in Him.

“He is not the God of the dead, but of the living.”

— Mark 12:27 (Douay-Rheims)

Catholics believe Mary’s prayers are powerful because of her unique relationship with her Son.

The Wedding Feast at Cana

Mary’s intercession is beautifully illustrated at Cana.

When the wedding hosts ran out of wine, Mary brought the need to Jesus.

“His mother saith to him: They have no wine.”

— John 2:3 (Douay-Rheims)

Christ then performed His first public miracle.

Catholics see Cana as a biblical example of Mary’s intercessory role.

Common Objections

  • “Catholics worship Mary.”
  • “Mary was just an ordinary woman.”
  • “We should only pray directly to Jesus.”
  • “The Bible never teaches Marian devotion.”
  • “Mary had other children.”

These objections are addressed through Scripture, Church history, and the witness of the early Christians.
