Following Christ and Encouraging the Church

What Are Saints?

Saints are men and women who have faithfully followed Jesus Christ and now share in the glory of Heaven.

Through God’s grace, they completed their earthly journey and entered into eternal life.

While the Church formally recognizes certain saints, every Christian is called to become a saint.

“Be you therefore perfect, as also your heavenly Father is perfect.” — Matthew 5:48

Why Saints Matter

Saints remind us that holiness is possible.

They were ordinary people who responded to God’s grace in extraordinary ways.

Their lives provide examples of faith, courage, perseverance, humility, charity, and devotion to Christ.

By studying the saints, Christians learn practical ways to follow Jesus more faithfully.

Saints Point Us to Jesus

Everything the saints accomplished came through God’s grace.

Saints are not substitutes for Jesus Christ.

Rather, they reflect His work in human lives.

Authentic devotion to the saints always leads people closer to Christ.

The Church Triumphant

The saints in Heaven are often called the Church Triumphant.

They have completed their earthly race and now worship God face-to-face.

Scripture describes Heaven as a great multitude praising God before His throne.

The saints remain united to Christ and continue to rejoice in His victory.

Our Connection With the Saints

Death does not break the unity of Christ’s Body.

Christians on earth remain spiritually united with believers who have gone before us.

This spiritual union is known as the Communion of Saints.

Because of this bond, Catholics ask the saints to pray for them just as Christians ask one another for prayer.

Examples of Holiness

Saints came from every age, culture, and walk of life.

  • Some were martyrs.
  • Some were missionaries.
  • Some were scholars.
  • Some were parents.
  • Some were religious sisters and priests.
  • Some lived quiet lives of prayer and service.

Their diversity reminds us that holiness is possible in every vocation and circumstance.

Common Misunderstandings

Catholics Do Not Worship Saints

Worship belongs to God alone.

Catholics honor saints because of God’s work in their lives.

Saints Are Not Equal to God

Saints are human beings who were saved by God’s grace.

They are not divine and possess no power apart from God.

Saints Do Not Replace Jesus

Jesus Christ is the one Savior and Mediator.

The saints lead people to Him and never take His place.

Every Christian Is Called to Holiness

Saints are not a special category of Christians.

Every believer is called to become a saint through God’s grace.
