Make the case

Define the claim accurately, state the strongest fair objection, and use the evidence without shortcuts.

The Catholic position

Spiritual care respects truth, freedom, confidentiality, and the distinction between pastoral ministry and clinical treatment.

The argument

Separate first-person benefit from claims about mechanisms. The organization says the E-Meter itself does nothing and is not for diagnosis or treatment; broader claims about mental mass, engrams, and spiritual outcomes still require independent evidence.

The opposing position

Scientology presents auditing as a precise spiritual practice that helps a person locate and handle areas of spiritual distress, often with an E-Meter.

What would decide the issue?

Agree on definitions, read the full source in context, and identify what evidence could count against either interpretation. A claim protected from every possible test has not yet been demonstrated.

The evidence stack

Start with the canonical text, then compare Catholic doctrine, official organizational teaching, and history.

Questions people actually ask

Each answer carries direct source anchors.

What is auditing?

Scientology describes auditing as one-to-one spiritual counseling intended to locate and address spiritual distress, sometimes assisted by an E-Meter. Its specific theory and promised outcomes should be evaluated separately from whether a participant reports feeling heard.

Sources: Official Scientology auditing materials.

What does an E-Meter actually measure?

Official Scientology material describes a small electrical current and needle changes while the participant holds electrodes, and says the device itself does nothing and is not intended to diagnose, treat, or prevent disease. Interpretation of those changes is an additional claim.

Are engrams scientifically established as described in Dianetics?

Painful experiences can affect people, but that broad truth does not establish the specific Dianetics model of exact unconscious recordings, mental mass, or the claimed auditing mechanism. Empirical claims require independent, reproducible evidence.

Sacred Scripture

  • Douay-Rheims Bible: passages are identified at claim level throughout each guide.

Academic Scholarship

  • Read disputed verses in their whole chapter and canonical context.

Historical Secondary Source

  • Anthony A. Hoekema, The Four Major Cults (1963)—used as an older topic map, not as authority for current organizational teaching.
  • Scientology is researched separately; it is not covered by Hoekema’s book and must not be confused with Christian Science.

Reflect

A Catholic argument is strongest when the other person can recognize their real position in our description and still see clearly why we disagree.

Pray

Lord Jesus Christ, keep us faithful to truth, free from contempt, patient in listening, and courageous in witness. Draw every heart into the fullness of Your life. Amen.
