Make the case
Define the claim accurately, state the strongest fair objection, and use the evidence without shortcuts.
The Catholic position
God is infinite spirit, intelligence, and truth, yet also the living personal Trinity who freely creates and loves beings truly distinct from Himself.
The argument
Affirm whatever is true in divine simplicity and spirituality, then ask whether the system preserves personal relation, free creation, and the revealed distinction of Father, Son, and Spirit.
The opposing position
Christian Science speaks of God through synonyms such as Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth, and Love.
What would decide the issue?
Agree on definitions, read the full source in context, and identify what evidence could count against either interpretation. A claim protected from every possible test has not yet been demonstrated.
The evidence stack
Start with the canonical text, then compare Catholic doctrine, official organizational teaching, and history.
Sacred Scripture
Exodus 3:14; Matthew 28:19; John 4:24; 1 John 4:8–10 — Douay-Rheims
Catholic doctrine
CCC 198–267
Official position
Read the movement’s current official material directly before relying on a critic’s summary.
Historical test
Use dated primary documents, manuscript evidence, and contemporaneous witnesses where the claim is historical.
Use it in a real conversation
One claim. One distinction. One strong anchor.
“What does your church officially mean by that term, and where is its clearest source?”
State the Catholic claim in one sentence before comparing proof texts.

Questions people actually ask
Each answer carries direct source anchors.
Is Christian Science the same as Scientology?
No. Christian Science was founded by Mary Baker Eddy and centers on her metaphysical reading of Christianity and spiritual healing. Scientology was founded by L. Ron Hubbard and centers on the thetan, auditing, engrams, and a graded path of spiritual ability.

Is God merely an impersonal Principle or Mind?
God is infinite truth, wisdom, life, and love, but biblical revelation is irreducibly personal: God knows, wills, creates freely, covenants, speaks, loves, and reveals Himself as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Sources: Exodus 3:14–15; John 17; 1 John 4:8–10; CCC 198–267.
Are God and creation one reality?
No. Every creature depends continuously on God, who is intimately present as cause, yet God infinitely transcends the world. Creator and creation are neither rivals nor one substance.
Sources: Genesis 1; Acts 17:24–28 — Douay-Rheims; CCC 279–324.
Why does the Trinity matter here?
The Trinity means ultimate reality is the living communion of Father, Son, and Spirit, not a collection of impersonal synonyms. Creation and redemption are free personal acts of the one triune God.
Sources: Matthew 28:19; John 14–17 — Douay-Rheims; CCC 232–267.

Sacred Scripture
- Douay-Rheims Bible: passages are identified at claim level throughout each guide.
Academic Scholarship
- Read disputed verses in their whole chapter and canonical context.
Historical Secondary Source
- Anthony A. Hoekema, The Four Major Cults (1963)—used as an older topic map, not as authority for current organizational teaching.
- Scientology is researched separately; it is not covered by Hoekema’s book and must not be confused with Christian Science.

Reflect
A Catholic argument is strongest when the other person can recognize their real position in our description and still see clearly why we disagree.
Pray
Lord Jesus Christ, keep us faithful to truth, free from contempt, patient in listening, and courageous in witness. Draw every heart into the fullness of Your life. Amen.
