Make the case

Define the claim accurately, state the strongest fair objection, and use the evidence without shortcuts.

The Catholic position

Grace truly makes us adopted children and partakers of the divine nature, yet the creature never becomes another God by essence.

The argument

Affirm the biblical call to holiness and participation in divine life, then preserve the Creator-creature distinction. Marriage is a holy sacrament and family communion has eternal significance, but Christ says earthly marriage as such does not continue in the resurrection.

The opposing position

LDS teaching links the fulness of exaltation with covenants, ordinances, and eternal family sealing.

What would decide the issue?

Agree on definitions, read the full source in context, and identify what evidence could count against either interpretation. A claim protected from every possible test has not yet been demonstrated.

The evidence stack

Start with the canonical text, then compare Catholic doctrine, official organizational teaching, and history.

Questions people actually ask

Each answer carries direct source anchors.

What is the Catholic meaning of divinization?

God adopts and sanctifies us by grace so that we participate in His life. We remain creatures entirely dependent on the one uncreated Trinity; no redeemed person becomes a new god by nature.

Sources: John 1:12–13; 2 Peter 1:4 — Douay-Rheims; CCC 460, 1996–2000.

Are families eternal?

Love and communion in Christ are not erased by death, and the communion of saints includes the redeemed family of God. Yet Jesus teaches that resurrected life is not a continuation of earthly marriage as an exclusive marital bond.

Sources: Matthew 22:23–33; Ephesians 3:14–15 — Douay-Rheims; CCC 1023–1029.

Is temple marriage required for the highest salvation?

Catholicism honors marriage as a sacrament, but salvation is the gift of Christ and consecrated celibacy is also a holy vocation. No secret or restricted marriage rite completes a deficient baptismal gospel.

Sources: Matthew 19:10–12; 1 Corinthians 7; Ephesians 2:8–10 — Douay-Rheims.

Sacred Scripture

  • Douay-Rheims Bible: passages are identified at claim level throughout each guide.

Academic Scholarship

  • Read disputed verses in their whole chapter and canonical context.

Historical Secondary Source

  • Anthony A. Hoekema, The Four Major Cults (1963)—used as an older topic map, not as authority for current organizational teaching.
  • Scientology is researched separately; it is not covered by Hoekema’s book and must not be confused with Christian Science.

Reflect

A Catholic argument is strongest when the other person can recognize their real position in our description and still see clearly why we disagree.

Pray

Lord Jesus Christ, keep us faithful to truth, free from contempt, patient in listening, and courageous in witness. Draw every heart into the fullness of Your life. Amen.
