Philemon 1

Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus, and Timothy, a brother: to Philemon, our beloved and fellow labourer,

Paulus vinctus Christi Jesu, et Timotheus frater, Philemoni dilecto, et adjutori nostro,

Παῦλος δέσμιος Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ καὶ Τιμόθεος ὁ ἀδελφὸς Φιλήμονι τῷ ἀγαπητῷ καὶ συνεργῷ ἡμῶν

And to Appia, our dearest sister, and to Archippus, our fellow soldier, and to the church which is in thy house.

et Appiæ sorori carissimæ, et Archippo commilitoni nostro, et ecclesiæ, quæ in domo tua est.

καὶ Ἀπφίᾳ τῇ ἀδελφῇ καὶ Ἀρχίππῳ τῷ συστρατιώτῃ ἡμῶν καὶ τῇ κατ' οἶκόν σου ἐκκλησίᾳ:

Grace to you and peace, from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

Gratia vobis, et pax a Deo Patre nostro, et Domino Jesu Christo.

χάρις ὑμῖν καὶ εἰρήνη ἀπὸ θεοῦ πατρὸς ἡμῶν καὶ κυρίου Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ.

I give thanks to my God, always making a remembrance of thee in my prayers.

Gratias ago Deo meo, semper memoriam tui faciens in orationibus meis,

Εὐχαριστῶ τῷ θεῷ μου πάντοτε μνείαν σου ποιούμενος ἐπὶ τῶν προσευχῶν μου,

Hearing of thy charity and faith, which thou hast in the Lord Jesus and towards all the saints:

audiens caritatem tuam, et fidem, quam habes in Domino Jesu, et in omnes sanctos:

ἀκούων σου τὴν ἀγάπην καὶ τὴν πίστιν ἣν ἔχεις εἰς τὸν κύριον Ἰησοῦν καὶ εἰς πάντας τοὺς ἁγίους,

That the communication of thy faith may be made evident in the acknowledgment of every good work that is in you in Christ Jesus.

ut communicatio fidei tuæ evidens fiat in agnitione omnis operis boni, quod est in vobis in Christo Jesu.

ὅπως ἡ κοινωνία τῆς πίστεώς σου ἐνεργὴς γένηται ἐν ἐπιγνώσει παντὸς ἀγαθοῦ [τοῦ] ἐν ἡμῖν εἰς Χριστόν:

For I have had great joy and consolation in thy charity, because the bowels of the saints have been refreshed by thee, brother.

Gaudium enim magnum habui, et consolationem in caritate tua : quia viscera sanctorum requieverunt per te, frater.

χαρὰν γὰρ πολλὴν ἔσχον καὶ παράκλησιν ἐπὶ τῇ ἀγάπῃ σου, ὅτι τὰ σπλάγχνα τῶν ἁγίων ἀναπέπαυται διὰ σοῦ, ἀδελφέ.

Wherefore, though I have much confidence in Christ Jesus to command thee that which is to the purpose:

Propter quod multam fiduciam habens in Christo Jesu imperandi tibi quod ad rem pertinet:

διό, πολλὴν ἐν Χριστῷ παρρησίαν ἔχων ἐπιτάσσειν σοι τὸ ἀνῆκον,

For charity sake I rather beseech, whereas thou art such a one, as Paul, an old man and now a prisoner also of Jesus Christ.

propter caritatem magis obsecro, cum sis talis, ut Paulus senex, nunc autem et vinctus Jesu Christi:

διὰ τὴν ἀγάπην μᾶλλον παρακαλῶ, τοιοῦτος ὢν ὡς Παῦλος πρεσβύτης, νυνὶ δὲ καὶ δέσμιος Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ,

I beseech thee for my son, whom I have begotten in my bands, Onesimus,

obsecro te pro meo filio, quem genui in vinculis, Onesimo,

παρακαλῶ σε περὶ τοῦ ἐμοῦ τέκνου, ὃν ἐγέννησα ἐν τοῖς δεσμοῖς, Ὀνήσιμον,

Who hath been heretofore unprofitable to thee but now is profitable both to me and thee:

qui tibi aliquando inutilis fuit, nunc autem et mihi et tibi utilis,

τόν ποτέ σοι ἄχρηστον νυνὶ δὲ σοὶ καὶ ἐμοὶ εὔχρηστον,

Whom I have sent back to thee. And do thou receive him as my own bowels.

quem remisi tibi. Tu autem illum, ut mea viscera, suscipe:

ὃν ἀνέπεμψά σοι, αὐτόν, τοῦτ' ἔστιν τὰ ἐμὰ σπλάγχνα.

Whom I would have retained with me, that in thy stead he might have ministered to me in the bands of the gospel.

quem ego volueram mecum detinere, ut pro te mihi ministraret in vinculis Evangelii:

ὃν ἐγὼ ἐβουλόμην πρὸς ἐμαυτὸν κατέχειν, ἵνα ὑπὲρ σοῦ μοι διακονῇ ἐν τοῖς δεσμοῖς τοῦ εὐαγγελίου,

But without thy counsel I would do nothing: that thy good deed might not be as it were of necessity, but voluntary.

sine consilio autem tuo nihil volui facere, uti ne velut ex necessitate bonum tuum esset, sed voluntarium.

χωρὶς δὲ τῆς σῆς γνώμης οὐδὲν ἠθέλησα ποιῆσαι, ἵνα μὴ ὡς κατὰ ἀνάγκην τὸ ἀγαθόν σου ᾖ ἀλλὰ κατὰ ἑκούσιον.

For perhaps he therefore departed for a season from thee that thou mightest receive him again for ever:

Forsitan enim ideo discessit ad horam a te, ut æternum illum reciperes:

τάχα γὰρ διὰ τοῦτο ἐχωρίσθη πρὸς ὥραν ἵνα αἰώνιον αὐτὸν ἀπέχῃς,

Not now as a servant, but instead of a servant, a most dear brother, especially to me. But how much more to thee, both in the flesh and in the Lord?

jam non ut servum, sed pro servo carissimum fratrem, maxime mihi : quanto autem magis tibi et in carne, et in Domino?

οὐκέτι ὡς δοῦλον ἀλλ' ὑπὲρ δοῦλον, ἀδελφὸν ἀγαπητόν, μάλιστα ἐμοί, πόσῳ δὲ μᾶλλον σοὶ καὶ ἐν σαρκὶ καὶ ἐν κυρίῳ.

If therefore thou count me a partner, receive him as myself.

Si ergo habes me socium, suscipe illum sicut me:

εἰ οὖν με ἔχεις κοινωνόν, προσλαβοῦ αὐτὸν ὡς ἐμέ.

And if he hath wronged thee in any thing or is in thy debt, put that to my account.

si autem aliquid nocuit tibi, aut debet, hoc mihi imputa.

εἰ δέ τι ἠδίκησέν σε ἢ ὀφείλει, τοῦτο ἐμοὶ ἐλλόγα:

I Paul have written it with my own hand: I will repay it: not to say to thee that thou owest me thy own self also.

Ego Paulus scripsi mea manu : ego reddam, ut non dicam tibi, quod et teipsum mihi debes:

ἐγὼ Παῦλος ἔγραψα τῇ ἐμῇ χειρί, ἐγὼ ἀποτίσω: ἵνα μὴ λέγω σοι ὅτι καὶ σεαυτόν μοι προσοφείλεις.

Yea, brother. May I enjoy thee in the Lord! Refresh my bowels in the Lord.

ita, frater. Ego te fruar in Domino : refice viscera mea in Domino.

ναί, ἀδελφέ, ἐγώ σου ὀναίμην ἐν κυρίῳ: ἀνάπαυσόν μου τὰ σπλάγχνα ἐν Χριστῷ.

Trusting in thy obedience, I have written to thee: knowing that thou wilt also do more than I say.

Confidens in obedientia tua scripsi tibi : sciens quoniam et super id, quod dico, facies.

Πεποιθὼς τῇ ὑπακοῇ σου ἔγραψά σοι, εἰδὼς ὅτι καὶ ὑπὲρ ἃ λέγω ποιήσεις.

But withal prepare me also a lodging. For I hope that through your prayers I shall be given unto you.

Simul autem et para mihi hospitium : nam spero per orationes vestras donari me vobis.

ἅμα δὲ καὶ ἑτοίμαζέ μοι ξενίαν: ἐλπίζω γὰρ ὅτι διὰ τῶν προσευχῶν ὑμῶν χαρισθήσομαι ὑμῖν.

There salute thee Epaphras, my fellow prisoner in Christ Jesus:

Salutat te Epaphras concaptivus meus in Christo Jesu,

Ἀσπάζεταί σε Ἐπαφρᾶς ὁ συναιχμάλωτός μου ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ,

Mark, Aristarchus, Demas and Luke, my fellow labourers.

Marcus, Aristarchus, Demas, et Lucas, adjutores mei.

Μᾶρκος, Ἀρίσταρχος, Δημᾶς, Λουκᾶς, οἱ συνεργοί μου.

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.

Ἡ χάρις τοῦ κυρίου Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ μετὰ τοῦ πνεύματος ὑμῶν.
