Fallen Angels

The Reality of Evil and Christ’s Victory

Fallen Angels

Christians believe that God created all angels good.

Some angels freely chose to reject God and rebel against Him.

These angels are called fallen angels or demons.

The Church teaches that Satan and the demons are real spiritual beings, but they are creatures, not rivals equal to God.

“The devil sinneth from the beginning.” — 1 John 3:8

What Are Fallen Angels?

Fallen angels are angels who freely rejected God.

Like all angels, they were created good, intelligent, and free.

Their rebellion was not caused by God. It was the result of their own free choice.

Having definitively rejected God, they remain opposed to His will and seek to lead others away from Him.

The Rebellion Against God

Before the creation of humanity, some angels chose pride over obedience.

Rather than serving God, they sought to place themselves above Him.

Scripture alludes to this rebellion and its consequences.

The Church teaches that this decision was final because angels possess a spiritual knowledge and freedom unlike our own.

“God spared not the angels that sinned.” — 2 Peter 2:4

Who Is Satan?

Satan is the leader of the fallen angels.

The name Satan means “adversary” or “accuser.”

Scripture also refers to him as the devil, the tempter, the evil one, and the ancient serpent.

Satan seeks to oppose God’s plan and tempt human beings away from truth and holiness.

Yet Satan remains a creature. He is not equal to God and possesses only the power that God permits.

“Be sober and watch: because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, goeth about seeking whom he may devour.” — 1 Peter 5:8

Demons

Demons are fallen angels who followed Satan in his rebellion against God.

They oppose God’s will and seek to draw people into sin.

The Gospels frequently describe Jesus confronting and casting out demons, demonstrating His authority over them.

Catholics do not deny the reality of demons, but neither do we become preoccupied with them.

The focus of Christian life is always Jesus Christ.

Spiritual Warfare

Every Christian experiences a spiritual struggle.

This struggle involves temptation, sin, and the ongoing choice between following God and rejecting Him.

Spiritual warfare is not primarily about extraordinary events. It is most often lived through daily faithfulness, prayer, virtue, and trust in God.

“Put you on the armour of God, that you may be able to stand against the deceits of the devil.” — Ephesians 6:11

Christ’s Victory Over Satan

The central Christian message is not the power of Satan but the victory of Jesus Christ.

Through His life, death, and Resurrection, Jesus conquered sin, death, and the powers of evil.

Satan remains active in the world, but his ultimate defeat is certain.

Christians therefore live in hope and confidence rather than fear.

“Take courage, I have overcome the world.” — John 16:33

How Christians Respond

The Church encourages Christians to respond to evil by remaining close to Christ.

  • Pray regularly.
  • Receive the sacraments faithfully.
  • Read Sacred Scripture.
  • Resist temptation.
  • Practice virtue.
  • Trust in God’s grace.

Catholics may also seek the intercession of Saint Michael the Archangel and the saints, asking for their prayers and protection.

What Fallen Angels Cannot Do

It is important to avoid misunderstandings.

  • Demons are not equal to God.
  • They do not know everything.
  • They cannot force a person to sin.
  • They cannot separate us from God against our will.
  • Christ’s grace is greater than their power.

Catholics should avoid superstition, fear, occult practices, and unhealthy fascination with demonic activity.
