Archangels
Saint Michael, Saint Gabriel, and Saint Raphael
Archangels
Throughout Sacred Scripture, God sends angels to carry out important missions.
Among the heavenly spirits, the Bible specifically identifies three archangels by name: Saint Michael, Saint Gabriel, and Saint Raphael.
These archangels play important roles in God’s plan of salvation and continue to remind us of God’s power, protection, and guidance.
What Is an Archangel?
The word archangel means “chief messenger.”
Archangels are angels entrusted with particularly important missions in God’s plan.
While Scripture speaks of many angels, only three archangels are identified by name: Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael.
Catholics honor these archangels as faithful servants of God who carry out His will.
Saint Michael
Saint Michael is the great defender of God’s people and leader of the heavenly armies.
Scripture presents Michael as fighting against Satan and the fallen angels.
Catholics often ask Saint Michael’s intercession for protection against evil and spiritual dangers.
“And there was a great battle in heaven, Michael and his angels fought with the dragon.” — Apocalypse 12:7
Saint Gabriel
Saint Gabriel is God’s messenger of good news.
He appears in the Book of Daniel and plays a central role in the Gospel of Luke.
Gabriel announced the births of Saint John the Baptist and Jesus Christ.
His appearance to the Blessed Virgin Mary at the Annunciation marks one of the most important moments in salvation history.
“Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.” — Luke 1:28
Saint Raphael
Saint Raphael appears in the Book of Tobias.
His name means “God heals.”
Raphael guides Tobias on his journey, protects him from danger, and assists in the healing of his family.
Because of this, Saint Raphael is often associated with healing, travelers, and God’s providential care.
“For I am the angel Raphael, one of the seven, who stand before the Lord.” — Tobias 12:15
The Mission of the Archangels
The archangels reveal different aspects of God’s care for His people.
- Michael protects and defends.
- Gabriel announces God’s saving plan.
- Raphael guides and heals.
Their missions differ, but all serve the same purpose: helping accomplish God’s will and leading people closer to Him.
Archangels in Scripture
The archangels appear throughout Sacred Scripture.
- Michael appears in Daniel, Jude, and Revelation.
- Gabriel appears in Daniel and Luke.
- Raphael appears in the Book of Tobias.
These appearances remind us that God actively works through His heavenly servants in the history of salvation.
Can Catholics Pray to the Archangels?
Catholics may ask the archangels to pray for them and assist them according to God’s will.
This is not worship.
Worship belongs to God alone. Asking for the intercession of the archangels is similar to asking fellow Christians to pray for us.
One of the most beloved Catholic prayers is the Prayer to Saint Michael:
“Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle; be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.”
